  • For the first time, we are able to visualize the movements of Purple Martins during their migration. Watch an overview of 28 GPS/Geolocator tracked Purple Martin migrations from Erie, PA, to the Amazon Rainforest and back. These migrations took place from 2011-2014.
The PMCA is conducting this research in collaboration with the University of Manitoba, York University, and Disney's Animal Kingdom.
Purple Martin populations are crashing and we're using this data to conserve critical habitat that they use.
    A few notes:
--The locations are approximate (geolocators have error radii of up to 200km)
--Latitude accuracy decreases around the spring and fall equinoxes.
--Overall paths are interpolated between individual points (i.e. path and speed between points may not be accurate)

I love these birds. My heart breaks every August as they leave. Such cheerful, happy souls. I miss them already.

I agree. I've only had one nesting pair this year (2022) and in 2020, but their chatter, and the chatter of the visitors makes me very happy. This years pair successfully fledged four (I'm fairly certain) two days ago. That evening I watched as the fledges sat on a utility wire in our backyard, chirping, as their parents continued to feed them. Truly amazing to watch. When I think of the incredible journey that these birds are about to undertake I'm awestruck. They only hatched a month ago today (7/23). God's creation is magnificent.

It's interesting to see some look like they avoid crossing the water and go along narrow corridors of land but others go straight across the water

Such helpful information ! The daily date -stamp at the bottom -center of the screen is the most tell-tale of this study. The microscopic tiny font- size caused me to run out and buy a magnifying glass. !

Looks like they go right by my place..I always have several dozen at first and then they apparently go farther north...I'm an hour and half north of Panama city Florida.

Martins nesting in Florida are not likely to take these same routes. These birds were all breeding up north previously. I believe had these been FL birds they would have came right up through the Caribbean islands

I notice how a small number do not appear to travel back to Penn. How do you retrieve all the GPS pack? I imagine they are not cheap. But then again, are they reusable? Do you have data on the specific colonies they nest in the following year? And how many come back to the same colony. Those are most likely the ASY who return to the same colony year after year. But Sys may not. Fascinating. Hope your research sheds some light on how we can rejuvenate their numbers. I'm trying to help but in the last 3 years have only fledged 9 birds. 2016: 4; 2017: 0; 2018: 5

It would be nice if a study could be done like this with Martins from the southern states. I live in northern Indiana and this is typical of when ours return. It's interesting to see that they don't even leave South America until March, long after southern states have their Martins already.

Its funny how such things evolve! But what about the Arctic Tern? It migrates from the Arctic to the Antarctic ! 😲

The research is ongoing but data from '15 and '16 was not ready for inclusion in this animation. The data from this winter's migration will not be retrieved until the birds return in the spring and we are able to capture and retrieve the units.
