    Episode 5: Carbon Masts for Kitefoiling - this ones for all the kite foilers or wannabe foilers, is it time to upgrade from that aluminium mast and go carbon? Rob's been testing the new F-one carbon mast for the past 6 months, after 3 years riding aluminium, and three big advantages have been coming blazingly clear to him - watch and find out why he is a convert! He also gives a quick round-up of some of the technical details of the new F-one carbon masts and compares them to the aluminium offerings.

    Kitesofaing is Progression's new web series, offering constructive techniques you can practice at home during the COVID-19 lockdown (though nothing to stop you carrying on when things go back to normal). The plan is for two videos each week:
    * The Weekend video will be focused on "doing", activities you can try and practice at home
    * The Mid-week video will cover a range of topics and focus more on better understanding through detailed theory briefings and question and answer sessions - submit your questions to Rob at kitesofaing@progression.me

    I experienced a whistle on the aluminum mast which went away on carbon. Not sure though if this had to do with a change of brands at the same time or if this in fact had to do with the material change.

      Carboin generally whistles less but definitely doesn't escape it completely. I've ridden plenty of aluminium setups that are silent and carbon setups that sing. It's a tough issue to fix, that is for sure.

    NEED HELP. I’m trying to figure out when I’m foiling and my board is perpendicular to the wind I will dive my kite and I will get pulled sideways off my board. Any tips...

    • @progressionsports
      @progressionsports  4 роки тому

      Hey Chris. If you are actually foiling (as it up riding on the foil, apposed to riding off the foil, board on the water) then I think you are flying the kite too much, and putting the kite too low. The vast majority of the time, once you are up on the foil, you shouldn't need to fly the kite, it should be parked anywhere from mid window to somewhere just off 12 (yes that high can be fine). If you feel you need more power then either you are on way to small a kite, but then I think you'd find it hard even water starting as novice foiler. The more likely reason is that you *think* you need more power, because that is what you are used to on a twintip/surfboard, when in fact on a foil you need very little power once foiling. You have to keep your weight over the board and foil (don't lean back) and trust that the parked kite will give you enough power to keep riding - keeping the kite higher in the window means you don't need to lean back so much cos the power is pulling a bit more upwards.

    Was there a difference in maximum speed between the aluminium and carbon masts?

    • @progressionsports
      @progressionsports  4 роки тому +1

      Not speed that I really notice, I'm on a 1000 Mirage wing so not the fastest wing but surprising quick for its size when you push it. The carbon mast goes give you better control at speed, particularly if you get any cavitation/venting of your wings. I find I have more direct control to push the wings back through the water until air reconnects with out crashing or touching down.

    One aspect you didn't cover about carbon is durability. I bought a carbon rig for my first foil, mast, fuselage. As a beginner, that maybe was not the smartest idea, since you may be hitting bottom (learned in shallow water in Hatteras and a tendency of beginners not to be too over their waists deep), losing the board, fumbling till you get the hang of it at the beach, or having it collide with the beach while coming back in. These aspects probably affect the mast less than the foil/fuselage, but it's a factor to consider - durability while you're learning. Thoughts?

    • @progressionsports
      @progressionsports  4 роки тому

      I do have an extra short clip regarding carbon masts for beginners. The weigh saving for beginners is worth it, as it does make moving it all around easier, but my feeling is the right foil, the right board and the right conditions play a bigger role. (Good instructional is vital too 😜). Durability wise, I think newer carbon products are being made with a more mainstream foiler in mind compared with previously their focus bein on performance, so carbon wings, mast etc all had thinner, sharper edges which were more delicate and to some degree dangerous. The performance foils still exist but there is a market for lightweight beginner/intermediate foils which are safer and more durable. At the end of the day if you foil somewhere like Hatteras you are gonna hit the bottom (I was there last year and it's impossible not too at some point) but most foiling locations the water is deep and you can avoid hitting things if you are just careful when launching and landing.

    Hey. This is great thank you. I’m thinking about making a dive into the foil game.
    I mainly thinking about getting it , to try wing surfing. Obviously the wings are expensive... my research is telling me that a 1800 wing is the way forward (I’m 70kg)... but on the basis you do it all (wing & kite foil) .... what’s the vibe on the mast length?! Is there one that will cover entry level to Wing Foil & Kite Foil ?! Or, do you need a shorter mast for the Wing & longer for the Kite?!
    Or is there a universal mast length that would work for entry level wing, kite foil & even surf SUP.
    I’ve gone seriously long into the F-one gear with kites.... so would love to hear about their masts . Please let me know would love to hear. 🤙

      Mast length is quite a personal choice but here are a few of the rules of thumb that i use as a starting point for people:
      - Smaller, lighter people can get away with shorter masts.
      - Tall, heavier people often need some extra length.
      I'm tall and 105kg and ride a 105cm on my kitefoil and 85cm on my wing.
      For your size, and it sounds like you don't currently foil at all, I'd suggest getting a a 65 or 75cm to start with. Start Aluminium and then its very cheap to just swap out the actually mast part and go longer when you want too. Once you've found the size that works for you, get it in carbon if you want to have a lighter setup.
      When we teach kitefoiling we start people on a 65cm, as it makes mistakes easier to survive. After one lesson some people can jump straight on to a longer others do best sticking with the shorter length for longer. For kite foiling its really all down to how good your kite skills are.
      A safe bet for something for everything, if you are a decent kiter and maybe have other windsports experience would be the 75cm.
      Hope that helps!

      And on the foil size for wingfoiling. The Gravity 1800 is a very popular size to start with, particularly if you are new to foiling in general. You will probably want a smaller foil once you improve and want to ride in stronger wings or start riding waves properly but having a larger wing definitely makes the first stages way way easier - don't be tempted to go too small of foil or board size to start with as it can easily hold you back.

      @@progressionsports - perfect. Thank you very much for your response. Currently in Cape Town waiting for the beaches to re-open. As soon as they do, I’ll be trying out a 1,800 wing with a 75cm mast and 4m Strike by F-one - can’t wait! Thanks again.

    Hi. Why do you use 85 cm mast, why not longer? I have the same board 130 cm mast 85 cm and 850 front wing. What will give me 1200cm front wing?

    • @progressionsports
      @progressionsports  2 роки тому

      I actually use a 105cm mast, but when i made this video I just happened to have the 85cm. 85cm is best for most kitefoilers, longer masts become better if you are racing or trying to push very hard through turns, needing to cant the board over further.

    What size front wing are you riding?

    • @progressionsports
      @progressionsports  4 роки тому +2

      I ride the Mirage 1000. I used to ride the 800 but I found the 1000 was close in speed but just gave me a little more leeway coming out of tacks to keep foiling, so far easier to learn new moves. I am also 105kg so that affects that choice too.

      Yeah on the whole. Though weight can make a big difference for some beginners who find moving the foil around in the water hard work.
