Hi Rick, Thank you for bringing us the delights of vintage film modernised to a super standard with great commentary,I can after watching tutorials on film restoration appreciate how much time and effort goes into each upload, watching them is highly addictive, its like momentarily time travelling and taking in the history and ambience of the time that the film was taken, through both the eyes of the person who took it and indeed the vision of the restorer bringing life, depth, clarity, speed, colour, music and dialogue. Best wishes to yourself, family, friends and fellow folk.
I came across this film accidentally and was absolutely amazed. This is one of the most incredible films I've ever seen. I have watched it at least a dozen times and find it so absorbing I feel like I am there on that boat going back in time. I went with my parents in 1954 to see my uncle off to Europe on the S.S. United States at the United States Line pier and got to go on the ship and see it when it was only 2 years old. I was 6 at the time and I still remember it well. I can not begin to express the memories this film brings back to me. Again this is really incredible, amazing, and almost unbelievable. Thank you for sharing this with us all.
Thank you for all your efforts Rick, and don’t forget the original cameraman that filmed ordinary sceneries that would become out of the ordinary for us today. I would love to see the same boattrip filmed in 2022 eddited and synchronized to a split screen movie. Displaying the old and new film would surely be a masterpiece and a time capsule for 87 years from now.
I would love to make a side-by-side "Then and Now" film, but I live in The Netherlands. If someone would be willing to host such a long boat trip (free of charge and not on a too small wobbly boat) we'd love to fly to New York to make such a film. Filming in HD/4K is one of my hobbies too!
i had a family member who became an american in 1922. he lived in the seamen hotel and was a sailor. also in the street of moonstruck, the movie with cher.
Amazing. I wish more people could see what a beautiful city NYC once was. My grandparents grew up there. Rick, My grandmother is 91 and I have shown her some of your other NY videos and she remembers some of the places shown. Thank you very much!
3:40 Starrett-Lehigh Building, 1931 (still there) 5:50 National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) building (still there) 8:33 Left: Whitehall Building, 17 Battery Place plus annex (with arched roof), behind that the Downtown Athletic Club and behind that 21 West Street (all still there)
Had zo in New York kunnen staan. En de Nationale koekjesfabriek. Geweldig, dankjewel Rick! Ik ben nooit in NY geweest, nu dus wel even....
Graag gedaan!
Incredible work Rick and what a city she was and is. That skyline would be far and away the best on the planet today never-mind then. So many stunning architectural gems. It's a shame so many of those beautiful buildings are now obscured or were demolished. Either way, thank you for this beautiful and important film.
I have watched many of them! But this one of the trip around the Hudson and East River in 1930’s New York I particularly liked. I think your narration and the information you added just made this one particularly enjoyable! 😊 Thanks again.
Thank you, Rick88888888!! I just love all the beautiful videos you’ve restored!! And adding your narrations have made these beautiful videos even more spectacular!! Thanks again and keep up the wonderful work!! ❤️❤️🙏🏼❤️❤️
At the 11:30 mark, we have the Manhattan Bridge in the foreground and the Brooklyn Bridge in the background. Dead center of the bridges is a whitish, stocky, pyramidical building which I believe is the 120 Wall Street Building (1930). I believe the first tall building to the right of that, the one with the distinct vertical lines, is the Citi Bank and Farmers Trust Building (1932). The tall building to the immediate right of the Citi Bank Building I believe is the Cities Services Building (1932). And the next tall building to the right of the Cities building I believe is the Bank of Manhattan Building (1930).
Thank you. I was going to offer my own comment to point out the error but decided to read through the comments first, to see if it had not been already pointed out. Also, Rick, the 59th Street Bridge connects Manhattan to Queens, not to Long Island, even though it's a section of Queens known as "Long Island City" it's not to be mistaken with that part of the island that actually IS "Long Island."
I see this period of development as a sort of cross over.. Yes there was technology in industry and machines to do work more efficiently that ever.. but it was still man power that kept the nations moving. There was no internet, personal mobile phones, no WiFi for people to display their entire lives on.. Faces looking down at their faces constantly. Or had headphones so as not to talk to people…. Our tech is indeed impressive, but a very large part of me wishes I had lived back then - Amazing images
I have only just discovered your excellent site and have subscribed. Your hard work in restoring and colourising these period films is greatly appreciated as, indeed, is your very thoroughly researched commentary. The latter is absent from many other sites and lends a great deal of additional interest to the films. Many thanks! (By the way, this film seems incredibly sharp. Was the original of unusually high quality or is it all down to your excellent and sympathetic restoration?)
I am watching in Korea. The progress of the United States is phenomenal. With the Japanese invasion of Korea, Korea lost its opportunity. With the help of the United States, Korea regained its freedom. Thank you America.
In the early 1970s I remember seeing off my grandparents on a cruise somewhere around Pier 57. What year did they stop throwing the paper streamers into the water as the ship left?
He made a mistake what he described is the Manhattan Bridge which does have 2 decks but the Brooklyn Bridge has a single deck and it is the first bridge that one crosses between the 2 boroughs.
Do you have any videos of the Irish immigrating to New York back in the day. They went through hell leaving the country and then coming to New York Boston in Chicago.
