I also just want to say, as somebody who hasn't played since the release of outsiders, and only played for about a month before then. I went to the calling to see how the game has held up over the past year and a half, and I had so much fun. I didn't play any events, but ran into almost everybody I had remembered from local events almost 2 years prior. Saw that everyone there was loving the game, having fun, and saw FaB is holding strong. Within the next week I picked up a couple precons and started upgrading them, and going to our local armories again. This game has the best community out of any TCG I've played in the past 25 years! Thank you to Travis, FABFoundry, and everyone who put the event together.
First of all, awesome recap + thanks for your collection of thoughts about the festivities surrounding Calling: Portland (especially with the very first Battle Hardened Commoner event here in Portland during that weekend). I also echo the same sentiments with you in how Travis + his team did an AMAZING job overall with how that weekend went. It was definitely one of the biggest highlights i've ever had (not just for Flesh and Blood + TCGs in general) for gaming in my life. I cannot thank them enough for it. With all that said (and speaking as one of the folks in your playgroup, Andrew), despite how each of us feel and where we are with the game (especially with me), this Calling: Portland weekend was the most significant + important milestone / event for our playgroup to be a part of. It was beautiful and wonderful to see EVERYBODY from our immediate playgroup / team come out and partake / be a part of this weekend in some shape or form (especially for those who've been playing commoner for a long while and just want to see how we fare in a tournament like the Battle Hardened). I feel really proud and happy to have attended as a player representing this game in a city where I first learned how to play Flesh and Blood -> Portland, OR. Will definitely remember this particular late November 2024 weekend for a very long time. (For the past several months) Even though I'm still trying to find myself in this game once again, and as I'm taking my current break from the game (with the exception of this video suddenly popping up in my youtube feed, and I told myself that if there were to be a video that I'd consume / watch during this time when I really don't want to consume any flesh and blood AT ALL, it would be this one), I think the underlying point that I want to emphasize (above all else) to everyone (who is a part of this game) is that if you have and are a part of a playgroup from this game, IT IS CRUCIAL to have that playgroup be a pillar of support for you, especially if you're going through some tough times (that goes beyond being a part of FaB) in your life. I know this is the case for me for this 2024 year. I'm personally still struggling with where I fit in this game, and weirdly enough, that's okay - I've been taking this month to reflect and be grateful for all of the good AND bad moments that this game has given me since I've started playing in late Nov 2021. In the end, FaB has brought me really awesome, good friends (especially with our playgroup that Andrew has referenced multiple times in this video). This playgroup (and seeing them more often than not... even when I was clearly not at my best and was feeling down / not myself) is the MAIN REASON why I decided to start grinding more / get more reps in preparation for the festivities surrounding Calling: Portland (in this case, primarily the Battle Hardened Commoner event). Overall, I had a fun, awesome time during that weekend (in both performing, AND seeing our other locals come out + meeting / playing with different folks from outside of the city). Glad you had a great event!! I totally feel you that FaB needs a ‘casual’ format… When they make the current casual format competitive, it’s a feel bad… I started on Arcane sealed, so I have a lot of fond memories… But the ‘Runeblade pile’ was a bit of a bane of the format. Still fun though!!
As somebody who is coming from MTG, I think commoner being a fun player made grassroots format is where it belongs. This game has too many formats for a game that's only 5 years old. If you keep pushing all these formats to be competitive, its going to spread thin the player base and burn them out. Look at MTG for example, how many players only play legacy, modern, limited, or EDH. People find the format they like and stick to it, and they might play one or two other formats on the side.
