Injuries are the unfortunate part of any sport, you can't just put players in the hof that had injuries, sharp declines and shortened careers due to injuries, the hall of fame is merit based on achievements, stats, accolades ect..

Prime Penny was no joke and he was awe inspiring to watch go to work. A competitive killer the likes of Kobe and MJ. Hell Yeah Penny would be in the Top 10 perhaps even top 5 had the injuries not derailed his greatness. He really was that dude in his prime. Everyone knew he was special and most NBA fans believed he was destined for the hall of fame. Unfortunately he did have those career altering injuries and I feel robbed as a basketball fan to not have had more Prime Penny to look back on.
Yeah sadly we never got prime Penny but in Phoenix he had some great moments and decent stats during the non injury Suns run. Penny's IQ was off the charts. Coolest cat in the early 90's.

As much as I love him, I don't know if his baseball IQ was high enough. It was good, but similar players who became grounded and lost their athleticism learn to play on the ground and not depend on their athleticism. Even Jordan after 96 was more of a cerebral player and no longer a high fly act.
What i liked about Penny was his unselfishness. He had the skill to average 30 points per game but he wasn't the type of player who would jack shots after shots, that's why his teammates love him. He's able to lead the 99 magic team to the best record in the East with unknown teammates and he just came back from injury. Sad to say after that when he went to the Suns it all went downhill.

I remember when I was like 14, 15, I was learning how to play the game and I patterned my passing by the way I use to see him make passes and that became one of my strengths. All thanks to him. If he didn't get injured, who know what could've been. Ahead of his time, indeed, but he was one of a kind that he stood in his own lane and couldn't be compared to anybody. Kobe and the likes. Salute to this guy.

Penny never really reached his peak/prime as injuries definitely got the best of him. In spite of this, he was a top tier guy right away. He had size, ball handle, floor vision, speed, power, good shooter, great defender, and a very high basketball IQ, and a natural leader on the floor with great rapport with his team mates. Very few players can be said to have... "THE TOTAL PACKAGE", Penny did! His career and full potential was not achieved because Knee and other injuries start setting in right at his Prime, but the guys tallent in his youth on the front side of his playing days had already taken him and his team to the NBA Finals and laid down markers that this guy is the real deal. Ja Morant is the closest thing we have seen to Penny Hardaway since the 90s and he's really not even close yet. Penny had such great length and athleticism and mad hops. He played absolutely fearless. He's the smoothest player to play not named Jordan. He was like running water on the court and he could power dunk on absolutely anybody in the league. I REALLY liked Penny back in his early years. He was supposed to be the next Magic. What lead him to myself was Shaq. I loved Shaq. Even rocked a LSU hat back in my middle school years & was PISSED when he didn't make the Dream Team. ... Anyhow, Penny was smooth. So natural with his movement with the ball. Calm looking, yet nasty as hell. We got ROBBED as basketball fans, & I'm saying before the injuries. Shaq leaving that team just didn't feel right & changed a lot of things. Changed the way I viewed Shaq & even the NBA as a whole. It didn't feel right or settle well. It's hard to articulate exactly what I mean by that. ... League lost a little of its innocence in a way. Penny was amazing,he perform on a high level. To me yes injuries played a role,but people overlook how bad the medical staff's were back then.And how they diagnosed certain injuries cost many players carriers,but of course it wasn't intentional. Today Penny recovers 100% from that injury👍
Yeah, medical staffs were learning how to deal with injuries and the bad shoes/equipment, and ofcourse they'd let players play while injured. Tore ACL meant your career is over. Remember Steph being injury prone early in career then he changed sneakers and had a great medical staff. In the 90s he'd be a shell of his self.

By second year, Penny was already averaging 20 points with 55% percent effect field goal. By the way, MJ's effective field goal is 51% his whole career and 54% during his prime. Unfortunately, after his injure in 1997, Penny's effective field goal dropped from 55% to ~45%.
Why use EFG instead of TS%? Kobe and Jordan had a higher TS% and both scored way more points than Penny at his age. Penny was never going to be better than Kobe lmao. He didn't have the scoring ability. At 24 Kobe was averaging 30 and 6. Jordan was averaging 35 and 6. lebron 28 and 7.... Penny at that age averaged 21 and 7 with a worse TS% than all of them because even with the short 3pt line he wasn't a good 3pt shooter and he was an average FT shooter. I think a better comp for him was Lebron but he would never be as good as Lebron either. Penny was almost maxed out. If I'm generous I think he would have had like a 7 year stretch where he averaged like 22 and 7. Which is great but not better than primes like Kobe, Jordan, Tmac, Chris Paul, Curry, Lebron etc...I do think he would have been a top 12 pg of all time if he won a ring or 2 with that production....

Prime Penny was no joke and he was awe inspiring to watch go to work. A competitive killer the likes of Kobe and MJ. Hell Yeah Penny would be in the Top 10 perhaps even top 5 had the injuries not derailed his greatness. He really was that dude in his prime. Everyone knew he was special and most NBA fans believed he was destined for the hall of fame. Unfortunately he did have those career altering injuries and I feel robbed as a basketball fan to not have had more Prime Penny to look back on.

As much as I love him, I don't know if his baseball IQ was high enough. It was good, but similar players who became grounded and lost their athleticism learn to play on the ground and not depend on their athleticism. Even Jordan after 96 was more of a cerebral player and no longer a high fly act.

What i liked about Penny was his unselfishness. He had the skill to average 30 points per game but he wasn't the type of player who would jack shots after shots, that's why his teammates love him. He's able to lead the 99 magic team to the best record in the East with unknown teammates and he just came back from injury. Sad to say after that when he went to the Suns it all went downhill.

I remember when I was like 14, 15, I was learning how to play the game and I patterned my passing by the way I use to see him make passes and that became one of my strengths. All thanks to him. If he didn't get injured, who know what could've been. Ahead of his time, indeed, but he was one of a kind that he stood in his own lane and couldn't be compared to anybody. Kobe and the likes. Ja Morant is the closest thing we have seen to Penny Hardaway since the 90s and he's really not even close yet. Penny had such great length and athleticism and mad hops. He played absolutely fearless. He's the smoothest player to play not named Jordan. He was like running water on the court and he could power dunk on absolutely anybody in the league. Penny was amazing,he perform on a high level. To me yes injuries played a role,but people overlook how bad the medical staff's were back then.And how they diagnosed certain injuries cost many players carriers,but of course it wasn't intentional. Today Penny recovers 100% from that injury👍

Yeah, medical staffs were learning how to deal with injuries and the bad shoes/equipment, and ofcourse they'd let players play while injured. Tore ACL meant your career is over. He was just getting started when injuries began their attack on his potential legacy. He was a joy to watch at his peak and will always be top 5 to me.

By second year, Penny was already averaging 20 points with 55% percent effect field goal. By the way, MJ's effective field goal is 51% his whole career and 54% during his prime.
Unfortunately, after his injure in 1997, Penny's effective field goal dropped from 55% to ~45%.
Why use EFG instead of TS%? Kobe and Jordan had a higher TS% and both scored way more points than Penny at his age. Penny was never going to be better than Kobe lmao. He didn't have the scoring ability. At 24 Kobe was averaging 30 and 6. Jordan was averaging 35 and 6. lebron 28 and 7.... Penny at that age averaged 21 and 7 with a worse TS% than all of them because even with the short 3pt line he wasn't a good 3pt shooter and he was an average FT shooter. I think a better comp for him was Lebron but he would never be as good as Lebron either. Penny was almost maxed out. If I'm generous I think he would have had like a 7 year stretch where he averaged like 22 and 7. Which is great but not better than primes like Kobe, Jordan, Tmac, Chris Paul, Curry, Lebron etc...I do think he would have been a top 12 pg of all time if he won a ring or 2 with that production....
@@mustangvsz2897 Many blind spots in your analysis,the biggest 1. Penny played winning basketball,share the ball spread the floor and had to make sure O'Neal was fed. And to compare today's game to back then is a a major blind spot, in today's game Penny dominates.
@@nelp.950 He played winning ball yet never won.... ok...Kobe played losing ball yet won 2 without shaq and 3 with him? (the same center Penny had.) Kobe didn't play in "todays league" and most of the comps I used been in the league for 17+ years. The league wasn't very different in 03 then it was in 95. Similar pace, similar 3pa, similar ppg etc..Penny was nice. He was actually my favorite non-laker as a kid. I was a laker fan but loved the Magic too. Had his jersey, had a Shaq book from the book fair. I even got a Tyra Banks poster because lil penny liked him. I think he was a potential star but I'm not about to give him potential GOAT top 10 status like a Kobe. He was already 24 when he got hurt, he wasn't getting much better.
