Classic FM Synthesis on the Peak

- In this video I demonstrate using the Novation Peak for a more traditional FM sound. Along the way I talk about why many subtractive synths with FM features are quite different from classic FM and their limitations (and benefits) and, hopefully, illustrate that the Peak won't be replacing your DX7, but how it can reach some of the same territory. We illustrate this with a simple end to end sound design demo.

I had a feeling that the FM features of the Peak (and many subtractive synths that offer FM) get misunderstood (and mischaracterized) quite often: this was my attempt at showing what it can really do, and how it compares to a regular FM synth. @ChalkWalkMusic i like synthesizers a lot but my adhd obstructs me from grasping some concepts due to inability to focus. Your explanation made perfect sense. Saved up a summit a year ago, but my FM sounds were horribly inharmonic. Thx to you it actually starts to make sense. What a wonderful instrument. Please make more content ;) have a nice day man.

It's definitely my desert island synth (assuming I get a controller too)? As for spacecraft; I cannot comment, for reasons of galactic diplomacy.

question, can you modulate the amount of dept when you do fm?
Thanks for your comment, and for watching. All modulations work the same way on the Peak: two sources, a destination and an intensity. There is no way to modulate a mod slot intensity with another modulation source, but you have two sources.
Typical FM usage would be applying an envelope to animate the FM amount. You can, however, place another modulation sources in the second source slot. This will effectively multiply the two source values. Note that you can't separately adjust the intensity of the effect of velocity in this case, but remember that modulations apply addictively. This means, to control the amount of velocity sensitivity, you can use two modulation slots: one slot applying only envelope to FM amount (the non velocity sensitive part), one slot applying envelope and velocity to the FM amount (the velocity sensitive part). In this way you get reasonable control: you can use similar methods for any modulations. I hope this helps.
Do you have a Hydrasynth? I'd love someone to do a FM tutorial for it.
No, I don't have a Hydrasynth, though I did read the manual when it was released. If I remember correctly they have a 'mutator' for FM; this lets you use one of the other oscillators, or another sound source as a modulator (while the oscillator itself acts as a carrier). The means each oscillator can function as a 2 operator FM voice. In a sense, each oscillator works similarly to the FM oscillator algorithm on the MicroFreak; it might be worth checking out my MicroFreak FM video: ua-cam.com/video/QG8ZWO9mH6o/v-deo.html . I think you could employ a similar approach to each oscillator to get a similar result to the sound I got from the Peak. Anyway: thanks for watching, and for your comment!
FYI I started doing a series on the Hydrasynth (explorer). I explored the FM mutant a little and can see how it's both powerful, and a little confusing. I'm planning on doing a similar video to this one, but for the Hydrasynth, so keep your eye out for it.

Thanks for the feedback, though looking at the video it doesn't seem that bad: mostly just a bit of dust/some fingerprints that are accentuated by the lighting. Not that it's not worth wiping: this comment just made me imagine it looked much worse.
