Hey man I'm at you this weekend at the Volvo gathering in Maryland. Have to watching this video I really wish I would have stayed more to talk to you. I've got a pretty good oil leak in my silver s60r. Thanks for the video now I know where to look
Not a drop of oil leaking from my 96 850t5 after 22 years of daily use. Best car ever!!! this will be my last Volvo though since they will be building only electric cars soon.
Excellent as usual sir. I’m replacing the camshaft seals, how do you lock the cams so don’t move, other than using , buying the expensive tool? You mentioned a tool to install the crankshaft seal. Thanks a lot
NA engines can also leak from the non-turbo oil return line port. it's like a freeze plug in the block casting. it can pop out allowing open access to the pan. awkward to tap the plug back in
Thank you for the information Robert! On 3:47 those block panel gaskets, by any chances would you be able to provide a reliable reference of where I can purchase any? Thank you.
This helped a lot for the turbo oil line leak I have. Thanks. I was wondering if you have a video on a power steering leak as well. I have a 2002 S60 T5 2.3L that spews power steering fluid everywhere. I just cannot find the leak for nothing. If you do have a video, I have not been able to find it. Thanks.
if looking at engine from front of car i have an oil leak on the left side towards the top and rear and just below a few inches dripping down. what might be the problem? Thanks Robert you are a wealth of knowledge.
@@RobertDIY sorry for being so lame! its a 98 s90 and towards the back of the motor on passenger side i see a steady leak (drop) it looks like a hose. going to the shop tomorrow and thought i could act like I knew something. lol. have a good one!!
How you doing Robert ever since I bought my volvo a couple months ago I been watching ur videos and gaining knowledge thanks to you, i have a 2000 volvo v70 se non turbo with 178,000 miles my question is I was driving on the highway doing 70 to 80 mph my oil light started blinking and started making noise an white smoke out the exhaust I pulled over the engine was extremely loud rattling smoke was coming out the oil cap an oil was leaking from under the intake manifold by the throttle body I check the dip stick the car had oil , could it be the oil pump ? Motor sounds like it got no oil .. motor was fine before ,driving every day back an forth to work 100 miles a day
Hey Robert love your diy videos... I have a 2000 volvo v70 non turbo v70... I have a oil leak just above the heater hose inlet not sure of the technical name of the component.. any help will ensure a good repair on my end
@@RobertDIY question, I just got this 2003 XC90 2.5t awd with140,000 miles. Passed glove test, and timing belt seems to be done. Do you think these vehicles are decently reliable ? I paid $750 with intentions to flip but kinda like it
Great information Robert, I have a 2012 S60 T5 and I had to put 5 qts of oil in it when the oil light lite. Do you know of an oil problem on that year and engine?
Most cars use oil. You should check the oil level weekly until you figure out how much oil it uses. You should top it off anytime it gets less than a half a quart.
Thanks for your QUICK reply, Its my girls car and she said she saw the light, I checked and it was 5 quarts down. It did loose a quart over the next 6 weeks. I check it every Saturday, The dealer ( she brings it there) changed all the oil/filter and Breather box and said don't come back unless you see the light. On the Volvospeed forms they are saying Volvo knows of an issue that is so big they wouldn't recall. They are addressing them one at a time. The car is CPOwned so it is still under warranty. I was just wondering if you knew of issues on a 2012 S60 or of any Oil issues that sounds like what I am experiencing. Oh and your video's ROCK you are very knowledgeable, I had a non turbo 850 and two S60's and a V50 and have done timing belts and struts on them.. Thanks again- Doug Jones
Well, people these days are not taking responsibility for their own cars. Gas and go. WE should check our fluid levels, tire pressure, keep the paint clean etc, as often as needed. We should know how long it took to lose 5 quarts of oil. Did it take 50 miles? 4,000 Miles? Was it ever properly filled after the last oil change? What happened? If you don't check after the service , then at least monthly, how can anyone tell what's going on when no one is monitoring it. Check the level weekly until you can determine how much oil is being lost/consumed. How many miles does it take to use 1 quart of oil? If less than 1,000 miles then I'd be concerned. My opinion is, everyone driving a car should check certain things themselves monthly, unless someone else takes on that responsibility, like I would for my wife.
Hi Robert I have a 06 Volvo xc70 doing timing belt and cam seals , do the cam seals leak only due to pcv blockage ? PCV system seems ok I did replace one hose on it. Car has 180,000 runs like a swiss watch:) Just trying to take good care of her. TY again for all you do much respect!
Robert where did you say the PCV valve valve was I need to change cuz I have the oil leak going down into my plugs I have a 2000 Volvo C70 2.4 my name is Jake
Hello Robert, I have a volvo s60 p2 2.0 liter turbo. I have an answer to you. There is an oil leak on the top of the engine. Will there be oil leakage caused by pcv? Thank you.
Thanks for this video. Around minute 3:40 you are talking about block panels on the back of the engine. I have a 1996 volvo 855 turbo driven around 100.000 miles that is leaking at the back of the engine there is oil everywhere on the back of the engine do you have a picture, video or some link to the gasket needed to fix this gasket ?
No, I do not. Make sure that is the source of the leak and get the kit from the dealer, about $8. Easy replacement, just unscrew them, remove old gasket, install the new gasket, don't over tighten the screws.
hello Robert Im new on your videos and you explain very good all this common problems of leakings and tips, recently I bought a V70 XC 2001 the car came with many mechanical problems between them the transmission failed, but notice an excessive Leaking of engine oil, I remove the top plastic cap on de head and note that it was full of oil and some of the screws had been changed by the previous owner 4 of them that are around a spark plug duct were swept from the thread, I change some of the screws by others slightly longer and tightened well the oil drain decreased considerably but is still droping oil and falls on the Cv boot joint passenger side, and I do not know where is the problem, I will have to change all the oil seals ?? thanks in advanced. best regards!!
Question. I have a 1998 Volvo V 70 2.4 L base model. Looking at the front of the car . Back top side of motor. There is oil on the top. I understand it does not have a valve cover gasket. Any suggestions ? There is also oil near the distributor cap. What kind of chemical should i use to clean oil stained areas?
If you repair plugged pcv system do you usually end up having to replace the seals that were leaking due to pressure? or do they self correct after the pressure is removed?
Hi Robert, i love your channel. I love volvos. Some time ago a purchased a '99 S70 for $350. The owner said it needs a new catalytic converter and the code shows it. I registered this vechicle in a state where i dont need a smog. So, can i just cut off the cat and bypass it? Ive done this with other vehicles and they ran fine. Lance.
Robert thanks for your help in this matter. If the oil cap leaks ( I think) after an aftermarket replacement for my 98 s90 what else could be the problem? Thanks
So I have a pretty bad oil leak rite at the oil pump, took the pump out replaced the gasket and the o ring along with the cam seal. Still have the leak. It’s not a clogged pvc I checked that but other than messing up the gasket or o ring only thing I can think of would be the pump itself. Seems like that thing would be dang near indestructible though. 02 v70 2.4 turbo any thoughts.
@@RobertDIY well I wasn’t actually the one to put it in but looks like it’s leaking from the cam shaft too smh. Trying to find a dual cam locking tool and then I’ll put it back apart.

at 6:19 where you mention lower PCV box hose leak; is that the consistency of motor oil or a kind of "blow by" thinner goo? i thought my oil sender was leaking, but can stop it, now I think it is the intermediate block seam. 2005 S60 2.5t with "only" 118k miles
Hi Robert, if any gaskets are leaking because of a pcv issue, will it stop leaking once you fix the pcv or would i need to change the gaskets too? Thanks
When changing a upper crank seal on a 2002 volvo C70 2.4 5liter turbo should you change the bottom crank seal and timing belt also please let me know 🤔💡
@@RobertDIY thanks so much because I have my car in the shop right now and then replacing a seal and they're telling me that they have to change all three seals on a 2.4 turbo Volvo C70 and telling me that they had to change the water pump also and the timing belt that's a lot of work for one seal just to be leaking so I'm glad you gave me this information now I will possibly not have to spend close to $2,000 for some work to get done on a 2002 model car if it wasn't necessary peace and thanks 😊
Hi there, my neighbor is recovering from covid where he almost died. His 2001 s60 2.5 turbo is leaking horrible. To the tune of 5qts in a week and maybe 75 miles. Puddle under looks to be passenger side. Buyouts is everywhere. Any help finding out where that much oil is coming from before I get started on it. I have never worked on a Volvo, but looks to resemble a Honda a little bit.
Hi Robert I have a 00 s70 I had to change all the oil seals on it but when I put the car back together I have a code for the exhaust being advanced. All my timing marks are on the car runs great but it throws a code {sry don't remember what the number is its been so long but its an advanced timing) The main questions I have is...1st - Is it possible that I over tightened the vvt gear 80ftlb and it is not letting it operate properly with the oil pressure?: (Could I have it to tight that it is pinching the gear an bearing)2nd - if I do have the proper torque lbs should I loosen the 3 bolts on the gear an center it on each other an reset the timing, what happens when you center the gear? is that how they come from the factory on the car to begin with?Sorry to ask this on this video clip I don't know how to get directly to your email to go into more detail. Thanks and hope to here from you soon. Also I have never worked on a Volvo b4 you have taught me a bunch !!!!!!!! and THANK YOU!!!!!!! A BUNCH!
Hi Robert Thanks 4 all the info I pulled the vvt hub off and reset all the marks put it back together and the check engine light is gone. The only ight that's on is the service engine and that will gout after I put an oil change on the car. 1 thing that will make this video easier 4 1st timers to understand is that after you pull the hub off and reset the 3 bolts and gear to the center position "this is were it was confusing this should help every1" Like Robert said turn the hub and set it to the mark snug the bolt rotate the hub to see how many teeth it turns past the mark and count them, loosen the bolt turn the hub counter close wise that many teeth past the timing mark snug the bolt check it to make sure its on the mark then finish following Roberts directions for putting it back together. Not trying to step on your toes Robert just making it easier like I said for some1 like myself that wasn't quite sure or positive about what I was doing.Again thank you for all your info I couldn't of done it without you THANKS Have a Great Day!
Hey Robert. I have a question. I have some positive air pressure in my crankcase for my 2.0t 98 V70 AWD. I've checked the PCV system, its all good. Did a compression test - it is 155/160 across all cylinders and yesterday checked the ports in the oil pan. EVERYTHING IS CLEAN AND WITH GOOD AIR FLOW. Nothing is clogged. BUT, the positive air pressure is still pushing oil out of every possible hole. The other thing is that the positive air thing is only happening when engine is at idle. When i rev the engine to about 2k rpm, there is vacuum in the crankcase. Can you help me with this magical problem? And thank you for these videos. I don't know what would i do without them. Keep up the good work!
Not when the engine is at idle. When I rev the engine a little then the glove is showing that there is vacuum. When at idle, the glove is blowing off the cap and smoke is coming out of the dipstick. But is there a chance, that the PCV is just faulty? Because it is not clogged up, it looks brand new. Or you advise me to change the PCV oil catcher box and the hoses? Thank you for the fast reply.
Hi Rudis, similar thing happened to me, it was a clog on the PTC, on the admission plastic tube, very easy to clean! I think Robert has a video about it somewhere. Double check the hose connecting the PTC to the engine as well
@Robert DIY what is that at 03:53? I mean, my 850R does leak there, and it causes hidraulic lifter noises, or, the oil is crap? Only 1000 Miles after change, I don't quite know, it just started.
Huh? There are 3 access panels on the back of the engine. They don't cause lifter noise. I have no idea what kind of oil you are using or what filter you have installed.
@@RobertDIY We put Total Quartz 9000 in it, viscosity is 5W40,and,a japanparts filter. The engine leaks oil, on the passenger side, at the back of the cooler. PCV was changed 40.000 Miles ago.
Hi robert on my 2000 c70 the oil filter seal has failed twice cauing large oil leaks. I notice the leak and i get under the car and the seal is on and then in one spot its pinched off causing oil to seap. It has happened twice in a few weeks . have u ever seen anything like this?
I bought a Volvo v70 2002 2,4T and my car started to get oil light and when I put more oil in the car I se that it’s dripping oil and leaking from the right side of the front and I wounder what it can be and what I need to check and replace
Baah.. Looks like i got a rear main seal leak on my volvo 850..... I tested one of those "engine stop leak" oils but does not seem like it has taken effect..
Hi Robert, i’ve purchased a ‘95 850 GLE with a 2l engine and I’m experiencing a subtle oil leak. Opening the bonnet i see oil in the superior part of the engine, right under the oil cap and in the left side of the engine. I’m assuming/hoping it is only due to the fact that the oil cap rubber has hardened a lot so that by changing it the problem will be solved but I have a question for you. Is it possible that the leaking is due to the valves of the fifth piston? The one on the far left. TY in advance
@@RobertDIY Thank you very much for your quick response! I've seen the video and took note of your advices. Today i've changed the oil cap with a new one that unfortunately is not original but i'm trying it anyway, if it doesn't work i'll try going right to a Volvo service. I've also purchased a "stop leak oil additive", done few miles and then put the baby asleep, tomorrow morning i'm gonna check the results. Thursday i'm bringing the car to a mechanic for a check up so i'll have more infos and will then decide what to do next. Anyway i'll surely follow your advices, but first of all i need to know where the oil leak is coming from and solve the problem, then i'll go for the timing belt and so on...

Hi RObet. I have a 2001 Volvo S80. Just changed the water pump on it ( couple of weeks ago). Is there a bleeder to take out the air from the cooling system? I'd done the usual turning the heater on and let the engine run and top off the radiator. I feel some pressure when I squeeze the upper radiator hose.
Thank you for the quick reply. I think the Thermostat of S80s is located inside the water reservior. I am thinking if I push that knob on top of it, it may release the air. Thanks for the info. LOL
Dear Robert I have a 1996 Volvo 850 non turbo 2.4l i found out that there is low oil in the dip stick i but the car on the hoist and look all the driver side were covered with oil splash to the back of the car I added about 2 L of oil but can not locate the leak can you help Thank you
Thanks for the video Robert. I have a 2013 XC60 that has developed an oil consumption problem. Volvo has engines with this problem and have a protocol in place to fix. First, they overfill the oil by 1.2 quarts and replace the dipstick. This seems strange to me because of course it will look like it's burning less oil if you fill it up more. The second step, they tell me, is to replace the cam cover seal but I don't see any oil leaking under my car. Wouldn't I see oil if it was the seal? They tell me it burns off before it leaks externally. Any thoughts?
Robert I have a oil leak but can't find it. I have 1999 Volvo V70 XC turbo it leaks on the driver side and some oil blows up on top off the motor and blow out the back of the car on to the back glass. You think a turbo return line but I can't see it leaking from there.
I'm hoping my leak is just the oil pan, engines been out before i owned it so it's anybody's guess. Are any of the pan bolts or accessory bolts ones I should use thread sealer on? Also, is the outward facing sensor on the front/center of the block a oil pressure sensor?I have to replace the valve body soon anyway may just knock them both out.2006 V70R 270,000 miles
Ay Rob, is it difficult to replace the camshaft seals by yourself? Can you make a short video about it of link to one? I havent located the leak yet but by the looks of it, its dripping right under the belt assembly
Hey robert on my 2000 c70 it was leaking oil bad and the intake cam seal popped out. Got a new seal put it in and it poped out again 2 weeks later. Im not sure why it pops out even tho the seal is fine. Any thoughts?
Corteco. However the oem cam seal did pop out and when i took it out it wasnt damaged , it was just as good as the new corteco one. Put the corteco seal in and same issue the seal just popped out. Maybe due to a clogged pcv?
Robert, Can you do a video on differences in Volvo models and years and what are the best years and models, in your opinion? It would be cool if you were at a Volvo lot and could show the different models and years and give your knowledge and insight on the differences, favorites and reasoning why some models and years have less problems than others. Thanks again

Hey Rob jus had a oil change on my volvo 850... '95 the technician said he saw oil around the transmission...any tips on how to proceed....check engine light pops on (looks like the coolant system with fan icon) it only pops up for a few seconds then goes out when I accelerate from a stop)
My girlfriend took it to jiffy lube yesterday...I assumed they checked the coolant level....I will check it when she gets home from work....is there any major concerns I need to be aware of...thanks again for your help..
Hi robert, your videos have been very helpful to me since i bought my c70. I just rebuilt my t5 engine and it is running really well but its leaking oil real bad. It looks like the oil is coming from the hole which you show in this video by the transmission side. I replaced the crankseal (i replaced all seals in the motor), could this still be where it is leaking? I tested PCV with the glove method and it isnt inflating, but it is not sucking either. Could the pcv be the problem since it isnt sucking in the glove? I really dont want to pull my engine out again to change the crankseal but i guess i have to.. But should the glove be sucking in to the oilcap? At least it isnt blowing. I have no idea how my brand new crankseal can be leaking.. Thank you in advance Robert! Do you think i have to pull my engine and replace the seal again or could it just be the PCV?
Do you know if i can buy this tool in europe? I live in sweden and i cannot find this tool except for v-garage in canada and that will be too expensive shipping. I will try red line seal saver, though i do not think it will work.. its worth a try, then i probably will buy a real volvo seal but i hope i can install it without the tool.
I believe the rear main seal is leaking, and yes i should do it right since it is a big job just for that seal. I installed an aftermarket seal that maybe is not the best, that is probably why its leaking..
Thanks again Robert, you really have saved me a lot of time. Been looking for a leak for the last hour plus and sure enough you did it again.
The owner's manual probably recommends that you check the oil every time you get gas.

Probably the front cam seals.
Question. I have a 1998 Volvo V 70 2.4 L base model. Looking at the front of the car . Back top side of motor. There is oil on the top. I understand it does not have a valve cover gasket. If my pcv is clogged, and i do a pcv replacement, do you think that could stop an oil leak?
I doubt it.
Hi! I have a slow leak, it’s not the pan, it’s not the filter but I can’t place where it could come from. It’s a 2007 Volvo s80 v8 AWD
ouch, probably the side of the engine. Timing cover I think.
Hello good video I have a leak between transmission and engine but its not engine oil it's ATF would that be torque converter issue
could be a input shaft seal leak or an internal pump seal in the transmission.

If you repair plugged pcv system do you usually end up having to replace the seals that were leaking due to pressure? or do they self correct after the pressure is removed?
Most of the time the seals need to be replaced.
Lance.
No, you must get a new cat and keep it feed and warm or it may die.
Robert thanks for your help in this matter. If the oil cap leaks ( I think) after an aftermarket replacement for my 98 s90 what else could be the problem? Thanks
Well, I would get a Volvo part. Then see if the PCV is serviceable.
Probably damaged the crank seal when you installed it. Did you use a seal installation tool?

What do you mean "it's all good"? Does it pass the glove test?
Not when the engine is at idle. When I rev the engine a little then the glove is showing that there is vacuum. When at idle, the glove is blowing off the cap and smoke is coming out of the dipstick. But is there a chance, that the PCV is just faulty? Because it is not clogged up, it looks brand new. Or you advise me to change the PCV oil catcher box and the hoses? Thank you for the fast reply.
Hi Rudis, similar thing happened to me, it was a clog on the PTC, on the admission plastic tube, very easy to clean! I think Robert has a video about it somewhere. Double check the hose connecting the PTC to the engine as well
hugo fernandes okay, thanks. Will check the whole system again.

Probably not.

Not sure what mechanic you are communicating with. Most cars use oil. How many miles do you drive before you are 1 quart low?
At this point about 1800.
I'd consider that normal. Check it every 1,000 miles or every other week. If you have to add each time you check, check it more often.
Thanks for your replies!

If you did NOT use a seal tool you likely damaged it.
Are you referring to the Rear Main Seal on the back of the engine where the flywheel mounts? If so, I don't recommend taking chances with that one.
I believe the rear main seal is leaking, and yes i should do it right since it is a big job just for that seal. I installed an aftermarket seal that maybe is not the best, that is probably why its leaking..
Seal install tool.
