- Czech Airlines carried out a charter flight with an ATR 72-500 to Bern Airport in Switzerland. The ATR 72 is a twin-engine turboprop regional airliner powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127F engines, each driving a six-bladed propeller.

nice... hi just curious. noticed that these ATRs are very noisy "sharp sound" whenever we are about to board the plane.. any what cause this sound?
It's a "Hotel mode" which is a feature on ATR 42/72 turboprops replacing an APU (auxiliary power unit) by locking the right-hand #2 engine (PW100) with a 'propeller brake' while allowing the turbine, and therefore also the generator, to run, providing electrical power and bleed air. It's indeed incredibly loud and thats only when you are standing on the other side of the aircraft while boarding. You can't really stand on the other side of the plane without some sort of ear protection.
These are turboprop planes, so essentially there is a jet engine powering the propeller. Now ATRs do not have APU to provide ground power, instead right hand engine may be place into "Hotel mode" which means that the jet part of the engine is swtiched on to provide ground power, however propeller is not rotating. So that sharp sound might be sound of engie in Hotel mode.
