  • Last time you saw this sexy silver 1979 Pontiac Firebird we were taking it out for a short test drive after completing a few upgrades and some maintenance. Unfortunately on that drive another issue popped up, well more accurately boiled up. We've got an over heating issue and unfortunately it's a bad one, time for some engine teardown!
    As a factory 4 speed this bad bird comes with a 400 Pontiac V8, which at some point in the semi distant past HAS been rebuilt however it's time to pull the heads off and see just why we are overheating and how much work needs done before it can go back together. Pontiac 400 Engine Teardown time here we go!

    PCV capped off. Don't forget to run a line to the PCV cooler. LOL! I cracked up too.

      Long long LONG ago if you go back to the 1970 LeMans stuff you can see when we removed the "PCV Cooler" from it... Rich and I to this day have both been extremely confused by that move. We've seen plenty of questionable stuff but that one was just odd

    10's of thousands of miles later when the owner gets some work done & the Mechanic tells the him "Hey I found your light under the car." as the owner responds "What light!?!" 😆

      It's without a doubt certain that there are more than a few cars on the highways and byways of the US with little magnetic lights hanging on for dear life long after their batteries quit. Just waiting there, to hopefully some day get recharged and put back to use again!

    Seeing that car makes me wish I still had my dad's 1970 LeSabre custom!

    How many of us Pontiac guys are going to mention to check the plate gap behind the water pump and the insert sleeves to the water pump housing.

      You are right on the money Sir! Actually something we dealt with on Kerry's 67 GTO over on his channel he had too big of a gap causing all kinds of havoc on his coolant flow.

    Olds Motor 403 . My Buddy back in the 80s had a 68 Goat drop top original 400 started rod knocking he put one of these motors in it with ported heads and a crower cam on spray car ran 12:11 at the track

    Why would a open thermostat cause it to overheat as coolant would be circulating all the time.

    ponchos are notorious for cracked heads and bad gaskets

      @LucoreAuto  11 місяців тому +1

      Unfortunately so. Also notorious for the little coolant gasket ring between the water pump and intake failing.
