- I could easily make 6 different videos to get views but I chose to make 1 video because it puts things into perspective a bit better.
Welding tests from inside of a company.
These tests are the real deal and not some bullshit test in my garage like Jody from Welding Tips and Tricks.

Aerospace welder for 40 years this year. Last 38 at GE aerospace. Seen more then one person walked out for taking pix in the shop
What was there test ? I’m about to test there really soon so I’m curious what I need to practice
Wjat state do youbweld innfor ge theure hiring in mi is it a good place to work? Can ypu na
Make 30 per hr.
@@johnjabster2247 No money in Michigan move to Ohio, or PA
As a young engineer, I find this content super interesting. Keep up the good work!
As always, if any welder has a problem with the work, don't talk/type. Post a link to a video of you doing better so I can learn from you. Words mean little in our trade. Hence the reason I back up my work and where I've been with video. Thanks again for watching and I hope this helps anyone who is interested in the subject.
I’m an aerospace weld engineer and had a question regarding your weld tests at these companies. Were you ever given a weld schedule to set up the GTAW process? Or was it on the welder candidate to setup his amperage (on power source), tungsten grind angle, etc. just generally curious how all aerospace companies approach their hiring of welders. Thanks man
Subbed, I got into welding September of 2023 and going to take some of these tests would be fun even if I don’t want the job
Good luck man! Definitely get proficient with any test you can get material for.
You never know when the knowledge or experience will come in handy
This was extremely insightful man, thank you 🙏🏼 I’m currently in a welding/fabrication school in CA and hoping to land a job in aerospace. Much appreciated!
thanks for a great video....well done, cheers from Florida, Paul
Awesome video. Thank you so much. This answered a lot of my aerospace welding questions. I have an interview in 3 weeks. I'll be practicing as much as I can, but I do already have a year of tig welding under my belt. Haha
This was cool to learn. Thanks
awesome video man thanks for this valuable info
Great content! I just had a couple questions to ask. Did my first ever weld test for a company out in valencia RAH industries. I went in couple weeks before to drop off my resume and meet the boss. He showed me the whole facility and i think i left a good impression. Came in again for an interview/weld test, but the boss said we can skip the interview cause he “has a good sense of who i am as person from the first time we met” which i think is a good thing? Welded .04 stainless and aluminum, gave me a bunch of plates to go through and ended up with some solid plates. The boss said they looked good, only issue is that its slow and the practice booths are filled at the moment. He asked if i was looking at other companies and i said “yes a few” and immediately he said “i’ll see what i can do to get you in earlier” which i think is a good thing as well? He told me to keep calling him and bugging him for updates till then. He never said the words your hired, but from how it went and what hes said do you think i got the job?
These videos are awesome by the way man kudos
I have a question about testing on titanium It been few years out of welding school and looking for new job I had two new jobs interview for titanium, and I fell them so how can I Practice.?
@@israeliteman9129 first off know your limitations. If you haven’t welded in a while, don’t try to take a titanium test.
This channel is for more advanced welders.
Practice is repetition. Find a machine and put in the time.
Look at my other video tips for practicing welding without a welding machine
Well Done... Thanks...
Very interesting and insightful. Thanks.
Can you say anything about material traceability in aerospace? Like at 4:22 INC 718 is etched on the coupons, is this common?
The etching on the coupons is just from the manufacturer of the metal. When it comes to material traceability, everything down to single nuts and bolts have paperwork and inspection procedures.
There is paperwork following each part.
My mind is blown by this guy. He's got a face and voice for podcast / UA-cam content. He's not a true Aerospace welder or even half as talented as he makes himself sound. His greatest contribution to "the Aerospace welding" is just showing some ignorant new welders what's the entry well test would look like. I mean his entire Spiel is how these companies sucked. He only thanks Honeywell is an okay company and I'm sure that's because you make so much money once you're fully invested that you can't bash it. Yet he lives in an apartment??? Guys take this guy's content with a big grain of salt. 25 year Aerospace welding veteran who's welded on the F-22 Raptor parts, this whole city 7 times the speed of sound, rolls-royce's at the time developmental engine for the Boeing 777 Trent 1000 program, BAE Systems howitzer, 15 + years welding in Chambers on titanium . I've qualified on the tube and plate test and he is not experienced in it. The actual test is much more intricate and detailed. They cut it apart analyze how much penetration you got without blowing through either side ectopic. This guy is so arrogant he can't keep a job
Very cool👍🏻Thankyou for sharing. Do they ever test for titanium welds in any of the aerospace.
Yes 100% titanium is inspected thoroughly. They basically want perfect welds with that because titanium loses all of it’s strength if it isn’t welded properly. Without a purge it will turn green and become so brittle that it can shatter. Plus the fixtures for titanium parts can be way more complex. You need large gas lenses, trail cups, or sometimes the bubble thing
Lol i took a test today for Robinsons. Idk what material they gave me but I couldn’t keep an arc!!
Really!? I may have to go try myself 😂 I just moved back to California.
The HR lady when I tested was such a bitch.
@@howardhughes6212 🤣🤣🤣
@@howardhughes6212 lol yea idk wtf material they gave me for the t joint but it was a a pain in the ass lol
How do I get into aerospace man I have my degree and 2 years of tig experience and no one will even give me the chance I can’t even get a interview or weld test
What's a good temperature for the space x test
Amperage? Man I took that test so long ago. Off the top of my head I’d say 60-80 amps… maybe you can get away with more if you have a fast travel speed
Not with a union aerospace company it doesn’t matter if HR likes you or not but I have seen this at other aerospace companies
Do you need certs to get your foot into the door. Being in union pipe trades I’m not even sure where to start and don’t know anyone that I can pick their brain as far as questions.
SpaceX: No Union direct hire
Senior aerospace SSP: Union direct hire
Honeywell aerospace: no union but the only way in is through hiring agency called manpower
Meggett: no union direct hire
Robinson helicopter: Union direct hire
Other major aerospace companies are mostly non union.
All the aerospace companies in this video do not require certs. Even if you have certs they don’t care.
Each aerospace company I’ve worked for will test you in house after you’re hired and your certification is through them. I was certified at senior aerospace SSP but I can’t take it anywhere.
That’s how they get you to stay and negate outside certs.
Getting into aerospace in terms of skill is the ability to pass the tests you see in the video. As long as you can get full and consistent penetration on thin stainless steel you’re good to go.
Getting into aerospace in terms of hiring and indeed… you have to apply at certain times of the year and look for agencies that work with aerospace companies.
Then there’s some companies you have no chance.
I live across the street from bell helicopters. Their welders are trash. I know one. The reason he’s there and I have no chance is because some companies only hire locals born in the state.
In Nevada I was unable to get city jobs because locals block outsiders.
Hope the info is useful
Have you ever visited Baltimore MD?
Nope. I haven’t traveled there. In terms of states if actually welded in it’s just California, Nevada, and Texas
We’re you working at Honeywell in Torrance sometime around 2018/2019?
I believe so. Why do you ask?
@@howardhughes6212 I remember you!!! You caused a big scene and accused one of the managers of being racist because you wanted to weld and they needed you to do otherwise temporarily. I was standing like 20 foot away when you pulled that shit. You always wore camouflage pants and a marine crew neck sweatshirt. We were all worried you were going to come back and pull some shit when they fired you.
@@alexkojima6391 😂 I moved to Vegas a week after they let me go. I had a teaching job lined up prior. Honeywell I was just passing through.
But yeah that fat manager was a piece of shit
@@alexkojima6391 lol funny story! Did you guys ever meet a guy named harry park?
Very cool stuff
Aerospace welder from ft worth checking in! Lockheed Martin
Nice! I knew a guy way back when I worked at Senior Aerospace that left for Lockheed. He got more money and he's a lot happier.
Very interested in working for them. Have 3 years production weld experience, what qualifications are generally required? Lmk!!
@@GunsMusicKnives Call and ask is the easiest answer I can give you. Companies need welders. Ask HR what is required of you and they will give you any information you need. Generally no qualifications are required. Most certify in house. You just need to be able to pass their weld test and weld whatever they manufacture
You mentioned purge having an effect on suck back….how does that work?
Whether you have a purge or a back plate, suck back happens.
With a back plate, suck back tends to occur with too much heat. To solve that either move faster or use pulse.
With a purge, I've noticed suck back to occur for both too much heat and too much argon.
I've never seen suck back purging a pipe.
I've mostly seen it with flat sheet metal.
@@howardhughes6212 great! Thanks for the reply! I have another question…if you work for a maintenance facility that does welding repairs to existing components, do you need the all the different tests?…most of the work you’ll be doing will be on the bench so in theory you would only need the ratings in the flat horizontal?
@@hoodznchromez4179 To be honest I don’t think you need to be able to pass tests if you work maintenance/repair.
Welding jobs obviously need you to test.
But I’ve met plenty of maintenance mechanics that know how to weld and they never get tested.
I don’t know what they have to go though to get their jobs but I assume that having tools and being well rounded is more important for that kind of work.
Like when I was mig welding at this company virco… the guys that repaired our welding machines or our booths if they were damaged… they knew how to weld (not as good as the welders but good enough to do their jobs), use forklifts, lathes, and a bunch of other stuff.
nothing could have prepared me for Inconel...
Oh Robinson heli don’t think I’ll go back there again
10 year of tax returns lol
Good luck I don’t even keep my w2 I just toss ‘em
Lol can u say why?
Why would you bash Jody from WTAT? I learned more from his videos than everything in trade school combined lol. Seems like a good dude just trying to help people learn, (and make some money lol).
You went to a bad school and the reality is Jody doesn’t know much.
You’re just too inexperienced to realize it.
I work for an aerospace subcontractor.
That means I weld for SpaceX, Honeywell, Lockheed, bell helicopter, and more.
I’ve seen more aerospace components that Jody has ever seen in his entire career.
Furthermore, if Jody got a job at my company he wouldn’t last.
We had a kid talking about Jody a couple weeks ago and the Forman laughed because he knows Jody wouldn’t be able to weld half the components we do.
Jody is a good businessman. He makes his money from the tig finger. Aside from that he’s a content creator.
But when it comes to skilled welders, we’re working.
Bro I literally show myself on video doing a more difficult process better than Jody but fanboys don’t understand.
DUDE I had a bitch of a time with the .025 wall .025 diameter tube for the senior test. I got lucky passing that one
Hell yeah man! Oh there’s no such thing as luck 😂
I have a guy that came from space x thinks he's an expert welder but failed the t joint and butt join inconel test and over half his welds get sent back for cracks
