EDIT: Turns out auras do NOT work for increasing minion life with The Formless Inferno as they're not included in the calculation when the minion is first summoned. Purity auras and Commander of Darkness won't work - sorry about that! Some things not mentioned in the video: - Darkness Enthroned belt for extra minion resistance/life from socketed Ghastly Eye jewels - Replica Siegebreaker belt drops burning ground based on maximum minion life when minions die - Necromantic Aegis for a higher amount of minion life via fire resistance at the cost of losing defense
Also Mother’s Embrace belt causes your minions to use your flasks (and also Umbilicus Immortalis), so you could use a Ruby flask of the Rainbow for another 60% fire res on the minion. This scales with flask effect so you could technically use a flask effect enkindled Alchemists Ruby Flask of the Rainbow as well as an Alchemist’s Bismuth Flask of the X, which in total would be giving you 95% fire res x1.95 = 185% fire res to minions. Of note, you cannot use Mageblood, obviously, so you would basically need 2 copies of each flask and even then you would have downtime. Also, Axiom Warden is a notable passive from the elegant hubris unique jewel. It grants 80% increased maximum life to minions, and you can get 3-4 of them in some spots if you play trade league. This introduces heavy diminishing returns for further investment in minion life for any build that cares about it.
I actually put it together on pob end of last league. There are some ways to kill zombies almost as fast as skellies in cwdt. I was almost giving up on it, but this video gave me inspiration again to put it together in game. Problem is I dont have much time to play and I get really obssessed with it. I am trying to make a queens hunger bama a t17 viable farmer since beginning of league. Around 20 div, 8 mod t16 are easy, all altars taken.
I did not know that Auras don't work. That's actually really disappointing. Another potential tech to make use of the Infernal Legion with Minion Instability is to utilize Mahuxotl's Machination with Necromantic Aegis. Keystones (unlike anoints) can apply to minions and Divine Flesh would make them take 50% of fire as chaos, significantly mitigating the anti-synergy of scaling elemental resistances.
So I actually asked this question recently on Reddit, and people directed me to your video. Problem, half the people who replied have said that auras do work, the other half don't. And both have reportedly tested it and proven that it works/doesn't work. So my question - does your Edit come from testing, or from what other people have told you? Edit: Someone actually went and did some testing, and turns out auras do seem to work. I've linked the video in a reply to this post.
Ah yes, Dreamcore giving me another fix of this series, I am addicted and will drop everything to watch it. Don't know what you are doing but the mix of the way you talk about the items, how you put the video together and the exploration of synergies is simply the best. Honestly, if they removed infernal Legion and slapped on "+(1-2) to all minion gem level" in it's place this would see way more use.
Nothing gets my POE theory crafting juices flowing like this series does. And nothing helps me fall asleep like trying to crunch numbers in my head about how to compose a poorly concocted character in this game. It’s like the Tetris before bed PTSD study, but just for me!
I used the helm with skitterbros a while back (on an SRS build). The skitters basically killed all trash, with me only having to cast when facing resistant blues and rares. Ofc using skitters this way, you have to give up on some auras, but it worked surprisingly well.
You made good argument why this item needs to be buffed, at minimum it wants lvl 35 infernal legion, i would probably give it atleast +1 minion level as well but +2 would make it definitely worth consideration.
the only set up this item makes sense on is DOT minion Guardian. get a animate guardian in the helmet slot. Equip it with items that take advantage of lvl 30 IL. the fire res helps scale sentinel of radiance damage since it's based on health.
Edit: I might actually be wrong on this as I've seen some pretty well done testing from another player who used a level 1 SRS of enormity and looked at ignite damage which makes it look like it might actually work. It's a really clever way to test it since 100% crit means 100% ignite and they used it on low level enemies so small differences in damage would be more obvious. I don't want to say for sure that it works but this was the first time I've seen meaningful evidence in game that it does. Some people seem to think the belief that it doesn't work comes from the tooltip and that is not the case as tooltips are always unreliable for minions, it comes from the way minions often work with similar mechanics and people testing it. Sometimes better methods of testing can show things more reliably and that might be the case here. I don't know the exact answer but I don't want to just ignore new information in case I am wrong. You can find the video/discussion on reddit if you look, it is very recent, but my comment won't save if I include a direct link. One big issue that this helmet has is that the minion life increase is snapshotted at creation. From what I've seen in game and from what I've read from other people much of what you listed as possibilities for minion fire resistance don't work as the minions aren't created with the fire resistance bonuses from auras. This means purity of fire, purity of elements, and the necromancy ascendancy all don't apply. One thing I haven't tested is if the Mother's Embrace unique belt would apply flasks at creation or not but it almost certainly would work the same as auras and would mean losing out on the bonuses from a Darkness Enthroned. It just isn't a very good helmet and you get more minion life from an influenced rare helmet than this would give.
If that's true the item is fundamentally broken to begin with, it practically doesn't function. Even if they changed it to be based on the characters own resistance, I don't think it's worth using on a popcorn build.
Ohh nice, I played this with a burning legion animate guardian geared with fire damage over time multiplier items for almost a whole league , the clear was great and it never came close to dying so it felt good to invest in it.
Instability SRS is one of my favorite builds.. in fact.. I play popcorn SRS every single league for past 13 or so leagues (since synthesis)-(also hc and hcssf) .. so all I want to say is, thank you. this made my day..

(still play every other day or so for 1 or 2 hours - just killing time if I got any) btw - there is hit based instability (obviously) - but going for ignite is also option which many people don't know about - Enormity SRS is excelent - just crit affliction support is *70%!* dot multi on lvl *1* gem oh and you can use Noxious Catalyst on Tavukai to make them pop faster :) and Elegant Hubris is INSANE if you find Reeaaaly good one (can't wait for another episode) love your content and especialy this unique series
I just love this series. It reveals a lot of tech about former uniques I did not know. Many of these are still very useful as low/mid end options for league starters.
I’d also like to call out qotras shield in combination with this and tavukai along with necrotic aegis on the srs of enormity. Since they always crit they take additional damage and the dot multi on it is great to scale ignite. I did this combo with replica siege breaker this league and it was pretty fun
Theres another niche use that I believe I didnt hear in the video, like mother's embrace, if you summon a golem, they use your flask, and if you increase flask effect and figure a way of generating charges (like traitor), can get a ruby flask + bismuth flask + res suffix to probably over 200+ total fire resistance, which will translate to 200% increased life, a pretty hefty amount (you usually can get like 160-240 with a hubris, but that makes you spend a lot of points). All of this is just to play ignite bodyswap of sacrifice, which scales really well with minion life, that's it, but that's 2 slot, and math probably need to be done, as well as cost efficiency (mother's embrace and this helmet are cheap compared to other giga helmets, or in case of ignite, eye of malice is an opportunity cost for elementalist in terms of damage)
They killed this unique when they changed the minion life affected by minion fire resistance instead of your fire resistance. They need to change it back
i remember reading the patchnotes and league starting popcorn skellies with this helmet... just to find out that it got stealth changed to what we have now... the fastest league skip ever
I did a Popcorn Skeleton build when dual-wielding Earendel's Embrace was the only option. Clear was horrible, but nothing is funnier than twenty Vaal skeletons spawning and instantly dying on top of a boss.
Man, I was always an advocate of leaving crucible trees for uniques somehow, or at least the shitty uniques. Uniques like these would have received the extra gem or two it needed through it.
I think that really would have improved the game a ton! But at the same time, the crucible mechanic was not very fun imo, so maybe they could have simplified it for going core.
There is another use for this: Guardian. The fire aura of the minion that summons scales with it's life. It has a massive base life pool. I remember trying that out; without this helmet. As pure walking simulator; I was over a million damage. Not using any other minions. Just convoking the big guy to me. Was it top tier DPS? No. Was it enough to melt maps by him existing? Yes.
I did that as well, but using inquisitor and ff jewels to get radiant crusade, as they were dirt cheap and I didn't think guardian offered much else to the strategy, it worked decently and would have been much better if I'd known Amanamu's Gaze existed (it was my first league back after a few years). Of course it dealt 30% instead of 20% back then too.

Dark Pact works off skele life for damage. DP with chains hits a lot which would keep up wither stacks on single target.
Don't know this build archetype but I wanted to ask from something that was tech last league with Dark Marionettes. Can we use Guardians Blessing plus Herald of Purity to both speed up the minion pops, and also help keep an active aura? Thinking as something that would add a bit of clear into a build that's mainly focused on single target
My SSF necropolis league starter was popcorn SRS and I did try to use this helmet in my build, but using +2 minion with damage taken as was so much simpler and just felt better. Really annoys me how strong damage taken as modifiers are cause I feel like I always end up in situations like this when choosing helmets or body armors.
The reason I'm not using it is because there is not guaranteed ignite caused by the minion instability explosion like you can get on the other SRS unique helm. So this one is just annoying.
Or some funny jank with Guardian, that shield, shield stats apply to minions life reservation and ele relics? The issue there would be the spawn rate cap.

Which would be ever hit for SRS of Enormity. So they would explode after a certain amount of hits. This free's up your amulet space. but. I don't know which is better. Keeping your shield or your amulet. edit: just seen someone else put this. so its obviously nothing new haha.

I wonder if there's any way to reduce the maximum resistances of minions... The Transcendence keystone does it for the player, but it doesn't affect minions... If it was possible, you could get more minion life and having them die way faster.
Maybe some shield with the keystone that makes your shield mods apply to your minions instead of you? Nothing specific comes to mind off the top of my head though
You can get a lot of minion life by just using elegant hubris with 2~3 minion damage notables and 2~3 minion life notables. And this helm becomes completely useles.
Um, so I don't believe this helmet actually works this way - upon release it bricked a lot of people who were making SRS Bombers because it was actually hard capped at 75% because the wording was incorrect/bad and was never updated in the patch notes. This upset maaaaany people and bricked many builds. Make sure
