I read some female patients got wrong results from Theranos which altered their cancer medication and lost all their hair due to manipulated oestrogen!
She was smart and cultivated her connections. She got away with a lot more because her well to do investors and backers would do anything to save face/public image. Remember image is everything with the wealthy.
This is honestly one of the most compelling and important accounts out there. Not just for Theranos. I think Erika's experience and message is profoundly important for business and even our personal lives.
She is very brave. I’m a Clinical Laboratory Scientist and we literally go to lab school. In our degree plan we have classes like ethics and we learn how to interpret data. So we KNOW when something is not right. And the fact that Erika had this intuition says a lot. We have resources like CAP & CLSI that guide labs how to implement testing. And we also have tools like EP evaluator, and these theranos employees did not have this or know about this but they could sense something was wrong so good for them!
She is one of the strongest people I've ever listened to on the web. Erika Cheung also shows us that sometimes the most courageous are not the loudest, but the people who have overcome severe traumas and quietly analyse what's going on beforehand. I can't imagine how difficult it must have felt as a trauma survivor, standing up against a tech giant like Theranos. She truly is a hero!
She also said that she felt ashamed because it took her a *month* to write the letter to initiate the complaint and I was like, you feel bad for waiting a month?! Hundreds of employees passed through that company, many of them working there for years, who never said or did anything. No judgment on them, I can understand the situation, but she definitely shouldn't feel ashamed waiting for a month to build up the courage when when no one else ever did.
And I'm so glad with the science today with hiv.. I don't have it but everyone in this lifetime can possibly get it, it only takes one time to get a permanent disease. This young lady is very impressive. I’ve seen her speak a few times. Makes me think the world will be ok after all, with a smarter and better generation coming up.
Elizabeth Holmes is part of the same generation. The sad thing is, our society tends to reward people with some of the traits that tend to occur very commonly in psychopaths and narcissists, such as overconfidence, extreme individualism, exaggerating your achievements, unrealistic ambition, putting your success above anything (or anyone) else, this idea of "faking it till you make it", attention-seeking behaviour, etc. And we don't reward, and sometimes even punish those who are humble/modest, have realistic expectations and aspirations, and anybody who prefers to work behind the scenes. There will always be people with integrity like Erica and people without it like Elizabeth. I think that as a society we need to reconsider who we choose to elevate and admire.
She deserves all things good in her life! What a brave , good person ! She had no rich grandparents etc but she just simply did the right thing! These two people ( Tyler & Erica ) are basically the reason millions of lives haven’t been lost
You can’t convince me that this woman’s journey was not meant to be. I am not religious at all, but I believe that we all release some type of energy into the world. So grateful that Erika’s energy is far greater and more brilliant than Elizabeth Holmes will ever be.

Jesus, and they were once in charge of the country? And this lady fought against all odds? She should be given the badge of honor.
"Maybe their judgement were clouded by this pretty blonde and blue eyed girl"- Human gullibility has no end. Millions of people believe in angel dictating a book, to one last Profit who flied on winged horses to meet the god. Skeptics are delivered death for blasphemy/ apostasy in some societies.
May be everyone wanted a con job to make more money! That's pretty much how the silicon valley works now a days. Look at Uber, does not make a single cent of profit or offer minimum salary for their drivers but the executives have million dollar bonuses every year!
Let's stop believing that those people whom invested are innocent victims. All those charities organizations knew very well it was a scam, and they still went a long and raise money for that company. And that sir ex secretary is in it with the scam. There's no secrets that can be kept from these people that govern us.
Courage isn't the absence of fear. Courage is being afraid and facing your fears, anyway. It doesn't take courage to do something you're not afraid to do. It takes courage to face it when everything is screaming at you to run away.

She is so strong. Not too long ago I fought a case against UCLA and I felt exactly like she did. When institutions have power they will make sure to intimidate you to such a point where you start to doubt yourself and fear for your life. Know that you are not alone. There will be one person or a small circle that will believe you and that's all you need to defeat an army filled with malice.
i think it was because of the mental issues she experienced after- most people are like “just suck it up and keep going” so they weren’t really attributing her failures to the assault
One of my grade school teachers taught me and everyone in the class a hugely valuable lesson. Throughout the year, each one of us were asked to run an errand outside the classroom for Mrs. Strange. Before leaving, she planted a scenario in all our brains. Then, after the one student left the room, she told the other students to agree with her no matter what she said when the student returned. The first few students bent to peer pressure and went along with the group. Before the end of the year, we were looking for the game as soon as she sent someone on an errand. But, we all learned about sticking to your truth and refusing to be gaslighted. RIP Mrs. Strange. You taught me so much more than math!

The deleting the data point story makes me wonder so deeply about how many other research groups and companies tweak data for their own means and narratives and just get away with it. I remember in college taking a statistics and ethics course and studying how people can mis-use “outliers” to warp data and in some cases have been caught for it, but my professor imagined many more slip through the cracks. Inspiring. I just quit my lab job as a whistleblower, and no one cared, they blocked me out and refused to speak with me. I tried taking it higher and HR wouldn't answer my phone calls or emails etc. I've been perceived as 'young' and 'new', 'it's different here', and to 'manage my expectations'. They're playing with people's lives here and no one seems to care, it's all about the money. It really affected my mental health. I'm about to start a new job after 4 months and I just hope they are legitimate and actually care about patients.
Denial, realization and acceptance are the three stages we all go through when faced with unexpected or troubling situations. She questioned her own sanity in the denial stage until the journalist and lawyer helped her to move to the realization stage and the rest is history.

Thank you for this TedTalk.
This is the ponzi scheme of science. I appreciate the manner in which Erica presented this Ted talk. As a person unfamiliar with data analysis, myths and science- it was more clear than anyone else I've heard.
This has nothing to do with science at all. They fooled investors without any science to back this up at all. There were scientists who sowed doubts about her whole idea from the beginning and people didn't listen to them, they probably thought they were trying to stop this young "visionary" trying to "democratize healthcare" out of greed. The reason Elizabeth Holmes' lies were uncovered was because this brave young lady got the FDA involved. It doesn't sound like you have much experience in the scientific field if this is how you believe it works.

Wasn't Elizabeth Holmes's father an Enron executive? There are some striking similarities in the attitudes and behaviour of the bosses of both Theranos and Enron.
I am no expert, but I read Bad Blood 3x. Elizabeth’s father is actually an admirable character. He worked at Enron but was not part of the financial fraud and he lost his job, along with 29,000 other employees, when that company collapsed. He and Elizabeth’s mother raised her well, gave her wonderful education and opportunities. Her dad encouraged her to live a purposeful, meaningful life. Interestingly there were nearly 700 employees at Theranos, and the one whistleblower gets heralded as the hero/heroine. Meaning? It's a culture where there are always more people willingly making a choice to let the scam rolling unless the music stops.
I don't know if I could've done what she did, I would hope I could prevail. But honestly, coming into the workforce as a recent college graduate, to question the employer - that's beyond commendable. She knew in her gut that it was wrong and prevailed.

George Schultz was impressed by people who were very intelligent when he should have been listening to people who are very honest.
She was smart and cultivated her connections. She got away with a lot more because her well to do investors and backers would do anything to save face/public image. Remember image is everything with the wealthy.
@@xspindrift8737 She also came from a rich family with connections. Her father worked at Enron as well. So this is the culture of the rich.
Holmes is fake intelligent - all words and no substance
He either got conned or knowingly funded a fraudulent enterprise. Hard to believe he had been Secretary of State.
It's being terrified and still doing what's right that makes you a hero Erika
This is honestly one of the most compelling and important accounts out there. Not just for Theranos. I think Erika's experience and message is profoundly important for business and even our personal lives.
That's an example of an ethical employee. Regardless of consequences, she revealed the truth
As a former Lab Technician, I remember my instructor in the Navy saying, “Treat every sample like it belongs to someone you love”
But isn’t this just FDA guidelines? Theranos’ labs were never FDA-approved 🤔
12:15 she says she didn't feel brave, and I'm sure she's right, but what she was feeling just shows how remarkably courageous she was in that moment
You are so admirable. I'm a person living with HIV and I believe in fair knowledge when it comes to health and wellness. Brave souls you are.
You too are brave sir
And I'm so glad with the science today with hiv.. I don't have it but everyone in this lifetime can possibly get it, it only takes one time to get a permanent disease. The 1 pill a day, they created that eliminates alot of hiv symptoms and people actually can become undetected is so amazing..blessings to you sir❤️
Erika Cheung ... your value is inspiration to many of us! Your parents must be so proud of the young amazing woman you are! Congratulations to your parents too!
Thanks for your comment
Erika and Tyler are heroes.
Erika, if you ever read this I want you to know that YOU are a true inspiration to women. You are the kind of woman that young girls can look up to. I myself have always been a very outspoken person when I feel that something is wrong, I speak up for what’s right, I ruffle feathers, I make people uncomfortable and a lot of times it makes people dislike me, a couple times it has even cost me my job. But I don’t care. I will never just “sit down and shut up” I will stand on my soap box anytime I have a chance and say what I have to say. You did the right thing.
Hard work and intelligence are important, but so is a conscience.
Conscience? That should be the first thing you throw away if you wanna be on top.
@@drebue7065 Yeah. Just look at Hitler and Stalin. 😋😋
A lot of people have no conscience...sucessful and otherwise.
Serial killer
Amen
Every start-up needs an Erika Cheung. Feet on the ground, no BS, not susceptible to the hype, just the science, just the truth. What an amazing, awesome, brave woman!
On this Thanksgiving Day 2020, I'm very thankful for whistleblowers like Erika Cheung.
This girl is awesome. She should feel so proud of her academic achievements. Many would probably not speak up in fear of damaging future career. She’s brave. I wonder how many companies had gone through the entire charade without a whistleblower.
Woman. She isn’t a girl and wasn’t when this happened.
@@hopewalker5764 Girl , woman , man , boy, alien , whatever she is , sis had the balls to speak up , as well as Tyler, the journalist John and the other people that helped expose the lies
That's a Woman not a girl dude
This young lady is very impressive. I’ve seen her speak a few times. Makes me think the world will be ok after all, with a smarter and better generation coming up.
I was just thinking about the same thing. Just hope future generations will be OK after the dust settles. 🙏🏻
Don't hold your breath, Bubba.
PT Barnum was right. There’s one born every minute
This is a strong, clear-thinking, principled woman. Huge respect.
Such a beautiful soul, may god bless her and her family
She took so much risk without thinking if any gain in return
Oh brother. “What a beautiful soul” lol.
I’ve read everything about Therenos and never knew Erica’s background. Wow! What an inspiration.
omg and the fact that she ended on the word "thrive" -- she's a survivor AND a thriver, not just a survivor!!!!
What a beautiful combination of commitment, competency, conviction and heart. A big thank you for your service to humankind.
Her college struggles was already sad enough. Then Theranos just adds to her struggles
Yes. But she triumphs every time.
She deserves all things good in her life! What a brave , good person ! She had no rich grandparents etc but she just simply did the right thing!
These two people ( Tyler & Erica ) are basically the reason millions of lives haven’t been lost
Erika’s intellect and strength of character never ceases to impress me.
You can’t convince me that this woman’s journey was not meant to be. I am not religious at all, but I believe that we all release some type of energy into the world. So grateful that Erika’s energy is far greater and more brilliant than Elizabeth Holmes will ever be.
She is a person with integrity and good conscience. Imagine George Schulz telling her she should do something else? Scary to think that all these big guys, presidents, former president and think tanks of the govt fell for the con job? Maybe their judgement were clouded by this pretty blonde and blue eyed girl. Jesus, and they were once in charge of the country? And this lady fought against all odds? She should be given the badge of honor.
Schulz is a life long GOPer. I'm not at all surprised he was about continuing the hush up and not pursuing the morally upright choice.
All the people who fell for it were idiot republicans because they were the only ones dumb enough to fall for it
Courage isn't the absence of fear. Courage is being afraid and facing your fears, anyway. It doesn't take courage to do something you're not afraid to do. It takes courage to face it when everything is screaming at you to run away.
You did it despite your fear; that is the definition of courage.
It is women like this who deserve all the attention, the fame, and the glory. An actual genuine, sweet woman. I am so tired of the fakes. Fake behaviors, fake attitudes, fake lives, and all the fake Holmes. Thank you for being so genuine, and for doing the right thing! I am so sorry that people ignored you, and didn’t believe you. That must have been so stressful. You have been through a lot, and you are here making an actual positive impact in the world. Gracias/Thank you!!🙏
Integrity is so important.
And so little valued these days
I am 69 years old and I know exactly where your coming from. Thank you for restoring my faith in the future of knowing when to speak out against what is not right.
Ironic how Holmes was also on TED
Didn't age well
Yep, Holmes was on TED, and Satan goes to church every Sunday. Recognize...
It’s not ironic.
This was a way for TED talks to rectify their mistake.
TED talks are full of scammers. I stopped watching the channel after they had that dude who claimed that desertification and climate change could be reversed if we released massive numbers of hoofed animals wherever there's bare ground. A cursory internet search, which TED apparently didn't do, revealed that the guy was considered as something of a joke by the scientific community and hadn't had anything published in decades.
@@sheckartze like milk; aged like milk....
Now this is a real strong woman. So much integrity and honesty, why can't people like this be on cover of magazines?
A hero comes in many form. An employer would lucky to hire her.
Erika Cheung 🙏🏾 Most of us never knew we could describe our trauma(s) as ‘. . . I was a victim of a series of crimes. . .’ A truth spoken, a gift. Thank You Thank You Thank You
Intelligence, honesty and integrity! Values of a successful professional and a sensible human being. Way to go Erika! 👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much Erika! You saved a lot of people. A lot of people don’t even know how serious a wrong result can be.
Definitely want to know more about the case you fought with UCLA.
Uh, strong one was Tyler Schultz going up against his own, famous grandfather
I hope everything worked out in your favor and I’m sorry you had to go through that. That takes a lot of courage

i think it was because of the mental issues she experienced after- most people are like “just suck it up and keep going” so they weren’t really attributing her failures to the assault
Exactly!!
This is happening to me this very moment, I hope my university helps me get through
@@Bimby-b how are you doing now? i hope you get better ❤️
I just read the book Bad Blood.
Thank you Ericka for helping exposing the truth!
That is cool. Is there a name for that game/scenario?
absolutely cried watching this because of how AMAZING you are. wow. thank you. you are an inspiration!!!
Her book could be called “The Outlier”....So inspiring!!!
Perfect title!
The sad part is that SOOO many researchers pick and choose their data points to make the results look better
I can't believe no one else in the lab spoke up about this. A basic principle of science is that you must include all your data.
Really
you mean lying with statistics
@@briansalcedo8444 "How to Lie with Statistics" was required reading in my stats class, lol. A great read which I still recall many of it's points today--mostly about recognizing "red flags" when stats are being used to make an argument for something
@@Costa_Conn Money is the answer to it all. Some people just want to pay their bills or student debt.
This was a class I had in 2013/2014 which is oddly parallel in time with what Erica was experiencing in the real world
Outstanding young woman! All the best for her.
Erika is amazing, I have the high respect for her, she is a true role model!
Had an ethical situation. There 23 years...walked out. No job..no possible way to know when a job would come available within 2 days I had a job. I believe when you do the right thing no matter how hard...God is working it out.
Thanks to Erika’s courage! She is not only smart but so genuine!
I love and admire your integrity and grit. We need more people like you.
I once dated a narcissist. Never knew what being gaslighted meant. I now do. I feel sorry for this courageous woman who was caused to doubt her own perceptions of reality when she blew the whistle. 🥺. Good for you young lady.
It is really warming to know that there is an entire audience praising honesty while we watch this video. To all of those who are saying the newer generations will not be as honest as the previous ones, I would like to point out that she is from a newer generation and did the right thing while many others from older generations did not (Board of Directors Grandfather figure). Thank you for this TedTalk.
Is she gen z ??
It doesn't sound like you have much experience in the scientific field if this is how you believe it works.
indeed. ms. cheung provided more information, and more succinctly than holmes did in her combined ten years of "interviews". For each of those interviews, Holmes should receive one year of imprisonment. Each of those interviews was a forum for Holmes to tell the truth. Instead, Holmes CHOSE; she's no different than Jeffrey Epstein, and every other liar who made money by.....LYING
Wasn't Elizabeth Holmes's father an Enron executive? There are some striking similarities in the attitudes and behaviour of the bosses of both Theranos and Enron.
Yes Christian Holmes, ex Vice President of Enron before it was exposed as fraud
like father like daughter. Wow. She learnt well from her dad.
Yes, both are psychopaths
I am no expert, but I read Bad Blood 3x. Elizabeth’s father is actually an admirable character. He worked at Enron but was not part of the financial fraud and he lost his job, along with 29,000 other employees, when that company collapsed. He and Elizabeth’s mother raised her well, gave her wonderful education and opportunities. Her dad encouraged her to live a purposeful, meaningful life. He hoped she would pursue a PHD at Stanford, but she said she wanted to make money.
They were all cut from the same cloth!!
She is one of the most influential people i have ever come across. Her scientific knowledge, intelligence and awareness about wrongdoings is brilliant to see.
She's the hero Elizabeth Holmes wanted to be. I applaud her for her integrity and bravery.
The bravery and fortitude Erika showed as a young student was an indicator of just how big of a role she would play in protecting all of us. She really is a Hero.
That was an amazing presentation, Erika. Thank you for saving lives.
Wonderful, brave girl. And Tyler is a fantastic lad. So much was at stake for both of them despite their different backgrounds. Glad to know that people like Erika still exist in the world.
Love this girl. Young intelligent ambitious and caring. She’s everything Elizabeth wanted to be. 10 Billion dollars can’t buy what Erika has as a human being.

Erika, you the real mvp.
Interestingly there were nearly 700 employees at Theranos, and the one whistleblower gets heralded as the hero/heroine. Meaning? It's a culture where there are always more people willingly making a choice to let the scam rolling unless the music stops.
Isn't that weird, Linnea? Smells like a scam
This aspect needs to be explored more. Many of the employees must have known.
It wasn't just one.

Thanks, Erika Cheung, for speaking up. You are truly inspiring , and you are just helping me to get more courage for finally speaking up myself.
I don't know if I could've done what she did, I would hope I could prevail. But honestly, coming into the workforce as a recent college graduate, to question the employer - that's beyond commendable. She knew in her gut that it was wrong and prevailed.
