    No doubt that the F8x are way faster but the E9x sounds so much better and the steering is better. The fact that Nick felt sad trading in his E92 and doesn't miss his F82 speaks volumes.

    I'm on my second E92 and I've never had an issue with the electronics, throttle actuators, seat belt hander, or MPG. My 2008 had over 90k miles when I sold it and my 2013 has just over 50k now. Both were 6 speeds and both averaged 22-23mpg

    I recently picked up a new daily driver. I had the E92 M3 on my mind for 2 years. I finally got to drive one. I was pretty happy and everything. The one I was looking was a little beat up. I scared the sales man when I drove it lol. Anyway, I ended up test driving a 435xi right after and It shocked me. The 435 fit all the things i needed or wanted in my next daily. Fast forward to 3 weeks, I have slight buyers remorse. lol. That E92 M3 is a beast. Maybe if i sell my 1991 850, i will pick one up. But i do agree, this is the last true M car. I test drove a slightly modded M4, and it shocked me a lot, but i still preferred the E92 M3 compared to the M4.

    • @buzzyinurface
      @buzzyinurface 6 років тому

      So the 435 is a great car. Did you get an automatic? If you did and it’s not a Sport Auto trans you can program it and it will shift hard and fast almost like a DCT. Also the N55 is one of the best sounding engines BMW has ever made, especially with no cats

    I have the 2010 M3 Cpe, and while I understand your gripes, I haven't experienced them with mine. What I did experience recently was strange noises coming from the rear, almost like the tires were rubbing. My dealer correctly diagnosed it as the LSD needed cleaning (flushing out) and refilling. Apparently a common issue. I am 6'5" and do not find the seating position an issue. While 18 MPG does seem poor (and 8MPG at the track!!), it was a refreshingly good change from my previous V10 M5 which was returning 13 MPG even on trips back and forth to work!! The electronics have not been an issue; the tech is even more modern after 7 years than my 2015 Porsche Macan Turbo; the DCT isn't an issue (mine is a manual - I like your back seat passenger's comment); 36K miles, so no throttle actuator issues (yet!); there is reasonable storage under the center armrest; and finally your STEATBELT hander??? Mine has a SEATBELT hander, which most people find elegant, amusing and gentlemanly, often saying "Thank You" to it!! Still I do agree with your positive comments, and even think the best feature (certainly over more recent M's) is the handling and steering. I take my car to the track and while that is amazing, I rarely get out of the car after a "normal" drive on So Cal roads without a smile on my face. The true test of a sports car!

    Hi Nick - love your videos! I have a 2013 E92 M3 MT6 with almost no options (ie-no iDrive). I picked it up in Munich in 3/2013, near the end of its production run. I planned to keep it for 3-4 yrs then trade it in on a 991.2 but couldn't because I enjoy it so much. I don't drive it often--I have about 10k miles on it--but I now I plan to keep it forever. The engine is wonderful to listen to, and the analog feel of the car is not something any modern car has. I think it's like a 1970 Hemi Cuda: supremely stupid, and absolutely sublime. In their GBU section, CAR magazine used the words, "prodigious thirst" to describe it. Like you, I don't disagree.... Thanks for highlighting it in this video. (BTW-I'm getting an F80 com pak M3 MT6 this sept,SC delivery instead of a 911. I like the idea of having two M3s that are so completely different.)

    That 6th aggressiveness step is what enables Launch Control. You need to have warmed up the car, then stop somewhere flat, let off the brake, hold the shifting knob forward until a race flag appears in the center console, then press the gas pedal hard, it will spool up to ~5k rpm, then let go of the shifter you were holding forward. The car launches and you just need to press the gas pedal, it changes gears FOR you at redline, until you stop holding the gas pedal or press the brakes.

    Nice review Nick, I had an e92 M3 for 3 years before moving into a 991.2S. It's funny that it seems like a natural path for a lot of car enthusiasts. The BMW was a beautiful and practical car and I still love the styling, however it's just so heavy and slow. The sound is definitely the most attractive aspects of this car for sure - I had the ACM mod done and it sounded just killer. The fact is that porsche 991 platform is so significantly better that I just don't miss mine at all.

    This car needs the GTS DCT flash. It quickens the shift and puts the car into auto mode (D2) instead of manual mode first. Really transforms the way the car behaves daily. Well worth the hundred bucks or so for the upgrade! It's an absolute must for all the DCT E9X M3's!

    Pretty much spot on Nick. I'd add the rod bearings. I replaced mine last August just to make sure and they were looking worn, something that shouldn't be happening and could lead to total engine failure. We are also affected by the defective Takata airbags and BMW has yet to produce enough to replace them all. I'm sitting in front of a grenade essentially. Other than that, I really love my E90. It's been really hard to find a reason to let it go and get into something newer. Wasn't a fan of the F8x's and I think there's more to that M2 than what they released. Hopefully the M2 CS is real and wouldn't mind getting into that, but it'll still be a sad day to give up the M3.

    Nick,
    We're twins. I also had a 2008 M3 (even trade for gen.1 997) in manual. Had it to 147 mph on test drive until salesman got nervous. Agree with your likes/dislikes list. Ultimately I wanted another 911(991.1) and traded it in after 4 years. My top dislikes were the manual gearbox, MPG otherwise it was a blast and one of the most comfy sports cars I've had.

    I've had an e92 m3 for 6 years, put 70000 miles on it so far. Doesn't begin in S mode start; no bulbs gone ; no throttle actuator fail; 23-24 mpg combined cycle , so given US speed limits, you must be thrashing yours off the mark every chance you get if you're only getting 18mpg in a country with a 55mph speed limit (i tend do hit the Uk motorways at 80-90...does US gas burn dirtier maybe?). And no rod bearing issues. Agree on the seatbelt hander though...need to try your ironing trick!

      And normally cruise 100+ which eats fuel and we only have 97 octane gas here

    • @e1368633
      @e1368633 7 років тому

      55 is far from the highest speed limit in the U.S, most are 70 and a few 80 mph. It's only 55 around a populated areas. Further, we do not respect the speed limits as much over here. The penalties aren't as harsh, people drive more aggressively in general, we are legally allowed to use countermeasures such as laser jammers/ radar detectors, speed cameras are illegal in most states and getting a license to begin with is very easy. I got clocked at 98 in a 70 and it was a $260 fine, in many parts of Europe that would be bigger fine, and probably a suspended license along with it. I cruise at 90+ everyday on the Jersey Turnpike and I'm never the fastest car, I always get passed by someone going 100+.

    Initial impressions after owning E92 for 3 weeks and 700 miles, city to country and a some tight twisty steep tiny roads in the hills--it's natural habitat. Fortunately for me today I happened to pass the only Highway Patrol whilst doing less than 70 in a 65, gotta install that radar detector...I had been a "bit" over that just prior, sheesh this is as bad as that fast street bike I rode daily for 15 yr.s, get's you into trouble all by itself. :D
    Nitpicking and 'would like to haves':
    1) a taller top gear in the manual, better yet a seven speed so that I can cruise the hwy at closer to 2500 rpm instead of 3500 at 80 mph when you don't need power, to save engine wear and fuel,
    2) the previous style turn signal control like my E46 where you can FEEL with your fingers whether the signal is on or not, at hyw speeds you can't hear the blinker and the steering wheel blocks exactly that part of the display for me with the E92, and the signal stalk always returns to center so you don't have that crucial tactile check/feedback! As it stands I have to pay extra attention to use it properly and not leave it on accidentally.
    3) DSC is still too abrupt and intrusive in the middle setting, not a big deal since you can simply turn it off and that's where the fun really is, then you realize how great it can be and the limited slip diff (I know it's expected) comes into play, I always hated at lower speeds that my Dinan 330ci doesn't have limited slip diff,
    4) the throttle pedal spring is too weak for my size 15 feet, a common problem for me and maybe not you, it's no problem during "dynamic" driving where your on and off all three pedals fast and constantly, everything from clutch to brakes feels very good, proficient and predictable, but between hard driving and cruise control my ankle can fatigue from holding my foot OFF the loud pedal (high quality 1st world problem, right!? lol)
    5) Old issue but I still miss a darn DIPSTICK, hello BMW! I like to look at and feel the oil between my finger tips as much as I also like the sensors and dash readout, I can't be the only one.
    6) the steering wheel position still doesn't have enough travel!
    7) Again, maybe not a problem for many as I have XXL paws, or maybe the way I place my hand on the stick, but I keep inadvertently hitting the buttons in front of the stick shift, I only notice when the rear window shade comes up unintentionally, I will have to come up with some sort of thin flip down cover for that row of buttons or change the way I grip the knob.
    *8) this could be the most important 'issue' here, the steering radius is not near as tight as I would like, not even close to that of the E46, this could be serious not so much for low speed maneuverability, U-turns and such, but because there are times when I use every degree of steer, to the lock, when getting a little too sideways in a corner, particularly in the rain, less steer angle could result in an unintentional 180 which is never a good thing. I think I have completely spun out my 330 3 times in 15 yr.s, driver error obviously but we are always looking for MORE capability not less, and the E92 has significantly LESS than the E46 in this respect.*
    9) the backup lights are sort of a joke, I may see if I can do something about that, at least it has the backup sensors to help keep you from bumping into something.
    One excellent thing about the E92 that does not get enough attention is the throttle response with those fat throttle bodies slammed right against the cylinders, it doesn't get any better in that respect...also similar to those overhead cam multi-valve Japanese street bikes of my youth, 'instant' throttle response is crucial at the limits of traction, more so for a bike but still critical for the car sometimes. *I sought this particular M3 for the engine and it does not disappoint, a gem someone said and it IS.*
    The manual trans is much better feeling than I was led to believe, can be shifted very smoothly with confidence you know exactly where it is...in or between gears or in the syncro, it is very clear and positive, far better than my E46 for sure but that's the worst part of that particular E46 driver experience. Maybe not the slickest feeling manual this novice has ever experienced, but close. One 2003 M5 6-speed was maybe the very best feeling trans I have ever driven but there are plenty of cars I have no experience with. The E92 does have a long throw for this type of car but I sort of like it that way, It's a "higher resolution" feel, no it's not quite as quick if you are racing I suppose but I'm not one to slam threw gears anyway....having overhauled a couple manuals in my life maybe I'm extra sensitive to exactly what's going on when you force a syncro say.
    A lot of folks reviewing this car have complained about how long it takes to warm up and attributed that to the 10W-60 oil, that can't be the reason as heat capacities of all motor oils are very similar (few exceptions such as the high zinc oil for the air cooled Porsche perhaps), don't think it's going to change via going to a lower viscosity oil. The fact that it sports 9 quarts capacity is at least part of why it warms slow, not the TYPE of oil.

    There is a simple fix for the seatbelt problem. BMW has provided a plastic piece, that goes onto seatbelt rod at the floor, which forces the bottom of the seatbelt to be more forward, which in turn makes the seatblet actuator work more reliably. Check with your BMW dealer.

    Totally agree about the E92 M3 - it's the last M car with a true motorsport engine with a great racing career. BMW doesn't even try to race the current M4 in IMSA. I had an E46 M3 for five years before this one, and I while I had a ton of upgrades done to it, it was never as good as an E92.

    If you love driving and are thinking about getting an E92 M3, take my advice... DO IT. Get the manual transmission. Blip every downshift. Oversteer at every opportunity. Forget torque. Love the throttle response, the power delivery and the sound at 8400rpm and you soon realise that "real world performance" is totally boring.

    • @bipolarsounds
      @bipolarsounds 7 років тому

      As for the negatives... the throttle actuator fix is nowhere near that expensive - just find an independent specialist. Research how few engines have actually encountered rod bearing issues and it won't keep you awake at night. I had my M3 for 3 years, the only real problem I had was working out how to ever replace it.

    I do like these. but I don't think they'll appreciate a ton. Mustangs(well all modern muscles cars really) offer more performance for similar prices with less maintenance. Yes, they're obviously different demographics, but the experience is much more similar than you'd think. glorious v8 with a manual and a comfortable but sporty ride...food for thought.

    Great video, Nick. One thing, though. The e92 is a coupe, not a sedan or saloon. Along with being the last ever V8, the last ever naturally aspirated M3, etc., the e92 is the last ever 2-door/coupe M3. The e90 is the 4-door sedan/saloon. But of course we have another four-door M3 sedan/saloon with the f80. Thanks for the video. I think the 6MT strippers will be in highest demand as time passes, especially low-mile, non-modified examples.

      in some geographic areas his nomenclature is correct; since it is a 2 door version of the 4 door it is still considered a 2 door sedan. I find this is the case especially in Europe and APAC.

I have the same wheel on my Porsche and I've been disappointed with it. I can't seem to find a comfortable hand position. What makes the Porsche wheel even worse is that my other car is a mk7 GTI which has one of the best steering wheels of any car I've owned or driven.

    If you're a manual expert and enjoy shifting I suppose the 6 speed is relevant. Otherwise, the DCT is optimal.

      Rod bearings are mith....not true, just some fails in 2007-2009 models, they built 70.000, but they replace in 2010 for durable ones, but bmw said people just don't put correct 10W60 oil on it.

      Which is not really a launch control. It is more a clutch dump mode (loads and loads of wheelspin). I'm quicker off the line in my E92 M3 just flooring it in normal mode.

    • @Thewinnerscircle_
      @Thewinnerscircle_ 7 років тому

      replica00000 well if you have a decent set of tires on your car, maybe you wouldn't get wheel spin lol I only spun if my tires were cold or bald and I know for a fact, the car will beat any time done without launch control. It also limits wheel spin when it takes off so maybe take a look at your diff to make sure it's not done

    I think the reason why you had small issues is bc your was a 2008 first year. Never a good idea to buy first year car esp German and euros. The GTS tune greatly improves the DCT transmission. But yes I agree it should be better from stock but I'm never selling my e90 M3. You can also "code" out the arms to come out. Don't miss the arms in my e92 335i. Glad I went with the e90 LCi. There's also a better fix for throttle actuators. Even if you replace them they will fail in 50k again. The reason they fail is bc the shaft for the individual throttle body gets dirty so the throttle actuators need to work harder and eventually the gears strip. So if you clean the shaft. It will never fail. Just a heads up.
