I have, for decades, found this song fascinating and disturbing in equal parts. Try as I may, I cannot imagine myself in Europe after May 1945 amid the cultural ruins of two wars. Everything was for sale to the triumphant GIs & their homegrown consumerism: 'ambitions, convictions - the works!' The realism of Hollaender's masterpiece, given pitch-perfect expression here by Dietrich, perhaps found its cynical equal in Graham Greene's 'The Third Man'?
Cashless society is coming.Stagflation is coming that's if it's not already here. Legislation to track all crops from seed to disposal, means even cashles barter for food stuff will be rare. Great song.
Fabulous Marlene. And a shout for the pianist and orchestra too --great accompaniment.
The accompanist is the composer, Friedrich Hollaender. I agree with everything you say.
