Why I Build Robots Without Wheels

  • Shea Waffles Johns built Big Cookie and is the driver of Depth Charge, both robots are unique in that they have no wheels and move by the vibration of bristles attached to the underside. It's very difficult to control, but that's just how Shea likes it.
    In the latest episode of This Is Havoc, find out why she says No to wheels and prefers the seemingly impossible to control bristle drive instead through her new robot Big Ccookie.

    Good concept, a little lackluster in the mechanical side but it's a first year robot.
    The minibot was really a great team player, ample speed and great driving!
    Perhaps the uneven bristles made the main bot dip too much at high rotation of the main weapon?
    I understand that they want some dipping, but perhaps they got more than they bargained for?
    The two stops in the last 2 fights, was that a mechanical failure of the gearbox they mentioned wasn't made for their possible rotational speeds?
    Good efforts nonetheless, great showing getting into round 2 in their first year!

    • @lucidahand7975
      @lucidahand7975 Рік тому +6

      The minibot is definitely the MVP! The main issue was that there was too much space between the baseplate and the inner shell, so the shell could wobble too much with that clearance. The second fight, since the driving pulley is the highest point in the internals, when the shell rocked in that big hit and kept spinning, the top of the shell knocked into the pulley hard enough to break the shaft going through the right angle gearbox. The gearbox surprisingly held up great!
      The solution to that problem is rub blocks along the baseplate for the future, so the shell can't tilt so much. We've also since revised the driving pulley attachment method so that it's not as close to the shell lid.
      In the rumble, the issue was from the weapon pulley! The main shaft is a big bolt, locked in place with two nuts. The threading on the bolt was just a little too long, and Cookie spins in the tightening direction. This is great for making sure the weapon pulley doesn't fly off, but the nuts tightened enough in that hit to lock the whole thing up. Everything else was fine after that, so we got a longer bolt for the future and adjusted the spacing to those nuts. There was some smoke in the rumble, but it was from the belts burning up as they tried to spin the locked up weapon pulley.

      I can only imagine how much you're kept on your toes in that position, not to mention all the possible and impossible things that can happen in a fight or a full series!
      I've done some project work and management in a different field, so I know how it can throw you a curve ball from your blind side.
      I would love to "pick your brains" with someone on the specifics of robot combat management, but an open UA-cam chat isn't the time or place.
      They say "break a leg" when wishing all the best in the theaters, but I haven't learned the equivalent proverb for robot fighting.

    Didn't loss of controlled locomotion used to be the condition for a loss? Since when did that change? A bot getting to the state this bot starts at used to mean you've lost. If you're weak as a pilot, there's a reason this is teams and not just 1 individual. If you wanna take part in an uncontrolled bot competition, that's a thing, it's just not as dynamic, because the pilots can't change the course of the battle through their skills

    I like the concept, but the lack of steerabiility ruins it for me. You can just adhoc a gyroscopic steering build that depends on vibration to get moving. You have to do a lot of math and program a conteoller to pulse slowdowns and speedup to steer this thing. There is no way a human can manually do this.
    Battle bots need to start the first round with a control testing course. To disqualify robots that can't be controlled with intention.

    • @tomykong2915
      @tomykong2915 Місяць тому

      At one point, a loss was declared once that control was lost, so under the original rules of these guys at least, this bot started the round in a loss state already, meaning they'd need to somehow end the fight before the 10 second countdown that started immediately was up.
      and I am with you on this, this kind of bot is what you're looking for in unmanned bot competitions, it's antithetical to this style of matches intentionally. The main reason for manned bot competitions is the dynamics that comes from the pilot being able to shift the battle's direction with their skills, but that's not present with this bot, because the pilot isn't a good pilot and because they're also one of the builders, they just deleted the chance to offload that role to someone who can pilot, as most of these teams do, because that's part of why this is a team competition

      @tomykong2915 Місяць тому

      @@TeamSmallRobotsshe explains how it moves and how she has very limited control intentionally, because she sucks at piloting, so she just sets the bot up to not need piloting and instead just let her button mash essentially in hopes it works out fine, which means it is already in the 10 second countdown to loss immediately upon starting the match and should be losing every match as a result, if they didn't decide to make an exception and allow an unmanned bot in this manned bot competition, when her skills would fit perfectly in an unmanned competition, though those don't get as much attention, because those bots function like hers, not able to be substantially influenced by a human's moment to moment judgments during the battle, resulting in less dynamic and interesting fights

    I don't think this honors the nature of the competition being a sport, being able to drive and control your robot is as much a part of competing as making the robot, her robot is so slow and uncontrollable that she stands no reasonable chance of catching her opponent, instead the onus is entirely on her opponent to either drive into her bot or literally sit there motionless for a minute while her robot slowly approaches. If not disqualified she should be cheesed out of any chance of winning by opponents using light flails, these flails will have no chance of doing any actual damage but a hit is still a hit and if they hit her bot without ever letting her retaliate (because again the onus is on them to let her hit them) then she loses by default, as she should.
