10:19 I used to bodysurf the Wedge way back in the middle to late 70's. I was from Santa Monica and was part of the "South Bay Crew" that would invade Newport on rare occasions. Anyway, I nearly broke my neck on exactly the same type of wave that injured this poor fellow (10:42). The Wedge is really dangerous. If you have a big wave under you it can easily be doubled or tripled in size by the jacking action of the outgoing reflecting wave. Worse, you only have about a foot or two of water beneath you and as as result, are essentially pile-drived right into the cement hard sand. I knew a fellow that compressed and fractured two vertebre in his neck on a Wedge-wave just like this one. He was temporarily paralyzed but some months later managed to regain almost all his feeling an motion but could never quite walk the same again. I feel really sorry for this fellow. The Wedge for sure ain't Pipeline, but on big days you are equally at risk of broken necks or vertebre at this shorebreak. Fuckin-A!
I used to bodysurf the Wedge back in the late 50s and early 60s before people started using boards there. I had my suit ripped off a couple of times, but escaped any serious injury. We would take off on that side wave and try to make it across the bowl. It was more makeable back then and the wave was much thicker. Because of the wave, I started using an underwater takeoff to avoid that inevitable drop. It worked really well and worked well in Hawaii, at the Pipe and other big spots.

I have so much respect for you skimboarders. Always have. The first time I ever saw a skimboarder throw his bbn board down, skim out to see them tut run around and surf a wave in and get covered err red up was as t Seal Beach believed vfc e it or bbn ot, on the North side of the pier. It blew my mind. I was like, "You... you can do that? IIt's allowed? What you skimboarders o at the Wedge rivals as my surfing going on today including foiling and big wave 4iders. Hell you guy uys ARE big wave riders. So much balls yo do w hth at you do.
I love watching these guys. Even the guys getting so worked is entertaining to watch. I always cringe when they get closed out or those strong waves propel them straight down. That is how you get paralyzed for sure. The thrill of the sport though, you never know what mother nature has in store once you committ to dropping in!
I am okay with going to my grave not knowing what that close out feels like. That first clip of Tyler is just a no from me, dawg. That is an ungodly weight of water being forced on your head with the help of gravity as well...
It's an amazing feeling tbh. In my like 15 years of surfing, I found you get the least hurt if you are in the barrel. Everytime I had a neck injury or something gnarly it was because someone else dropped in on me or I didn't make the barrel and got worked on the sand

@Jason Karl Definitely man, I'm from Hawai'i so I've seen every type of wave except deep ocean waves. My homebreak has the most broken necks and backs in the world lol just pure shorebreak in ankle deep water. The worst I got hurt was on like a small 5-7 day but someone else dropped in on my landed on the back of my head cause they didn't know what they were doing. I was underwater couldn't move and ended up having to hitchhike home. Could barely walk for a week and half. Thank god i still can
What is it like when the wave Swallows you up. Can you provide a video of that aspect of the surfing. I know what it’s like to get pounded by a wave but these guys get swamped and pop up and go again.
Unfortunately no. He broke his spine and passed away during surgery nearly a year later. I posted those clips so that people can see how seriously dangerous it can be out there.
My heart goes out to his family, riding the wedge since 1977, I’ve always felt the smaller inside surf at the wedge is most problematic, being slammed to the bottom on a 15’ outsider, is way safer than a5’ insider, where, outside waves break in really deep water, inside waves break on tint broken sea shells ... and some sand. Brutal.....
That was Gene Peterson who was a Wedge regular. The Wedge at high tide and a good size swell is when you break bones, because it is so shallow and when the lip of the wave is so thick and pushing so much water if you land wrong it can be deadly. Really big Wedge you might drown, but probably wont break any bones usually.
Do they still call it " body wompin'" That's what it was called back in the day. Dude took me to Del Taco for egg burritos, stole the trays and went to the wedge. Buggy fins and the tray and ride, so much fun. Props to the skin boarders though, fun to watch
1:17 - 1:20 I'm thinking this guy lost too much speed, there's no way he's going to make it, he's gone, RIP. But then he gets boosted AND MAINTAINS HIS BALANCE! The control at 1:23 is 👌can only imagine the rush he felt xD probably the best wave he'll ever surf 😅🤣I've replayed this section so many times and I havent even watch the rest of the video.
That guy with the green wrists and anckles, didnt he get concussed at the start? xD Him and the guy with short sleeves are beasts. Sweet fucking barrels and ollies xD
So true I skimmed 30 foot waves at the wedge before I met tfue. Now I'm a skimmer turned pro streamer on fortnite making millions and only get arthritis instead of broken necks and shells in my teeth
That was the day of days

@@elliothuh669oh no !!! ...😢 you sure ?
One of the narliest skimboard and or wedge vids I've seen yet. Absolutely firing.
Kid with the heart on his board absolutely slays it. Silky smooth style
Love this channel, uploading some of the HIGHEST quality skim footy on the internet despite not being the biggest channel!😄🤙👍
Day 3 into a skimboard wedge rabbit hole and this is the best yet. Just can’t stop watching this madness
Highest form of entertainment on youtube for sure. Sorry to see the guy at the end being hurt. Happens in every sport really. He deserves a medal.
Put it on his gravestone...
These guys are absolute lunatics. As an old man who used to Surf I can't imagine subjecting myself to this kind of abuse.

Man that’s crazy surfing waves that size directly on the shore, it’s like beyond a shorey lol great stuff !
I have one question! How did those wetsuits fit over nuts the size of boulders?

7:17 Beautiful Suzuki style! RIP Bro!
So amazing and completely brutal, the best yet 💪🏻
I wasn't skimboarder back in the day and those heavy shore brakes feel like a water bed falling on you it's truly our Young Mans sport..
Where I,m living those kind of waves we call "cerrojo" in english "lock wave" two second ride but fun
3:57 might be the sickest air I’ve seen on a skim

There isn’t mass without gravity. So it’s all due to gravity 🤙🏼
@@bringmethehorizon129 Holy shit, you just Neil Degrasse Tyson'd my entire life of surfing. We're not riding waves bro... We are waves...

8:20 Twenty foot shore break!
It's big enough, but that's not twenty foot. Maybe ten.
Callme Ishmael 8:27 sure looks like triple overhead to me.
@@LearningFast It took a little backwash bounce at the end, but now way 20 ft.
@@callmeishmael3031 actually it was at least 15 foot when it jacked up
Sick AF! Balls for brains every last one of you!! Hope homeboy at the end was OK!! Salute from CCTX!

The 6 down votes on this video are from the guys that got pummeled out there for our entertainment.
How much fun can you have in one day,,
Do you just have to bail out of these waves if you surf or BB? or do you just ride them til it closes on you?
They break so hard, no chance to bail or punch out backside. Have to eat it every time, you know this going in

OMG, just from watching my neck hurts and I got bruises from the sand and stones inside my wetsuit.
That catapult section of the wave is crazy 1:41

I think no, he broke his spine then passed away about a year later. He was a regular named Gene Peterson
Anyone know what happened to the body surfer taken away in a stretcher?
According to what I’ve read in other people’s comments here, they said that he didn’t make it :(
Where is it???
YO WHO SUPPLIES THE BOARDS? TIA
How messed up was the kid at the end? Nothing permanent I hope?
Someone get a grill for all that damn RAW BEEF !
Dear God why would anyone try to ride that Devil Wave 🌊?
Absolute carnage.
That was a sick one at 4:12
there are 2 waves on each side?! crazy lmao
@ 27 seconds thats the sound of the wedge ringing your bell 🛎
Lived in Newport for years '06-'10 and it was wild watching skimboarders get more and more ballsy each year. These guys have a death wish
Jesus... this is insane.
I can’t believe some of those over the falls weren’t fatalities 👀
when that backwash goes into the barrel of an inbound wave, you can see the fucking explosion occurring inside that barrel. crazy
@7:10 gopro camera lost in the wash
Do priettos not age?
This is sheer carnage!
0:45 . Washing sand out of his ears for a month I’m sure.
