I hate to be the perpetual critic, but you're burning the heat treat off the edge of your knife when you scrape a ferro rod with it. Scrape with the spine, or a specific scraper. (often included)

      Agreed, Spine is much better.

I put Vaseline treated cotton balls into large diameter straws. I cut a straw about 1.5" heat seal one end then stuff the cotton into it and heat seal the remaining end. This makes for a compact mess free way to store and transport fire starters. To use, cut one end and pull out most of the cotton and light.

Dip ordinary strike-anywhere matches in paraffin.
Fill cardboard egg cartons with sawdust and paraffin. Break one off when you want to start a fire.
If you want to be really cool and high-tech, get one of those one watt blue survival lasers.
Don't depend on any one fire starter. Carry several around.

I wonder what would happen if you hit the vaseline soaked cottonballs very hard with a rock.. would the compression alone light them?

Michael you actually should be afraid of dryer lint and dryers. If you have a long exhaust tube from your dryer to your outside vent it can build up in there and catch fire. July 4th, 1999 in Crockett Texas I was in a fire caused by that very thing. I still think it was from a firework dud but the fire department said it was the dryer. We were there visiting my dads parents for the 4th and that happened. The house was gone afterward. My original gameboy some how survived. The face was slightly droopy and melted but it was still playable. Whats scary is my parents woke me up (I was 9) because I was asleep in there bed and I thought they were just saying it was a fire to get me to go to my bed... so I did... A few minutes later I was being ripped out of bed by my dad.

You should mythbust some fire starter methods too! Like tampons or whatever!

Why can't you soak tampons in vasoline and use them as a fire starter? I'm pretty sure that would work.

Get a dozen butane lighters and put them all about your camping gear or whatever you expect to have with you.

One thing to mention, listen to what they said about not lighting the matches inside; though the matches are fantastic in the fact that they can keep burning underwater, they are also terrible to use in confined spaces and places that are not well ventilated as when the matches burn, they give off a putrid smell that tends to linger for a long time; (has a similar scent as what you'd expect to smell after setting off fireworks, but is very concentrated).

    Please help!
My $200-300 acer aspire one laptop is finally giving up on me after a good 4 years. I don't want to spend too much money on a new computer cause all I did on it was download music (I know bad me) and mess around with the programs I could. I don't need to game or do anything that requires a very nice computer, but I'd like to have a bit of an upgrade. How can I do this with the least amount of money? Thank you for the time!
