No way, he's back! I've been following your videos for a while, especially your series on sodium. It's amazing to see that you're still making videos. And on electrochemistry too. I've been wanting to try some electrochemistry myself to make persulphates.
I remember watching this channel a long time ago, thinking about how cool it would be to be able to mix different things together and watch them change color, get hot, or explode. Now here I am well on my way to getting a B.S. in chemistry actually able to understand why those things happen the way they do. I am grateful to this channel, and quite a few others, for introducing me to parts of science where the regular school curriculum could not.

A more efficient solution to producing stronger, less spongy copper when depositing is to use assymmetrical AC. I made alkaline battery rechargers during the 80s with this technique. By using diodes to clamp the voltage over one phase, it's possible to limit the outgoing current that would otherwise pull copper ions off the deposition substrate whilst the unclamped phase deposits them. The resulting copper deposition is much stronger and compact.

Although I've moved over to mechanical engineering instead of chemistry like I intended in the past. I still find your videos fascinating ever since I found your channel back in high school about 10 years ago.
Seeing this video just really brought me back to that time our teacher showed us copper sulfate pentahydrate and how it went from that vivid blue colour to white by just heating it up, then back to this beautiful blue again after adding water. Thank you for this video, thought I'd tell you I've been silently enjoying your videos over the years and look forward to your next uploads. Glad to see you are back.

ime back in the lab again motivated & decided to have a watch of your video's for some inspiration, i to am having problems sourcing copper sulfate here in the UK, excellent idea, ime building a batch reactor to make up a few kilo's of copper sulfate. hope you are doing well & be good to see you back in the lab soon

on the junction issue I have solved this by using a crimping tool and copper tubing usually sold at model railroad stores that sell bits for building that custom model railroad layout, company name was K&S

Home Depot has copper sufate labeled as drain pipe root killer in the plumbing department, it's alot cheaper than using copper tubing, nice size crystals.
yeah or big bags from amazon for mold and algae killer. I wont complain this video is still neat but refining agriculture grade cuso4 would be better practical info.

Ace has powder that use for putting on cement for etching .
That's what I buy, 2 pounds for about 15 bucks. Stuff appears reasonably pure also.

Welcome back NR. You're going to get sulphuric acid up inside the wire insulation. You could connect bare single conductor wires, plate, and then slip silicone tubing over the bare wires for insulation

You could also use small crimp connectors (basically a short piece of tiny tubing) to fasten those sensors onto the wires.
This is sometimes used as an alternative to welding on things like the thermal fuse in a heating device.

Finally. My dose of "I have no idea what's going on but still watch" video
Great video NR, as usual. I make my copper sulfate as a by product of precious metals refining. Dissolving gold plated scrap in nitric acid followed by addition of sulfuric acid and then freezing the resulting saturated solution to recover copper sulfate crystals and a good portion of the nitric acid used. Freezing saturated copper sulfate/nitrate mixed solutions will quickly allow you to collect copper sulfate crystals down to about 1 mole per liter CuSO4. remaining in acid solution. I have many kilograms of CuSO4 crystals grown in this way, some as very large clusters. I then convert these crystals to either Cu(NO3)2 or Sulfuric acid and copper metal, depending on my nitric and sulfuric acid needs. It's a continuous process so nothing is wasted aside from some NOx off gassing during digestion and water from evaporations. Much faster than electrolysis. Keep up the great work! Steve
Use a couple of brass/copper crimps to connect the thermocouple.
It's how I connect nichrome wire to copper wire.

Incidentally if you ever want to insulate moderate high temperatures, Teflon plumbers tape is good for about 250°C max and makes good insulation on temperature below that

Use thicker solid-core wire for the leads to the supply. That should help with your heat problem.

That is a *very* neat alternative to soldering. I wonder if something similar would work for bonding (for example) metallic heating elements to leads...
The industry standard method is to use crimps.
Done correctly they last pretty much forever, and only take a couple of seconds to make.
It's when you try to make a crimp without a reasonable crimp tool that you get problems.
The (slightly) more expensive method is to spot weld. the "Tags" on tagged battery cells are usually spot welded.
I do remember at college making thermocouples by twisting the two different metal wires together, then using a hammer and small anvil. Then giving the twisted wires a hefty thump to form a "cold" weld .Surprisingly I got a pretty good success rate :-)
