Now that's a nice test pit! Great job 🤠 The grey stuff you encountered is another layer (horizon) of the soil. Since it seems to contain the same kind of moraine as the layer above, the grey colour means the layer is either unoxidized, or has been depleted/washed out of reactive minerals like iron. Since it's below the oxidized rusty stuff it's probably unoxidized. It will be a lot easier to dig since the rust isn't cementing it together. Easy... besides the boulders 😅 It's fun to see how different the gold from the red oxide horizon is, as some rust will stick to the gold making it red as you noticed during cleanout. Any idea how deep the bedrock is in Rautakuru? Have you got any bedrock outcroppings, or is it all covered in moraine? I voted "go deeper" in your poll for Naruska 2023 ⛏😆
Yeah i really should learn more about understanding chemistry of moraines. I am sure it is fascinating stuff. Yeah the gold definedly had been tinted red unlike gold from Kaarreoja (atleast usually). We do have few places where bedrock is showing on the edges of the valley so it could be not too deep, but i fear that the general shape of the area indicates it could be very very deep. According to GTK maps there could even be +30 meters of top soil on the valley. But who knows... we just have to dig and see.
Jokainen kaivaja tekee omalla tavallaan varmaankin.

Juuh Artolla kieli liikkuu. Huumoria pitää aina löytyä.
