    This session was great Scott . I taught myself to read and I can improvise ...
    But I did not know the names of these scales .
    And the info on what notes to flat was new to me also .
    Thanks .

    As always, thank you for a delightfully simple explanation to help us understand music more.
    It's a bit off-topic, but when I see you with this harness, it appears so uncomfortable to me - more like some medieval invention! Have you ever tried a "Saxholder". I have one and it saved my neck! The key to using a Saxholder is to bend the two struts that go over your shoulders to nicely hug your shape as they go over, but then the weight is taken over the back of your shoulders and just into your shoulder blades, keeping nicely away from your neck. I hope you might try one and find out how good they are! (I have no connection with the manufacturer!)

      Hey Roy! I've tried everything... EVERYTHING! haha. The one I use is one I built myself. It's actually really comfortable and all fo the weight goes across your chest. The sax holder dug into my shoulder and caused a lot of pain when I played it, and when I'm playing live I need a strap/harness that is really mobile and won't go out of place. If I move the sax holder in the wrong direction it is completely out of place

      @@ScottPaddock It's great to see that you have tried everything - I guess I would be surprised if you hadn't tried the Saxholder. I take your point on it getting out of place on occasions. Well done for making your own harness that works for you!

    I thought that the myxo and Dorian modes start on the 5 and 2 degree of the scale so G myxo would start on D

    Scott, apologies for deviating off the subject, but I was wondering which microphone you are using on your horn.

      Hey! I use a Shure clip on mic. It's super easy to use, and the sound is great for UA-cam videos.

    What I hate about when people teach modes is they never teach how to apply them in musical context like cool that’s a mixolidian scale but what does it mean what do I do with it? Why do I change those specific scale degrees? What’s the difference between harmonic and natural minor? When would I use a mixolidian scale over an Ionian scale?

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  3 роки тому +1

      Hey - I've done several videos on that topic. Here are a few:
      ua-cam.com/video/Zbv3IK6VscU/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/JTD2beeE4kw/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/IDyANG1k09k/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/n3GCr4fucsA/v-deo.html
      If you go to my UA-cam channel and search improvise you'll see several more. Hope that helps.

      Same! I still don’t get the practical application of modes. Like when am I going to go: “Oh I need a mixolidian scale here”??? I’ve watched tons of tutorials on what the modes are and am still no wiser on when I’ll be using them. It’s like learning trigonometry but having no idea of what I need it for. I watched the video you linked above but still don’t get the circumstances to apply (or how to know when to apply) them. So confused!

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  3 роки тому

      @@lisawanderess Hey Lisa, do you know how to improvise? That is the main reason for learning modes. When you see a G7 chord that is telling you to use the mixolydian mode to solo over that chord. When you see a Gmin7 chord that is telling you to use the G dorian mode (or aeloian) to solo over that chord. When you see a Gmaj7 chord that is telling you to use the G major scale to solo over that chord. Modes are incredibly useful for playing a solo over chord changes. If you want to dive deep into that, check out my sax school. I take you step by step through learning how to improvise, introducing chord symbols and the scales you use to solo over them. If you check that out, you won't be confused anymore and will see how necessary it is to learn them. www.scottpaddocksaxschool.com
