I broke my right ankle over 40 years ago after skiing and am in constant pain. Plates and screws have been removed. I also have lots of pain on left ankle for favoring. Although two Duke University ankle replacement sergeants couldn't see much wrong via normal x-Ray, they both realized severe arthritis after 3D Scan I believe. I have been told by both that I am good candidate for ankle replacement. Do you think that I have a chance with this procedure saving my ankle? Does the cartilage come from another part of my body?

Is there an advantage of this procedure over a total ankle replacement? I have advanced end-stage arthritis in both ankles but I’m only 58 years old and very active and I’m looking at my options.
Absolutely there is an advantage. The advantage is that the surgery is minimally invasive and stimulates the regrowth of your existing cartilage so you have a normal ankle joint (that feels and functions naturally) vs having implants with plates, screws, etc. being inserted into your body that can seriously restrict mobility and the activities you are able to perform after surgery. That statement at 0:36 speaks volumes to me. I was born with severe bilateral club feet. I have had 11 surgeries to fix some of the associated issues and complications from it. I was told nearly 15 years ago my next steps are an ankle fusion or replacement. This was when I was 18-20 years old. I have been dreading the day for that to come to pass. My left ankle pain is almost entirely arthritis at this point and now happens even with light to mild walking. My right ankle is a combination of arthritis/supination but is less easily inflamed. I am curious if this type of procedure is something suitable for severe club foot or if it would be less worthwhile as it likely couldn't overcome the deformities or maybe prone to atrophy or prone to rapid deterioration?

I was at an hospital here in Norway and the doctor said that there is three things they could do to my ankle. On was ankle fusion, the second was to look inside to see if there is something to remove but that don't work so good he told me. And the last thing was joint replacement. I had a complicated ankle fracture when I was 15 years old and I'm 53 years old now. I have had pain in my ankle ever since it was broken. It gotten worse this year because I love to run and I was running to much and now the pain won't go away. And I can't even run for 5 min without extreme pain. I’m 30 years old… in 2018 I had my left ankle shattered and I had two screws put in it. In 2020 I had BOTH my hips replaced due to avascular necrosis, and now this year my right ankle is broken in the same spot my left one was years ago.. my talus and subtalus, my surgeon is saying the only option for this one is a fusion but I am truly terrified of fusing my ankle considering I already have so many replaced joints… I wonder if they could help me…

I broke both bones in my leg which was a compound break the big bone came out the side of my foot. and almost cut my foot off. Got it fixed and like this man it never felt like it was where it should be so with that being said my Dr wanted yo do a ankle replacement 10 years ago. He said he did not know how I was still walking. It is now pretty much fused on its own. But still painful and I can not bend my foot and was curious if this would fix my problems. I know there would have to be bone removed first. I have always been very active and this limits my life.

And I'm a hairdresser I stand all day and at the end of the day my ankle is so so badly swollen. I don't have medical aid I wish to God that someone can just help me. Shame my friend also broke her ankle and her toes went scew it turned under her foot and she walk on her nucles of her toes they can't do anything for her because she is diabetic. She lost one toe so far. It's hard living in South Africa we're they don't help you the right way.
Is it possible to reverse an ankle fusion? I've broken my ankle twice, all 3 bones the first time, 2 bones and a bad dislocation the second time(almost a 90 degree turn to the right). The hardware from the first surgery(screws) bent/broke pretty bad, second survey they put in a lot of nails/rods that were removed about 5 months later. I feel like I may have even rebroke it a little in my brace a few times(or at least tweaked it hard enough to hurt for a few hours-days).

I believe this translates to "can you run?". Right now, David has not been cleared for high-impact activities. However, as he progresses in his recovery, this will soon become an option again.
Hello @Arif. This can vary widely. David had serious, extensive damage, so his recovery program is ongoing and monitored every 3 months during his first year of recovery. August 2019 have suffered an catastrophic work accident resulting in 3rd degree distal tibia-fibula fracture with massive bone loss. Multiple surgical procedures, bone graft with marrow absorption. He received an operation to repair his ankle cartilage. The physio work was after to help him recover from surgery.

I believe this translates to "can you run?". Right now, David has not been cleared for high-impact activities. However, as he progresses in his recovery, this will soon become an option again.

Hello @Arif. This can vary widely. David had serious, extensive damage, so his recovery program is ongoing and monitored every 3 months during his first year of recovery. We do the same for all surgery patients. Patients are cleared for activities by our rehab team as they advance in their personal recovery program. August 2019 have suffered an catastrophic work accident resulting in 3rd degree distal tibia-fibula fracture with massive bone loss. Multiple surgical procedures, bone graft with marrow absorption. Unfortunately closing to a 2 years mark from the accident, still using crutches to move around. Micro vascular surgent performed an amazing job. Orthopedic surgent on the other hand, kind of abandoned me.

Hello, Mauricio. Unfortunately, we do not. Dr. Stone pioneered the surgery he performed on David and it is not yet widely adopted by orthopaedists. So we wouldn't know who to recommend in NJ as it is unlikely any surgeons there would be practicing this surgery.
