- In 1986 while recording Great Dirty World in Los Angeles (Hollywood) I decided to return my Jaguar rental car after the first three weeks of exorbitant payments and instead buy an old "beater-car" to get me to and from the studio for the next few months. Cost: $750.
It was a Buick Riviera that could easily have doubled as a cruise ship, had I only taken some enterprising initiative.
For our brief time together I loved that car. It was so"un-Hollywood" and extremely "unreliable". My mechanical knowledge, always in short supply, was put to the test on every turn of the starter key.
It eventually gave out in the middle of the intersection at Santa Monica Blvd. and San Vicente on a sweltering June afternoon when traffic was at its peak.
I managed to solicit the aid of a passing giant (former football player) who for $10 helped me push it to the side of the road. For an extra $2 he prayed vehemently over the wreck and while squeezing my hand he called upon the lord to save this wayward vehicle from the path it had taken. The car never did start again that day. It was obviously beyond divine intervention at that point. I left it abandoned at the side of the road and never laid eyes on it again. Until the day it won the Kentucky Derby!*
*Author's note: I may have my facts askew on that last sentence.
lol. Love your stories Gowan! Please post some more candid videos!
At first I thought that was Larry's voice in the begining.... sounds so much like him I'm guessing it was Terry?
I love your randomness :)
