      Thanks for the suggestion! A stickhandling video is definitely on my list as well as the best situation to do so. But clearly, scooping the puck up on my blade will not be included in said video...

    Tip 3 is really gonna help me. Once in a game, it was a 1-1 tie against the best team in our division. I made a save and the puck went into the corner. Then, their guy passed it to the slot, and another guy took a one timer, and it went right through my 6-hole. Now I know that if I use tip 3, those pucks won’t get past me. Thanks Man!

    The width of your butterfly should vary depending on your depth relative to the net; if you've telescoped out then your butterfly doesn't need to be as wide in order to take away the bottom of the net. Having a wider butterfly than necessary can result in pucks that would have otherwise missed being kicked out for an easy rebound.
    To work on your butterfly slides, focus on getting the knee of your drive leg up (your drive leg is the one you are pushing with). Raising your knee up towards your chest when you're down in the butterfly is what re-engages your blade against the ice, allowing you to push laterally.
    Additionally, placing the foot of your drive leg in front of your landed knee (the one still on the ice) will push you backwards as well as sideways; placing your foot of your drive leg behind your landed knee will push you forwards and sideways. The former can be used to slide back to your post without rotating your entire body beforehand, and the latter can be used if you need to cut down the angle on a shot but don't have time to regain your feet.

      Great points! Thanks for sharing! I touch on a lot of these points in my Butterfly Push video but it's great that you mention them here in the comments. It's funny to think that from a non-goalie perspective, "butterfly" seems relatively simple, but when you dig down deep into the nuances, it's really anything but. Thanks for your comment!

    Good stuff as always. One of the other ways to get better at your butterfly... Go to pickup and practice! Most rinks let goalies play pick up for free. Practice makes perfect and Muscle memory is formed by repetition. Another great point about getting your butt up, I see a lot of beginner goalies really sit down after they start their butterfly.

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  5 років тому

      Thanks for your comment! Great point about muscle memory! The butterfly motion is pretty unconventional from an anatomical standpoint, so your right, repetition helps build up that muscle memory. Thanks for the insight as always!

    I started playing goalie last year at 55 years young.
    Learned to butterfly slide by going down into butterfly facing net and using cross bar to assist with feeling the leg push eventually working to letting go of the crossbar and butterfly sliding.

    Here is a butterfly tip some might not want to hear. lol. You do not always have to go down in the butterfly! Sometimes I see goaltenders going butterfly on everything. Shooters will pick up on that and start timing their shot to go high as you go down in your butterfly. If the skater has a very accurate shot, he will likely score if he has time and space. I think this is especially important if you are a small goaltender since you cover less of the net when you go down in the butterfly.
    I really like these videos, and I hope this UA-camr continues posting more outstanding content!

    Great stuff. A little additional for #1 Driving your knees to the ice. The mechanics are your Hips and Ankles as the pivot points. Start with a Wide stance, then bringing your knees together (hips) rotates the pads down to the ice (ankles), eventually disengaging the blades from the ice. Once you get good at this, you can literally SLAM your 5-hole closed.

    Good stuff, as usual. Only suggestion I will make has to do with recovery from the butterfly: rather than use visual acuity to locate the puck by turning your head towards the puck's new location, have your shoulders follow as well. This has the advantage of turning your arms in the right direction and half your body is already turned in the right direction. Then, when you engage the recovery leg, half your body is already pointed in the right direction. You can extend the benefits of upper body rotation by swinging the non-recovery leg as well until that leg's skate makes contact with the recovery leg skate. At that point, you've done almost your entire rotation, and your recovery leg is used to get you up and push you out towards the puck.

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  5 років тому

      Great points! That's always the ideal when it comes to efficiency of movement! Its funny how subtle adjustments and observations in a goalies game can lead to significant positive impact. You always have the best goalie insight! I think the biggest thing is developing discipline when it comes to movement. Often times for me at least, the easiest route is for athleticism (or lack thereof) to kick in and make a diving desperation save. What makes guys like Carey Price so good is how calm they look in those "desperation" moments. As always, thanks so much for you comment and contributing to the conversation!

    great vid, about the hands bro, your hand position is dependant on where the shooter is. If the shooter is in close, your (catcher) hand must be upright and extended towards the puck, or u get beat top shelf. Same with blocker side but its not as easy. If the shot is coming from a 5~ yard distance you should/could drop your gloves towards your pads like you do, unless u can spot the release and make the reaction save. I've gained so much since I implemented these techniques..

I've only ever played roller hockey and there isn't too much sliding for a goalie. I also wonder if it's my pads, they are 2000-2001 don simmons excalibur pads and i don't think butterfly was a thing then. I do have some warrior g3 pads on order and i'm hoping it makes a difference. Your opinions, insight, techniques, help, is greatly appreciated.

    • @magictooth2

      stretching is key! If you're stiff/locked up nothing will work as it should.. @KB9813 5 років тому

      @@I_TalkSick I'm not a medical professional so I have no idea. But, glutes are mainly a stabilizing muscle and it's advisable to try and maybe stretch them to help with rotation. It could be hip impingement (ua-cam.com/video/agmYorhOxmc/v-deo.html | ua-cam.com/video/Pd_bJMOM0I0/v-deo.html).
      I would figure it would be either your abductors or adductors. Your adductors are completely abused by goalie stance and the inward movement of c-cuts, abductors outward movement of c-cuts.
      See a physiotherapist and maybe ask for dry needling with estimulation. Might not work for you, but since I had a muscle injury it worked for me.

    Thank you for this! I’m a field hockey goalie transitioning to ice. We don’t really use butterfly in field hockey (it’s too hard to get up from dirt) and we can’t catch the ball plus we have a smaller stick and wider goal. It can be really hard! We kick the ball away or smack it with a hand blocker (on the glove hand). So I’m excited at the prospect of using the butterfly, having an actual glove to catch, and a smaller goal. I guess it’s about perspective. Question: I spent ten years as a gymnast. Do you think my flexibility and reflexes will be helpful?

      Thanks so much for your comment and welcome to the sport! I knew a field hockey goalie... (a long, long time ago...) so I'm familiar with the position. While your flexibility as a gymnast won't ever hurt you as a hockey goalie, the skills you learned with regards to angles and reading plays in field hockey will probably help you more! While there are different nuances between the sports, the basic premise (and mental mindset) will help you adjust to the game much more quickly. Good luck and thanks for your comment!

    I've had a question if you could please answer. I am a goalie that's like 5,9 around that and my butterfly isn't secure enough and I think it's my pads as they are 30+1. Do u think the pads are the reason why I have this problem or its something I'm doing?

    I learned decades back when many goalies, even in the NHL were, like myself, around 6' tall. The most popular style was the low crouch then drop to butterfly. Today the majority of goalies are BIG guys. And their style of play radically different.

      It's pretty amazing how the position has evolved over time! Even just 10 years ago things were different! I think this is what makes goaltending so unique in sports. It just goes to show that we are cerebral athletes!

      @@VOGoalie Hey I like that. And I think it was always a "cerebral" position, to us. Just today the teams put so much more emphasis on the position. Thanks for your reply!

    Tip for beginners working on speed: if you have another more experienced goalie to help you, stand in front of each other and "race" them for going into your butterfly, recovery sliding, etc... Make sure you're doing it safely and correctly, though; you don't want to hurt yourself.

    I know this is an older video, but I went out to an open skate a few weeks ago with my pads for the first time. When I went down, I kept landing on the actual front of the pad, I just could not get it set up right. And when I forced myself into the position with the fronts out, I couldn't do pushes, the pad was in the way of my skate. Are they just too big? Is it hip rotation issues?

    My daughter is 9, has been ice skating only 1.5 yrs. Anyways I played hockey, but not goalie. She is very enthusiastic, but I don’t know how far to teach her before overloading her, & she doesn’t get any 1 on 1 coaching for her position. What exercises can she do to make the butterfly stance easier, & what are some REAL BASIC tips I can share with her?

    Quick question. I've been getting mixed answers for this so I came to a real goalie for an answer. If you are right-handed, should you wear your glove on your left hand? Most goalies do it this way, but I know some goalies are righties but shoot left while playing the puck, but they shoot right while skating. It seems hard to shoot left as a goalie is you shoot right as a skater? is it sort of a practice thing?

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  3 роки тому +1

      IMO, it's a personal thing. Most goalies wear their catching glove on the hand they'd catch a ball with (i.e righties wear a baseball glove on their left hand). As one's natural ability to catch (a puck) generally is more critical than a goalies shooting and stick handling ability, most right handed goalies end up working on shooting left rather than learning how to catch with their right hand.
      As a way to get around this, most goalies today use an overhand catch glove stick grip when shooting. (as opposed to gripping the stick like a player when shooting).
      In the past, some goalies would turn their stick over (keeping their blocker in the same place and catcher in the butt end of the stick) but this can be too slow to do for fast moving plays (and most goal stick blades back then we're straight).
      Ultimately, it's really up to what feels most natural to any individual goalie. IMO, there are very few things a goalie can do "wrong" (I like to look at goaltending as being more efficient or less efficient) as long as you're stopping the puck and having fun, it's all good.

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for asking! I do have a blocker specific video planned, but in the meanwhile, I generally like to have my blocker slightly angled so as to more easily deflect shots to the corner (as opposed to straight back to the shooter). Also, wrist mobility can really help with this. Hopes this helps some!

    My son just started and is having a hard time getting his pads square on the ice. Hes going flat on his knees. Does he just need a wider stance?

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  3 роки тому +1

      Sounds like he might need to loosen up the strapping for better rotation. It could also be his toe attachment depending on what pads he's using. Biomechanically, he might need slightly more flare in the butterfly and/or ankle rotation (ie when dropping to his knees, he should try to have his skate blades be more parallel to the ice as opposed to them being perpendicular.). Hope this helps!
