  • Today I'm posting my two year update of being a full-time self-published author along with what I did to prepare to quit my corporate job. I shared some of my takeaways and also reflected on things that have happened over the years. Thank you for being here for your continued support. I appreciate you guys so much!
    If you watched to the very end, I mentioned a channel who gave me slot machine tips, lol. I'm not even kidding, I binged ‪@JackpotFamous‬videos when I was in Vegas then went downstairs and won over $13,000 after my bonus round completed. I'm not encouraging gambling, but if you like to play slot machines, I can't recommend his videos enough. He's a cool dude and I like his vibe. His magic slot machine voodoo worked. LOL, I NEVER WIN ANYTHING. EVER. So I was shocked AF. :)

    I've been in the indie scene since 2011. I published my first romance novel in 2014 (Weak for Him). Under Kennedy Fox, we've made USA Today 5 times since 2017. As Lyra Parish, I made the top 100 list several times on Amazon.
    If you're looking for those books, you will not find them. I unpublished my Lyra Parish backlist in 2020 with zero regrets. You can watch that video here: bit.ly/3k8P6pa

    I started not working a day job due to life circumstances, which is years before I would quit it just so my books will have the time they need. Anyways, I am now juggling freelance writing work while also working on my books. I figure working my day job is easier and pays more. I'm taking only half of what I used to earn (given I don't work the full forty-hour week with my freelance gigs, but then who in a day job actually works the full eight hours without slacking in between?)
    Not recommended to anyone, but the freedom is great. I can wake up by ten and start writing the first word around three in the afternoon while wrapping up at around twelve in the night. Good for me and I can't wait to be able to write fiction all day.

      If I would’ve had an amazing boss, I probably would’ve stayed. There is zero shame in writing and working at the same time. I’m so glad you found something that works for you! Not gonna lie, freelancing seems like it would be a fun!

    • @jelly882
      @jelly882 2 роки тому +1

      @@TheCourtneyProject The boss is great, but then some external circumstances made it impossible for be to stay and work there. Those factor made mw quit. One day, when everything lines up, maybe I will go and look for a job again. I like the stability (compare to freelancing that is, no true stability after all).

    Congrats on 2 years going strong!! 👏🏻 Despite all your setbacks, you're still living your dream. Grief will always hit you when you least expect it, so it is important that you take the time to process it. Otherwise it builds up and builds up and you're just pushing it off for future you to deal with the fallout. I'm always glad to hear when people are able to give themselves the grace and space they need to deal with hard things.
    All that being said, your video was pretty much the confirmation I needed that I'm on the right track. My partner and I had drafted up a budget and plan last year so that I could eventually quit my job and write/art full-time. We've been making cuts where we can to throw money into our savings. And we've both been contributing to our 401k with the intention of moving it to an IRA or ROTH IRA (still researching). This video gave me so much hope and that's been hard to come by lately so thank you. I appreciate you.

    • @TheCourtneyProject
      @TheCourtneyProject  2 роки тому +1

      Aww, thank you Erica! Grief is such a B, but I let her take hold because it makes me stronger in the end even if I’m at my weakest during. I dunno if that even made any sense, lol. But anyway, I’m so excited for you! It does sound like you’re on the right path to throwing ✌️. Once I made my plan, I knew every single day I walked in those doors, that I was the one in control of my destiny, not some corp jerk. It gave me my power and patience back because I had a clear path of where I was heading. My days were numbered and I had complete control of it and THAT is what kept me motivated to stay as long as I did. 😏😏 It seems you’re right there! Virtual high 5 for saving for the future right away and getting rid of the needless things! Those are two big things! Document all your wins along the way while you’re working because one day, you’ll look back at it all like a distance memory! Can’t wait for you to make it happen. ❤️❤️❤️ SUPER excited for you!

    I think people who get huge egos and try to go out of their way to put others down or show off, just didn't get enough love, validation, and support growing up. You seem like you have a family that loved you which is why you're humble. When I deal with people who have huge egos, I try to remember they're probably hurting.

    I love love LOVE your videos where you just talk about it ALL. Thank you so much for being on here, for documenting your process, for being vulnerable and REAL with us! I found your channel when I was feeling all sorts of messed up about my life choices, struggling (as we all were) through the 'Panini' and wondering if writing was what I really wanted. But your videos literally lit a fire under this girl's a$$ and I haven't stopped. My "quit the day job" plans aren't quite at the point where I can set a deadline, but I am at the point where I'm working DAILY to write my books and work to get them published.
    So yeah. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    That is exactly what a millennial person goes through. Same here, no generation wealth, working and paying uni through quit a couple of times and started again and again. Writing was a dream since childhood, being told writing is not good money. Moved to another country, trying again to listen to myself and my wants and needs. Anyhow, 37 years later, working as a nurse studying English Literature and Creative writing, while dealing with a divorce and growing an amazing girl. Dreams are not linear but maybe they are what is to fight for. Well done!!! I need same things : financial stability for a period of time and to be able to write. Now to be honest my writing is not perfect, I don't have a problem with my creative fluff but with grammar and build strong amazing sentences. Anyway! Congratulations for your success and keep going

    Hi Courtney, good to have you back! :-) I'm sorry to hear that you got sick whilst on vacation, hope you're well now. All along I thought you had an MFA or did something along the lines of creative writing as a career; as an accountant turned writer, I am encouraged, there's hope for me after all! :-) I can't wait for the 8000 subscriber celebration on the 9th, see you then! :-) I also get depressed too especially when I spend too much time at my desk but walking even if it's just for 30 minutes a day around the block with my mum lifts my mood; dwell on positive thoughts and get Will or a friend as your walking buddy, it may lift your mood! 🙂

      Haha, I have all business degrees and didn’t start writing until I was 26. If I can do this, I honestly believe anyone can (if that’s what they want to do). I also decided I was going to write on a whim after hiking. It was a lightbulb moment, and I went all in with it. I’m so excited about the celebration and I’m happy you’ll be there. I should take your advice about walking. The weather has been very nice lately and Will has been asking me if I want to walk outside because we’re going to Yellowstone over the summer. So it would be a 2 for 1-a way to clear my mind and get ready for the trails. ❤️

    Love you, babe!! Thanks for this!
    re: your recent breakdown, I'm not here to tell you you, but I know that with my medical PTSD, just thinking back to the last 2 years will lead to a week or 2 of disaster. I haven't even been able to file disability because thinking about it all is so horrible that no one wants to do it. So I'd expect you to have some awful from going back over the past 3 years of prep and carrying out your well laid plans, and I'm super grateful for you doing that emotional work for us. This was really useful info
    **And don't worry about my disability filing, if you're the kind to worry. I'm in between cancers (last year I kicked stage 3 melanoma for 2nd time, woot!) and now I also have MS, which is a listed disease unlike my rare genetic condition (EDS, go zebras!), so it will be a lot easier to just pay someone to file for me without detailing my historical misery, I hope. No worries!

      I’m sorry you’re going through so much! Yes, it does take an emotional toll when I try to think about the last two years and everything that’s gone on. I’m glad you’re getting someone to help you with the filing. I know how dreadful it is to do the hard paperwork because I’ve been dealing with a lot of my dad’s medical bills. It’s so overwhelming, stressful, and exhausting. ❤️ I hope 2022 is much better for you and internet high fives and hugs for kicking melanoma’s ass again! I really love these insights into your life, because it is so easy to make certian assumptions about a person through minimal info we get, until they tell you. I always wondered why you never just left your corporate job before, since it seemed like Kennedy Fox was killing it, and it makes a bit more sense when you explained the certian debt you were carrying.
    I do love these open videos, because it is very realistic and relatable to a lot of people. It's so easy watch an author brag about being a full time author, yet there is so much we don't know behind the scenes. Did they come from wealth, had a spouse who can easily support them while they launched their career, not that any of those are bad things. It just makes going after your dreams easier, when you have less financial burden on you.
    I do love your updates, I hope one day I can reach the day I can say goodbye to my corporate job. 🥰
    Keep killing it Kennedy Fox!!!!❤

      Thank you! I try to be as transparent as possible, and really what you see is what you get. ❤️ I like telling people the whole story because I think more are like me compared to the trophy wife who writes for fun. Nothing wrong with that, like amazing for them, but that’s not the majority who want to write full-time. It took ten years, and while some of them were harder than others, I just kept moving forward. Even if it took 20 years, I would’ve kept at it. ❤️ Even now, there is no finish line.
      I wish you all the luck in the world and if I can answer any questions you have, please ask. I’m not special, just relentless.

    I've seen SO MANY dissappear. I used to write primarily MC Romance, because I started in 2013 and that's what was hot, but I've definitely had to pivot. While I've kept the small-town feel, I've had to move to other genres because MC isn't as big as it used to be. So much has changed since I started, and I'm lucky to still have a readership. At the same time, I've had to find newer readers, different readers, and it's hard, but I'm sooooo glad I stuck with it!

      Then you know exactly what I’m talking about! Omg so many people have disappeared and i have to remember they really existed because I’ve got the paperbacks to prove it! So crazy. I’m glad you’re still here…I think we all pivot at different points. ❤️❤️

    Woohoo! Congrats again on 2 freaking years of living your dream and for winning the jackpot in Vegas! Hearing the steps you took to make the leap was really insightful, as I've been thinking about starting the steps to convert from freelancing to writing full-time as it's taking up all my creative juices, and I wanna be able to have more time to tell my own stories (whatever those may be). My calendar has been marked, my alarm set and my evening cleared lol. See you Saturday!

    Don't write for the sales.....write what your truly passionate about!!! Writers gotta write ✍️✍️✍️ so why don't they stop over writing on tired out tropes.....write what YOU want....with NO fear!!!!

    • @TheCourtneyProject
      @TheCourtneyProject  2 роки тому +2

      Yep, that’s right. Even if someone writes something that’s not “in” right now, doesn’t mean it won’t be the next big trope next year. All of this is cyclical, so you have to write what you love, or it’s nearly impossible to keep going. I’d have burnt out a long time ago if I was forcing words and worlds I didn’t enjoy. ❤️❤️

    Congrats!!!! And thanks for being so open and honest. Wish I had been as strategic as you were🤦🏿‍♀️. Question: how did you clear your car note? We are a 1 car family at the moment. We planning to sell our car (with the car note) and buy a much older (much cheaper) car...

    • @TheCourtneyProject
      @TheCourtneyProject  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you, Tee! Appreciate it! So when I started snowballing credit cards, I would put the extra I was previously paying toward my car note. So, essentially I just shifted funds slowly as I whittled down the debt amount. We also had some great royalty months and I’d put my “minimum savings amount” in savings and if there was extra, I’d put that toward my car too. So it was a combination of the two. ❤️

    What is your technique or how do you manage to release so many books a year. Is there some kind of formula that you follow for each book that you hit and you know that that book is ready and then go to the next one. How are you able to do that? Thank you so much!!! ❤

    I'm only a minute in, but I need advice on writing through grief. My brother died last week. He was my best friend and the person who read all of my rough drafts, and supported me. He read a first draft I was working on, and I decided to change a plot twist and not tell him so he could be surprised for the next readthrough. Then he died. Him not being a part of this book eats away at me, and I'm so broken I don't know how I'll ever continue it.

    • @TheCourtneyProject
      @TheCourtneyProject  2 роки тому +1

      I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Grief is such a B and I wish I could tell you how easy it is to move past it, but I don’t think I’ve figured that out yet. I try to think about my dad and what he’d want me to do. I try to imagine his praises and how damn excited he’d be about my books and writing. Instead of allowing the grief to consume me (don’t get me wrong, many days/weeks it did and still does), but I try to put my best foot forward to honor my dad in any way I can.
      You have to be kind to yourself and take the days you need, but always look at the big picture. How can you honor your brother and everything he meant to you with this book? What would he want you to do? ❤️❤️ If he read your work and gave feedback, he believed in you, and your story, and your words! You have to put it out in the world, not just for yourself, but for him.
      I wish I had the right answers, but it’s still a struggle for me. Some days I can laugh about things my dad did or said. Others I just cry because he’s not here anymore.
      I don’t think the loss/pain ever goes away, we just learn how to cope and live with it. I’m so so so sorry for you loss, and know that the memories will always, always, always live inside you. It’s basically all I have left these days and I hold onto them as tight as I can. ❤️❤️❤️

    When working corporate and publishing, how did you find the time for your partner and maintain that relationship?

    • @TheCourtneyProject
      @TheCourtneyProject  2 роки тому +2

      I was very strict with my time. Dinner was always our time, and I was 100% committed to being a wife while we ate with no interruptions. It gave us time to chat about our day, catch up on what was going on. So from the time I got home until about 9PM, it was time for me to hangout with the husband. Then at 9 until bedtime, I’d do my writer tasks, then go to bed at 1 or 2 or 3, haha. I had to be at work by 8-8:30 so I couldn’t stay up too late and learned I needed at least 5 hours to function. It wasn’t always easy, especially under deadline. I think Will knew that I wasn’t doing this as a hobby, that eventually I really would quit my job, and then be around him 24/7. It also helps that he has his own hobbies and is just as busy as me. ❤️
