Just to explain why Service 128 was so popular - it was the Plymouth service and once away from Paignton there were not a lot of pick-ups, so it was pretty quiet for the conductor, who could pass away a lot of the time watching the scenery (even in summer, with holidaymakers having a day out in Plymouth!). There were only two round trips in a shift. And the driver didn't have a lot of stops and starts (unless a Western National bus with a crash gearbox had replaced a DG one). Like many other students, I spent my summer vacations (in the late 60s) as a DG bus conductor. Most of the regular conductors were trained as drivers so that when the services were greatly expanded for the summer trade they could be put on to driving and students were taken on to do the conductor's job. With overtime, it was quite well paid for a vacation job.
