I don't agree with this logic much, because imagine if Nintendo didn't have anything prepared for 3DS in 2017 and the Switch flopped. They don't decide in advance when the life cycle exactly ends, only estimate. So it's not like the should halt (or rush) all projects for a system just because a new one is coming out soon.
