John Lennon and Freddie Mercury were 2 of the most talented people we will ever see or hear.
It was all about timing. Hot Space was in the works when John was killed so that is when the song was done. Queen were fans of the Beatles and they did know each other.
Written in the style of John Lennon. Which explains some of the unusual lyrics.
Amazing Lennon style. Freddie has this gift. He can tribute to Lennon in Lennon’s style and to Elvis in Elvis style. If it wasn’t for Freddie’s voice I would say it is Beatles. John Lennon was one of Freddie’s idols
Agreed. The homage is the production..straight out of Lennon's mid later era.
I was 12 years old the first time I heard The Beatles. Yes!! It’s about the music. Freddie outdid himself- thank you Hap. So perfect for this day-
Freddie also does a really good and interesting Lennonesque style in this one he dedicated to John Lennon.
A great tribute to John Lennon & written in his style. Yes from the Hot Space album which when it was released didn't get good reviews but probably because it was ahead of its time.
British critics were many times so brutal towards Queen and Freddie throughout their career. Many of them talked about four zeros after their first album. Also Freddie ´s Barcelona album had very bad judgiing in UK...👑
@@Danielik25 Once looked up some of the old reviews the music press has written about Queen, and they are really baffling:
from calling the Queen II album a Led Zeppelin copycat (just because LZ has also called their second album Led Zeppelin II) to a Rolling Stone critic seriously calling Queen “the first truly fascist rock band" in a "News of the World" review (because "the song We Will Rock you is fascist" ...) to another Rolling Stone guy calling Freddie's voice a "passable pop voice" in a review to "A Day at the Races" (an album that contains amazing vocal performances like "Somebody to Love" or "You Take My Breath Away").
They truly hated Queen.
EDIT:
BTW the reviews I mentioned, lots of other reviews, interviews, old articles, etc can be found here: queenarchives.com/
I can recommend especially the Rolling Stone reviews to everyone who suffers from too low blood pressure, because they almost need a trigger warning... ^^
Only you- Hap- 🤣 slurp slurp! Loving the way you listen so carefully and break it down-/
The slurps to me are created by Brian's sixpence scratching on one of his guitar strings, I have heard it many times and never thought of it like that, new ears give a new perspective, nice call.
Freddie Mercury wrote, “Life is Real” a dedication to John Lennon two years after his death. He composed a song which emulates different John Lennon song styles, and the lyrics are mostly about Freddie's realization that John was dead, and how real life was. "Life is Real" is related to the John Lennon lyric "Love is Real” from his beautiful song, “Love.”
He actually composed the lyrics before the music. Sometimes a lyric will get me started. ‘Life Is Real’ was one of those, because the words came first. I just really got into it, pages after pages, all kinds of words. Then I just put it to a song. I just felt that it could be a [John] Lennon-type thing.”
It’s Freddie’s best John impression. It’s surprisingly convincing, and I think it is intended with warmth and love. Freddie’s falsetto mimics Lennon’s. I like the way Freddie delivers his final spoken parts.
This song also took on a new life after Mercury’s death and is now regularly performed as a tribute to him and as well as Lennon.
This song appears on Queens tenth studio album, “Hot Space.” It specifically is titled, Life is Real ( song for Lennon).
Here’s a quote from Freddie:
John Lennon was larger than life, and an absolute genius. Even at a very early stage when they were The Beatles, I always preferred John Lennon’s things. I don’t know why,” Mercury revealed, adding, “He just had that magic… to be honest, I would never like to put myself on a par with John Lennon at all, because he was the greatest, as far as I’m concerned. It’s not a matter of having less talent, just that some people are capable of doing certain things better than anybody else, and I feel that I’m not equipped to do the things that Lennon did. I don’t think anybody should, because John Lennon was unique, a one off, and that’s the way it is. I admire him very much and that’s as far as I want to go. When I heard that Lennon was dead, I was shocked and dumbfounded.
EXCELLENT TRIBUTE! BY QUEEN TO JOHN LENNON TO SAY THE LEAST! AWESOME REACTION HAP3. 👏👍🥰
I believe that there is nothing known about Lennon are the other Beatles members that they knew Queen in person except for Paul McCartney who was Freddie's neighbour and wrote the song "Once upon a long ago" for him and Freddie as a duet but Freddie had no time and Paul released it by himself. There is a recording (on UA-cam) were Lennon is singing Queen songs. Just some facts you're asking about. Nice reation. Thanks.
Hot Space, one of my favorite Queen albums, love this song! Freddie was so ahead of the times with his lyrics and songs! Great reaction Hap!
Beautiful song, from one legend to another. RIP Freddie and John
Sembra scritta da Lennon ma Freddie è un maestro anche in questo 👏👏👏💘😘🌹grazie Hap 💞
Here is what Freddie actually said about the song in 1982, "I basically write the tune. I write the song around the melody most of the time. Sometimes a lyric will get me started. ‘Life Is Real’ was one of those, because the words came first. I just really got into it, pages after pages, all kinds of words. Then I just put it to a song. I just felt that it could be a Lennon-type thing.”
Finally somebody reacting to this song! I
t's a Pity that people speculate in vain to try to Divine biographical meaning about Freddie's life from the lyrics of Bohemian Rhapsody, yet ignore songs like this and "Life is Real" which offer far more direct insight into Freddy's life
Morning Hap, I am Aliper from Indonesia, big fan of the Beatles since I was in Junior high school, big fan of Queen since I was in Senior high school, and 8th of December really mean something to me because it's my daughter birthday, so in one side I feel sad but in the other side I feel happy, so I don't know what I am feeling. I have heard this song hundreds times but never noticed that slurp.. LOL.. Thanks Hap for react this song... 👍
Nice tribute by Freddie to John...
Wonderfull reaction! You should also react to 'Put out the Fire' by Queen. It' also from 'Hot Space' but It's one of the rockier ones.
Phantastic Song!
First listen for me - beautiful and unusual song. The style definitely reminds me of Lennon.
fantastic I love the song amazing freddie sung this thank you for sharing.... 💜💙💗
Thanks for reacting to this song, especially on this day. It really is a beautiful tribute to Lennon and the Beatles, a band they really admired.
Beautiful lyrics, on point, vocals on point (as always, by the way)...what more to say?
Queen 👑👑👑 Lennon 💖💖💖
Wonderful reaction Hap!! RIP John Lennon ... he was my favorite Beatle!! Probably cuz he was the trouble maker!! 🤣 one of my first memories of the Beatles was sitting in the living room, eating TV dinners, & watching the ED Sullivan Show. My mom screamed thru their whole performance. So, it makes sense that she loved Queen, too. 🥰😍 Miss my mum!!
They became acquainted with the other Beatles, but as far as I know, they didn't get to meet John.
The day after Lennon was killed, Queen performed Imagine live as a tribute, since they were in the middle of a tour.
Great reaction!
Such a great song ❤️ also great reaction ❤️
Queen also sang Imagine in concert. Available on audio only on you tube.
Hey HAP. Doesnt FREDDIE sound like John here even the music sounds like something that Lennon would do. FREDDIE was also devastated when John got killed. Preach brother tell it like you want. I would like to think that John knew how he was admired. Both John and FREDDIE gone to soon. R I P JOHN LENNON. Take care HAP. Love ya. Your girl , QUEEN BEE.
Loneliness is my hiding place 🎵🎶 (it’s so me)...music will be my mistress🎵🎶 (also me)...life is cruel, life is a bitch (love that part).......Another great reaction Hap! Thanks 👑
Freddie did this song trying to write and have it sound like a song that John Lennon would have written. Lennon was I believe Freddie’s second favorite artist that died, the first being Jimmy Hendrix. I don’t really think Freddie was putting anything about his life, except his honoring John Lennon. Nice reaction though Hap. I know that Freddie was friends with Paul McCartney, as I’ve seen them on video after Live Aid together.
Beautiful song. Hot Space album has got very good songs, can't understand why it is always put down.
Beautiful tribute to John Lennon, the lyric very special and interesting, never heard it before. Yes I heard the breastfeeding when you said it, haha funny Freddie..lol
Another great reaction! Never realized there was a slurp in there, so thank you for your excellent attentive listening! 😊
Hap, please react to ROCK IT (Prime Jive), written by Roger. ua-cam.com/video/UPOgN7MuOug/v-deo.html
There was a split vote as to whether Freddie or Roger should sing it - so they compromised: Freddie sang the intro then Roger took over and really rocked it! You will enjoy it!
Also, I’ve been requesting for months SEE WHAT A FOOL I’VE
BEEN Live at Rainbow’74. ua-cam.com/video/qSV_8auqBYM/v-deo.html
And the Hot Space album is a great album too. Different from the other albums, that's right, but good. Alternative sound, yes, but with great songs. I like that.
☮️💜
I heard it slurp.
A wonderful tribute for John i think some of the lyrics do pertain to Freddie.
Love your reaction.
Say Hap I just heard Roger Taylor singing ‘New Frontier’.
I think you may like it. Roger only.
Sure, this is a tribute to Lennon and is done in a Lennon-like style, but I've always thought it was some seriously dark introspection from Freddie on how he felt about himself and his own life. My .02.
The Beatles singing this song would not be out of place.
I just know that Lennon was inspired to create his new album (after a long break) by Queen's album 'the Game'. Roger was really proud of that. Oh hey, here's that clip where Lennon is singing Another One Bites the Dust and other tunes by Queen ua-cam.com/video/VmXF5DuUm7o/v-deo.html
I suggest "Machines by Queen" as next reaction to honor the horrible release of Cyberpunk 2077
Queen and Paul Rodgers do a cover of Imagine at Hyde Park.
Yeah they played it to honor the victims of the London terror attacks in 2005.
Say Hap I just heard Roger Taylor singing ‘New Frontier’.
I think you may like it. Roger only.
