      This was really cool. I certainly think there are some other games/game developers that are trying to do similar things and thinking along the same wavelengths. One game that is focused on lower fidelity and single player only is called Tiny Combat Arena, it's in early access but a lot of fun. Another game that I haven't played but is making waves on big youtube channels and with streamers is BattleBit Remastered. I think it's fair to say that a lot of gamers aren't really concerned with graphics as long as the core game mechanics are solid. I bet if someone made a new, low-poly WWII Online it would be a hit.

      Hey enigma, finally got thru the whole interview. Well done and very good points. So I just wanted to remind you about ED’s upcoming title Modern Air Combat, which we haven’t heard much about lately. I think this will offer the type of gameplay similar to GHPC except with the PVP you’re looking for. Since you kind of have an “in” now with ED, maybe you can follow up on it and see where they are. I’m a high fidelity flyer but it would be interesting to know more about the MAC project.

      What they say about balance is reason why TankCrew from Il-2 GB is so bad, they make Tigers and T-34s, but game cant handle hords of T-34s, so you end up have to fight 1v1, yes tiger was there and t-34 was there, and they are modeled to best posible to data that exist, but without historical context of why one side gamble on small number of high tech tanks vs other on mass, its all pointless, and tank part of game is now big failure, they have nice textures, cockpits, physics and so on... but no real combat posibilitys for MP tanks. You have to have ability for side that used mass to have that, player spawn with AI tanks under his controll and so on...

This was a highly in-depth and interesting interview, and I don't think it would have been as engaging if it was done by someone with less of a gift for analogies and practical examples :) Hopefully you'll do another GHPC interview in the future when there's new stuff to talk about!

      The creators have so far achieved me to get feeling nostalgia from my personal experiences with early 90s ”M1 Tank Platoon”, and first version of Steel Beast!
      Now I’ll have to get myself a job so I can get a better machine to get this simulator game…

      You may have seen them already, but your point about players complaining about the lack of superficial "physics" (tread ruts, etc.) despite the intense ballistics model reminded me a lot of the many GDC talks about building AI. Countless developers have tried implementing really clever and interesting AI that do stuff like distract the player while other agents flank around through side-corridors, only to be met by players complaining about AI "teleporting" behind them and such. You see the same thing in Arma, where a large percentage of the playerbase bitches about the enemy AI being omniscient and outrageously deadly when in reality they're extremely mediocre compared to a human player, and actually have their sensory and knowledge capabilities limited and modeled in very interesting and deep ways (anything but omniscient). You have to be very careful about what sort of AI experience you want players to have, since it seems most people aren't tolerant of facing AI that is near-peer in terms of intelligence or effectiveness.

      @@theDemong0d I had first-hand experience of this back in my Arma2 days when I ran a server for our 'clan'. I installed ZeusAI as I found the vanilla AI were being too predictable in how they'd react to our incursions. Long story short, nearly everyone lost their sh*t and began whinging that the AI were now "cheating" and overpowered. Eventually I had to dial back their engagement distances and reaction time to the point where I had to effectively castrate them. I ended up just uninstalling it because by the time everyone was happy the AI were less effective than prior to the Mod being installed.
      Meanwhile a small group of us (around 5) actually really enjoyed facing off against an opponent that could actually kill you if it spotted you first.

      Same here. I play a couple of GHPC missions roughly daily as I have high hopes for GHPC.
      I find the snail loses my immersion as it gets more modern. As the tactics IRL changed from fairly discrete into full combined arms, WT feels a lot more arcade-y to me as the game play drifts further from what would be reasonable IRL. I’m also more interested in the vehicles and tactics than I am in the fake economy and grinding and as the grind gets grind-y-er the higher the BR, I don’t enjoy it as much.

    One of my favourite tank game experiences wasn't in Warthunder, but in Hell Let Loose. You have 3 players all working together to man this machine of war which takes a lot of coordination and skill, and when you have a crew that works well together, even just manoeuvring ourselves around the battlefield to area's the Tank Commander feels is best suited becomes a fun task.
    Furthermore, add in the that the reality that in that setting and context, we're fighting period correct enemies with period correct allies, and fighting contextually appropriately. Hold key points and being a mobile bunker in a defensive line. We are supporting an allied infantry advance - assisting to break through enemy entrenchments. We are engaging enemy infantry targets. We are shelling defences with HE shells. HE shells being actually effective if not the priority towards hard targets and infantry is surprisingly fun.
    In the GHPC line, I see that the dev's are adding infantry eventually. It is my hope and dream that the dev's allow me to get a taste of the beloved HLL experience in both a singleplayer and multiplayer setting. It's only once in a blue moon I get to taste the HLL one, as that game is primarily 95% of the time a infantry focused tactical shooter. So I'm looking for it elsewhere in a dedicated tank game.

    I like they've chosen Cold War timeframe when battlefield was far more symmetrical, most parameters are declassified, it can be made ina realistic way. And it's atmospheric with Fulda Gap clash.
    Waiting for infantry to make battlefield full and more realistic.

    I grew up on Microprose games like M1 Tank Platoon, so I appreciate someone reviving the "sim-lite" genre. It's good to have the option of simulation gameplay without simulation tedium.

    Great video, as always, Enigma. I'm still watching this video, half-way trhough. Interesting formating bringing the DEVs hahaha. So, after all the comments and now getting in contact with game creators, I don't think we are in a dark age of sim games. When I was a kid I always imagined how sim games could look in the future and despite not having much games like in the past, the ones we have are so good lookking and becoming even deeper in complexity. We may be living a quality over quantity sim games today, not exactly a dark age.

    Always neat to see these sorts of crossovers.
    I think there is hope for sims, but it is interesting to me that some of the more "revolutionary" stuff seems to be very focused, independent projects like GHPCm, Hunternet Starfighter, or mods that are more like full games (such as BMS).

    I did the War Thunder grind for awhile and it pushed me to DCS. I already had LOMAC from 2004 and it was great to find it was still alive in DCS. I am very afraid there's not the market for sims to support what would truly bring back the golden age of gaming... but I'm pulling for DCS because that's what I've invested so much in at this point.

      M1 Tank Platoon II has my favorite graphic aesthetic. I'd take that over hyper-realistic any day if it meant other parts of the game could be improved instead.

    Really enjoy the content on this channel.
    GHPC is hot. To sum up its strongest feature in a word, "REALISM'"! Very realistic vehicles. Gun/armor model, fire control systems, track/suspension, ect... To the point about interior eye candy, efforts would be better spent on adding/improving player/tank interactions with the game world. collision models with map objects, terrain deformation, infantry ect...
    BTW, the new terrain effects seen through the gun sight when a shell lands near-by are moving things in exactly the right direction.
    Enigma89, no specific part really, just enjoyed the interview in general.

    To me "cold war" is basically the 1989 cold war gone hot scenario.
    Fox 1 air combat between 3rd and 4th gen planes.
    I really just want to see a game that combines the best of CMO, Arma, BMS, DCS, in a single persistent online war server.

      That all sounds great in theory, but in practice its just not possible with current tech. Plus, if you were an infantry squad driving to the front in a truck and got blown up by a long range missile strike you couldn't even see that's really not a lot of fun.

    It's interesting to hear in the beginning of the Scale vs Fidelity chapter how the team hints on WHY there may be a sim games dark age. From pure gamer's perspective, it's very hard to understand how the workflow and workload of a dev has changed over the past decade or two.

    I think people who make sport games got it right. If it's a driving game it's literally about driving. If a car has manual transmission you often still press gear up button on the wheel. Sometimes there is a clutch. If you are into immersion you buy a shifting stick but it's purely optional.

    I'm so old. I started sim gaming in 1984 with F-15E Strike Eagle on the C64 . GHPC has been wonderful . I hope the gameplay becomes as good as M1 Tank Platoon.

    It may not be your usual type of game, but based on your interests I *highly* suggest you check out Mount & Blade: Warband. M&B is literally the only other game I can think of that has a BMS-level dynamic campaign, it's an important (if unexpected) pillar in the history of sim games and an essential play if you're into this kind of stuff. It's like medieval Arma 2 meets a BMS-level dynamic campaign.

    I love the frank discussion and clear passion and direction they have for their project. Loving the shit out of the game but can't wait til it gets the fleshed out campaign they envision.
    Loved the discussion about capturing the essence of vehicles even if they are at a reduced fidelity, something I feel GHPC and Flaming Cliffs (totally agree with you, one of my favorites as well). And the idea/discussion about combat ecosystems and incentives. I think and hope ED is hard at work trying to get that sorted for their campaign system and looking forward to see what GHPC does.
    But since you asked what our favorite part of the interview is, it is when you compared the Hornet cockpit to an Apple store laugh 😂😂😂 🐝 🍏

    1:21:32 In defense of having the cockpit, it's not just because of the immersion, it's also about simulating the human machine interface.
    The HMI doesn't really matter when you're trying to model the functional but it does matter when it comes to performance.

    World War Two Online ruined me as a gamer because now I have a hard time enjoying 'single serving' games like Squad, Hell Let Loose, etc. World War Two Online had so much purpose and depth. Your actions had global effects.

    I would love to see ED limit those popular modules in the sense of providing a way to restrict Hornets and Vipers to the A model features. Take away datalink and HMCS and it would help. But still, not much fun running Mig 21 against Hornet or Viper.

    Warthunder is not a SIM at all! its a vehicle simulator it does not simulate warfare at all. It does "try" to how ever you get punished in the grind if you try to play for the objective making the grind so much slower, it forces people to only play a single play style and turn the game into a Cod lobby or CSGO lobby. The only redeeming game mode they have is the Simulator battles but between it being not meta for grinding and its low player count most people wont touch it and it gets under used leave most who do want to play left with extreme wait times or unable to play their preferred time period.

    I’m loving their philosophy for MP. Yes, K/D, points etc are fun but they do feel a little childish after you get further into adulthood. What interest sme is tactics, teamwork and achieving something in combination with other people. I’ve not been on the Enigma Cold War Server because I’ve been waiting on an eye operation. When I ‘fly’ DCS, I currently need labels, or dots at the minimum. However, I’ve had one eye done so I might mosey over today or tomorrow to check it out. Ok, having one eye working properly is still a disadvantage but I understand there’s a lot of co-op stuff to do on the CWS so maybe I should get my feet under the table early :D. I have most vehicles in War Thunder but the equivalent of ‘MFD blindness’ means that before my eyes fucked up, I mostly played WW2 and Cold War stuff before the missile thunder starts. I’m also not into the whole fake economy thing. I’d be Ok with having to research vehicles but researching modules just leaves me cold. I can mostly ignore this below about 7.0 as I just need a game or three to spade something but higher up it’s just frustrating. And I’ve made a choice to not spend any money on WT after some dodgy z-fascist info about, firstly, Bruce, and then also a dev or two. Any money I spend that goes to anyone in Russia means tax revenue for the Kremlin. I’m hoping this doesn’t apply to DCS as much but at the moment I’m sticking my fingers in my ears about it as I have seen no reports of anyone involved with ED being a z-fascist. Anyway, GHPC is fantastic already and gets better with every update. I had to change my M1 play style when the thermals became more realistic but I approve completely of making the experience realistic. I’m also ok with not every little internal widget being simulated. Yea, this would theoretically make the game more ‘real’ but there’s a balance in my mind. We don’t have 2-3 other people in the tank with us, we don’t sit in the tank all day every day and if we did, all those widgets would just fade into the background. I love that the important stuff is simulated and the less important is abstracted. It’s different in an aircraft as your team stays on the ground. In a tank they are with you.

    This is potentially exciting. Since IL2 Tank Crew came out, I have flown but a handful of times. I'm really into tank sims and have most of them. I loved Steel Beasts, but the graphics are somewhat of let down. I purchased GHP when it was still in development and will continue to support sims of this nature.
    I disagree that PvP is overrated. I think it makes matches all the more interesting due to the unpredictable way human players react to given situations. With that said, I agree that sims shouldn't be "dumb-down" to make a balance PvP environment. There should be a mission editor to create "balanced' PvP missions.
    My next suggestion or question is, "Will there be the ability for owners of GHP to create their own skins and share their creations?"
    Final question, I know GHP focuses on the "cold war" tanks, but will there be in the future the possibility of WW2 AFV? Or the addition of more modern tanks? e.g. Leopard, Challenger, Merkava, etc.
    I apologize if these questions were answered in the interview as I didn't watch the video since I'm at work :)

    Just watched the whole 1 hour and 44 minutes of it, for some reason. I tend to steer away from steam early access, but after hearing the developer thoughts and craving a proper tank simulator, I just bought and installed GHPC.

    are all these APC's empty or do they carry tiny bitmap troops that exit the vehicles and try to kill you with rocketlaunchers like in M1 Platoon 2?

    I haven’t fully watched the video yet. But I hope they improve the ai, got entire squads on mh side under my control die because they either turn around or aim behind them, or really just show side armor to enemy’s that I’m engaging. Like I told you side by side and I am engaging enemies, why do they expose themselves just to get smacked in the back

    For Tank game in coop or MP you need to have ability for player to select how many AI tanks will spawn with him, will he have for example 1 or 21 tanks, that he can comand, and when hes destroyed, he can then switch to tank in his spawn group that is alive. Webstat then need to be build to track that correctly, and then see that event of switch, and make it as its new sortie of player. So then i as player dont have to waist time going from spawn to action again, as i can just respawn in alive tank in my group until all are destroyed, and you can have that one side can outnumber onother side if it was historicly like that , even if there is small number of players is on server. It have to be server option, to alow this respawn in AI tank in your group, and mission maker can on spawn points for type of tank define how many can player spawn with him and so on... as server gets populated spawn AI with human number gets lowered...

    add more tanks and matbe some modern tanks like leo 2a6 or M1A2, make campaingm more compliacated more strategic, and improve AI

      there planning to improv A.I
      also leo 2a6 and m1a2 at not cold war era so unless they add a Theatre that takes place in 2001 or 1992 they will not be coming

      clearly you did not wacth the video or all of it
      the devs don't care about making a game that can rival war thunder or be more popular then it
      anything related to war thunder is something the devs likely don't care about as it his nothing to do with why they are making GHPC

    PVP is overrated and usually ruins games because developers begin to focus so much more on balance than fun or realism. (War isn't balanced, big shocker). I hope they keep kicking the can on PVP.
