- This program is the story of how humble beginnings inspired a young girl from Madisonville, La. to become one of the top multi-award-winning chef's in the nation. Along the way, at her Dooky Chase restaurant, she managed to cook for presidents & entertainment personalities, and helped shape the political and civil rights movement in New Orleans.
Narrated by journalist Michelle Miller, Leah Chase-The Queen of Creole Cuisine chronicles the humble beginnings of a young girl from Madisonville, Louisiana and how she became one of the top, multi-award-winning chefs in the nation. For more than 70 years, Edgar "Dooky" Chase, Jr. and Leah Chase worked tirelessly together to uplift their family and their community through their faith and their active involvement in social justice. The couple turned a family sandwich shop in Treme to a famous, fine dining restaurant called Dooky Chase, filled with an impressive collection of Leah's African American art by renowned artists like Jacob Lawrence and Elizabeth Catlett. Weaving together archival photos and interviews with notable New Orleanians - including chef John Folse, the late restaurateur Ella Brennan (Commander's Palace), former First Lady of New Orleans Sybil Morial, Freedom rider Rudy Lombard, and Mayor Mitch Landrieu - the film is a tribute to Leah Chase that celebrates her faith, family and food.
I am here because of the story about Princess Tiana ! I had no idea it was based off a real woman! I hope that I can still buy the cookbook! Sleep peacefully Queen Leah! 🖤🖤
Heart to heart, soul to soul, "LOVE" Leah for life!!!
What a remarkable woman. I'm from England and I have only just heard of this Lady. Sounds like she helped make this world a lot better place to live in. God bless.
Princess and the frog was inspired by her💚🤍
I have never met Mrs. Leah Chase, but I've certainly heard about her wonderful ❤️ cooking and her delicious food😊 I try 😋 to base my cooking 🍳 from her cooking methods. Thank you Mrs. Leah Chase for leaving your blue print😊 (R.I.P.)
Leah Chase born with superpowers 😊
My mother made me know about Leah Chase... because she made me learn my heritage and learn to cook...
I had the honor of meeting her and dinning in her New Orleans restaurant, the food was amazingly, best food in the world.
2023 as a graduate of culinary arts from escoffier school of culinary . I am so blessed to stumble across her and she is a beautiful queen. A true legend
An Inspiration, An Ancestor, An Angel💖
Learning about Leah Chase for the first time in 2023, as I am making a recipie from her childhood today - butter cake (from the Great American Cakes book). What an inspirational, driven woman! I admire her attention to detail when it came to her customers. It sounds like she really cared about people. Her spirit and memory will live on forever in these recipies and stories.
This was a dynamic lady! With a hearty, open to all spirit...Mrs. Chase instinctively loved preparing and serving food. From the first - she had a deep understanding of the way a good meal could bring people together, as they solved problems, mapped out business strategies, and found common ground. Whether over green gumbo, fried chicken, whatever....
Thank You and God Bless you, Chef John Folse for YOUR touch in this special Woman's Life! What a Friend!
Leah and my mom were friends. My mother is creole and also from Louisiana I love this woman may her soul continue to rest. Everytime I go to New Orleans I eat here
Chef Leah Chase was a cooking legend, how she cooked was magic! I will always consult with her how she cooked a recipe with the Dooley Chase cook book ❤

Excellent documentary! I've heard the name "Dooky Chase", but I didn't know the story behind the restaurant until today. Thanks for this history.
We went for my birthday. Absolutely delicious food.

I could watch this again and again. Thanks so much for posting it!
I visited Leah restaurant often while in New Orleans. Certainly she grew many items and cooked from scratch. Her kitchen was truly inviting.
I love Queen Leah Chase ❤️🥰 a Beautiful Soul!! Shared
I am from New Orleans and am so proud of my upbringing and history, food (which I cook) and Thank God for Lena Chase. French, Sicilian and Italian. My grandmother and mama cooked creole and I hope I pass my recipies to my daughter's. I married a man from NY 55 years ago, and have converted him to the "best" way to eat!!!! 5/18/2023
thanks 4 sharing. this lady is a treasure and such a wonderful ambassador for our great quirky state! BTW, my G Mother didn't speak English, French was all that was spoken at home, until she attended grade school and gave me a great education in cookery. late at night when I want to conjure up her spirit, I just have to open her Escoffier.
Thanks Ms. Leah
Wonderful story of her life...
This is the best way to start a week! I just found this video and loved it!❤
Love. Love. Love.
A....REAL... WOMAN 💃🧑🍳✨✝️👸🏽👼🏽🏋🏽♀️✨🙆🏽♀️💫💋💯🔥💖🧖🏽♀️ rest in peace Leah🌹
Awesome!
THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL
"Bad to be poor in those days." But everybody was poor in those days. It was the Great Depression!.... My parents - in C. Amer. , had a large family and had the same problems.
The world has changed in some not so good ways. Simple values, faith and family have suffered.
I agree with the person who said that the family dinner table needs to make a comeback.
Fabulous 🌟
Love It!!!!!!!!!!!

This video seems to begin midsentence, possibly even mid-word. What was the announcer saying before the beginning of the video?

Mrs. Chase looks like she could be related 2 the late Mrs. HOLLA😊
What star husband White???
What are you talking about?
If you’re saying was her husband white the answer is no. He’s creole I believe. We are black.
I I know exactly what descent Creole people are, however looking at the picture, of her husband, or it could have been her grandfather, or her in-laws, I saw a white picture, and she's a lighter, then the Haitians that are in Boston where I live, there's nothing wrong with the being biracial, I happen to be myself, so I didn't not mean anything offensive by it whatsoever
@@charlesjeffery1155
Creole of Louisiana are not Haitian, there's some historical intertwining but they are not the same
@@charlesjeffery1155Leah Chase was not bi-racial.
Lupita N'yongo aint got no business playing her in Princess and The Frog
She didn't play Tiana.
I think it was Anika Noni Rose
Mmmmmm
