Very knowledgeable and informative and thanks for this program. One simple question - how often the piano wire need to be changed? Never unless broken? or 10, 20 years (like guitar/violin strings 6 months)? Thanks.
It depends on the climate and environment around the piano, the amount of use, etc. The general rule is, on a well-used piano, the strings should last about 25 years. But this can vary greatly depending on other factors. The strings will eventually wear out, but when taken care of properly, you can get much good life out of them.
How much thinner can you put a set of strings on a piano? I mean that for the same pitch, I put thinner strings on it so that it can be played more easily. For example, instead of 8.5 mm, I only use a 7 mm string for the lowest note. What are the suggestions in this regard?
We don't recommend changing the string sizes as there can be negative consequences. The best way to make a piano easier to play is to make adjustments to the action or adjust the voicing of the hammers.
Thickness, of course. Tension force on a piano string is 700-1200 N, in the guitar 70-100 N. Ten times less force of tension, ten times less cross section, three times less thickness. Yes, a thin wire (0.008-0.020") is a guitar string (core).
Hi Edru, Unfortunately the string size for each individual note is not consistent from one model of piano to another. It depends on what is considered the scale design of the piano.
howardpianoind , ohh i see but can you help me . I ve read that the basic strings are 13 18 and 21. Can you tell where. Or which part of.note range i will.be using 13 18 and 21. Thank you so muuch!!!
Is piano wire springy? I mean if I want to use it as a spring, would a small section (say, 2 inches, used in a toy) have the quality of a leaf spring? Or does the wire bend instead of springing?
I have a Baldwin Howard that is 50 years old. Upon tuning it after it was stored for 35 years the E3 wire broke. It is a wrapped wire. How do I obtain a replacement for a wrapped wire?
How can I use piano wire to make it work like a clamp around a round rubber boot seal the fits on the neck of a drum such as a front load washing machine? I don't want to pay $20 for their dam clamps if I can even find tow of them.
I know that we have had customers purchase our wire to make cheese cutters. I don't know if anything special has to be done to make it food safe though.
@@seriouslyreally5413 ehh depends on what metal the wire is typically all that needs done is to clean it tough I wouldn't use anything besides steel or stainless if you don't want to buy a pound check guitar strings the small e strings are pretty tiny
What you would need to do is to measure the wire with a micrometer or caliper to find out the measurement to the nearest .001". There isn't a standard size wire based on the note of the piano. This can vary some between different models of pianos.
I got a piano store girl helped to measure the wire, it is 0.035 inches, so i need to buy size 15, going by a website. Is that reasonable for kawai k15 key a7 sharp? Thanks again.
@@howardpianoind Just wonder if the replacement wire is one size off, will that make a big difference in sound accuracy for amateur like me. I did not measure the broken wire myself so not exactly sure. Also like the new tuning hammer over $100, what is it called? I am learning to tune piano, hoping the better hammer may help me not to break more wires. Appreciate your help!
thanks for all the info, never heard of piano wire until now,

Question:is there a difference between guitar string and piano wire generally ?

No, both are "music wire".
Thank you....am thinking I will only order from your store....still formulating my supply chain...

What you would need to do is to measure each string with a micrometer to see which size string is used for each note.
What diameter wire would be good for making a "U needle" for lacing baseball gloves?
I would think a fairly thin wire such as size 3 or something around that.
@@howardpianoind A few days ago I ordered 1.8mm diameter wire. I was about to order 2.0mm, but that seemed just a bit too thick.
Is this the same wire used in pop-up tents? Thanks!
It could be. I'm not familiar with the wire used in tents, but I would think it would be the type of wire that would work since it is springy.

Yes, piano wire is springy and is often used to make different types of springs.
what is a good size for gourd scrapper?
I would guess abut a size 10.

You can purchase a replacement piano bass string from our website: www.howardpianoindustries.com/custom-piano-bass-string/

Piano Wire probably wouldn’t work for this unless you were able to tie the wire somehow.
A tutorial very informative and well done .. I thank you from the bottom of my heart

Yes, that sounds like a reasonable size for that note.

I figured out the hammer is called impact hammer. I am trying to verify the wire size before conforming the order. Thanks.
