Very useful, thank you❤❤❤
I will follow your advice for 2nd position. Thanks for the overview.
I will join an old time American combo for a gig this Sat. here in Seoul. 2 fiddles, 1 banjo, 1 guitar, 1 bass plus me and hopefully full house.
Loretta, Lost John Dean, Waterbound, Nelly Kane ...
I've been playing blues and am trying different styles, so used your videos to prepare. Best tutorials I found by far. :)
I was thinking of bringing a cube street amp but amid all the unplugged players it just would not look and feel right.
So I will listen more to the tunes and learn from them, trying to blend in rather than play to the front as I would in Blues.
I also understand now that the style more family oriented, every member playing an instrument with the goal to combine rather than show off which would likely be considered a sin.
Hey there, thanks ever so much for the comment, sorry for the delay! It's great to hear about your gig- I hope it went well :)
It sounds like you're adapting to the folky styles- keep learning the melodies and you're playing will develop fast
you could also post any vids of yourself playing to our facebook group:

all the best Ed
I like 2 nd possion cross harp
nice vid, very informative cheers for that.
and also i'd just like to say what an absolute pleasure it was to meet you at hbts last weekend Brother, what a gentleman you are so cheers Ed and be lucky, Matt.
Thanks Matt, really nice to meet you at the Festival! Ed
36 harmonicas and youre covered . great vid,
Yes it's hard to know where to stop, ha :)
Excellent sound, like the low pitched one,
Wow! What a fantastic video Ed!😄 Very informative! And I adore the video editing and your sense of humour!😍 Hilarious!😂👏🏻
Really appreciate your videos you’re the only person I can find that teaches how to play bluegrass on the harp. Would you ever be willing to make a video on ketch secors style of play? He is the reason I have recently decided to give harmonica a shot. Thanks.
Thanks Michael! Is he the guy from Old Crow Medicine Show by any chance?
My only harmonicas are G Ab A Bb B and C. Using those, plus playing 4 (Major & Minor pentatonic) positions in each key give me enough options for all 12 keys that I’ll ever need. That, and I don’t like the sound of anything higher than a C.
All depends on what style of playing you like :)
More positions means fewer chords but if you’re not into chords that’s fine
@@TheHarmonicaBarge Good point, but I am using a different tuning exclusively so it’s probably not applicable. The standard tuning made my head spin :D. Thanks for the good learning videos ✪
I played the harp 40 years ago. I have retired and my wife plays bluegrass/folk now. I will eventually get all 12 keys, but I just ordered a low D because my old D was toast. I do like being in the background so I am not interested in"standing out". I play in a jam that does a lot of "Dead" in Am. What key harp for 2nd position do I need? Thanks, Bob
Hi Bob, Good to hear your harmonica story. Obvious choice would be a G Harp played in 3rd Position. I would also try an F Harp or Low F played in 5th position depending on what the song is. good luck :)
so straight harp is the norm and can i have an A before i get a G? can i just play my C in 2nd pos till i can afford a G?
Hi, depends on the vibe you want. I like straight harp too but generally prefer 2nd for BG so I would prob go key of harps: C, D, F, G or high G, E
I'm not finding a link to get on the mailing list.
Link should be re-instated now at the top of the description- thanks!
For sure C harp
Will paddy or country tuning harmonica s work?
yeh sure, depends on the song and style really. Paddy R great for very fast bluegrass tunes. Country tuning great for melodies that contain major 7th interval :) cheers, Ed
The harmonica barge thank you I play both melodies and rhythm fast playing bluegrass harmonica learning crave
@@TheHarmonicaBarge I would
Like both fast bluegrass and Melodies on bluegrass harmonica styles
@@tylerjones7310 cool, I used to own a paddy! I might tune myself up another one sometime
So which one do I get lmao, u named about 7 different ones, one tryna play some colter wall/Tom petty
It Depends on the key of the song 🎵
