Those roads to Whitewood and Jewel Ridge look like superhighways compared to the days I drove in that area of Buchanan County for work. The beauty of the hills and hollows and ridge top views were breathtaking and peaceful.
I was thinking the same thing. Whenever we would drive from Big Rock to my uncle's house on Bradshaw mountain i remember being so scared we would go off the mountain. There weren't even guard rails back then!
This was a nice ride at 3 am in the morning! In horrible pain & can't sleep. Had dr appt today for checkup on basal cell carcinoma I've had removed from my scalp & doc ended up freezing a place on my nose...tears flowing & ow, oww, owwww!! But thanks to you guys I got to "ride around" with 2 of my favorite people! So thank y'all for a wonderful ride in a beautiful area! God bless & y'all stay safe!
I was watching the video about the same time, and like you i couldn't sleep because of pain. I am disabled from a bad fall from a scaffold at work about twenty years ago. I have seven ruptured discs , Torn muscles in my shoulders and neck injury all of which are inoperable according to the neurosurgeon team at UVA, but when i read your post and your health problems i felt guilty about complaining. I will pray for you. God bless.
Great stories from you both. I just can't get over how beautiful it is in these hills in the winter. It seems like you can see things better without the leaves. I love these old highschool football fields.
My mom, Lanthia Erdine Jewell (1934-2017) graduated from Whitewood HS in 1953. I went briefly in 4th grade (1968) and 6th grade (1970). I haven't been back to that area since the 1980's. But I do have LOTS of relatives in the area. A few cousins .... and a LOT of distant cousins.
I love when you do a lot of driving than stopping for sights. I get to see the scenery I can no longer go up there and see. I live in Florida and a 30 minute drive would get you a long way.
I use to hear the older men talk about Whitewood, Va when I was a kid. They would always laugh & giggle about it. What went on in Whitewood back in the day? Awesome video thanks for sharing.
Sunbeam bread is yellow with a little girl, and has the Biblical verse, Man Shall Not Live By Bread Alone! There is a Sunbeam Bakery on Interstate 77 in West Virginia.
I really enjoy your videos always great footage of the different places you go to I also enjoy the conversations you and melody have with one another I get a kick out of her accent!
Melody, you remind me of my friend who would close her eyes as we drove across Rt 33/Swift Run Gap in Greene Cnty, Va. I made it worse by calling out the runaway truck ramps, LOL. You are such a sweetheart and Shane, poor thing I hope you’re better now! Bless you both!✝️
Wasn't there a folk song about Whitewood? At any rate, this video was so interesting. Since I am a retired teacher, I loved seeing the high school. Imagine attending a school that was built in 1940. This is an interesting place. Keep up the great work! Stay safe.
I think my high school was built in the 1940s. I liked it except for the wrought iron fence they put around it in the 1970s. That made it look like a prison and spoiled the ambience.
that’s my hometown. my parents went to whitewood and i went to twin valley. my dad is also the preacher of the white church just across the road of the community center. and yea our football field wasn’t really much of one🤣
The gym at the old Whitewood high school was only 30’+ 60’ ,most high school gyms are 40+84 and that made some very high scores game ,one game I remember was 114 to 165 Whitewood won.

Went over chicken ridge countless times. This is the truth......One wintry evening coming back from Richlands to Jewell Valley we almost slid off the road.Parents and 5 kids.We felt the car lift up and back on the road.To this day I believe it was God who came to our rescue❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I would feel a little sketchy about being out there in the sticks after dark. What if your car broke down, can you get cell reception in all these places?

My father was a basketball Legend at Whitewood high school back in the 1960s 7 to 70 is his name was Marcus Robinson
I’ve heard of him, if I’m not mistaken he still holds the state rebounding record with 48 in a game. He must have been a beast on the court.
