Quick background: I've used the classic pocket stove design all over the world as an Army infantryman-SF guy. The Brit and French military rely on it too as a ration heater. So here's my field review (from a recent winter hike in the cold-ass Uintah mountains)
Pros: - Rugged, well designed and lightweight (1 ounce at home/garrison = 1 pound in the field, right ? )... - Lightweight cup means less heat wasted from the heat tab on a heavier metal cup such as a canteen cup, etc., - Lid and windscreen is the money maker here...keeps heat in water/cup....remember, that little heat tab only gives off so much heat and then it's gone - Perfect for a "brew up" or hot water for rehydrating freeze dried food (or heating MREs for you military types) - No Hazmat issues for airline travel (to my knowledge) like butane canisters or liquid fuel...also, fewer hiker/soldier/marine carry a "canteen" type cup and use a camelback type bladder, which is fine...except when you need to boil water...so this stove solves that problem.
Cons: - The only one I can think is like all stoves, it's thermodynamic "firepower" isn't as strong in wind or freezing temps as compared to a nice, warm windless day....as demonstrated by JIUJITSU2000.....it took me a full cube and some tuning twigs to get that good boil in low winter temps (remember in a cold environment your water, as well as the metal of the stove and cup, is very cold too). And its small size means it's pretty much an individual stove rather than a group stove.
Final Assessment: Perfect for short hikes, trips to the field and where simplicity, weight and space is important (hikers, soldiers/marines, it's made for you)..and the airlines/Air Force Hazmat people won't bust your butt on the fuel tabs....(i.e. to my knowledge, they do not need to be transported as Hazmat). Worth it's weight in gold when the weather drops to freezing and a hot brew means the all the difference between a cold suck-fest and good day in the field !

I have that same unit. Love the pot. The issue is there is no gap under the stove. Set it on some stakes and it works ok. It works great with the titanium tri-wing stove. I couldn’t get a boil in my garage with this unit.

During our 12-hours without electricity on the outskirts of Hurricane Irma, a similar cookset and stove worked great for us.

In the military we used to make up fire fudge, it had a real good Flame and could be shaped even painted. In the manual it was not design to cook but it was a alternative to taking pinches of C4 and cooking. 😀 Solid fuel is handy and light weight. Low or no smoke and not much scent as wood. Again thanks for showing people that they are many ways to skin a cat AKA cook in this case thank you!

Nice kit but you should always use a wind screen. It will force the heat from the flame straight up.

the important take away should be get a wind screen to use it out side

Your vid was perfect for what I was looking for. I wanted to see it in action and you did both inside and outside tests, thank you. Looking to use the Esbit tab cooking set to keep the coffee hot while I use the Esbit 5 piece alcohol set for making a light lunch, Knorr's Chicken Fried Rice Sides and some canned chunk chicken to "beef 😂" it up some. I already own the Esbit alcohol trekker set. I think the two of them together will make a nice combo for a long day hike or quick overnight tent stay. Thanks again, you do it right!

FINALLY! Someone used one of these using nature as fuel instead of the intended fuel tab/liquid. Thank you!

Another excellent video, sir. Well done.
With that said I suggest you consider adding a disclaimer when speaking of boiling water to purify it.
Something like this, perhaps: Boiling alone will not remove heavy metals or chemical contaminants from water.
Furthermore consider the TIME one should boil water: Most health organizations, including the Center for Disease Control, recommend that you boil water vigorously for 1 minute up to elevations of 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) and 3 minutes at elevations higher than that.

I like the idea of solid fuel stoves. The problem is that they just don’t work very well in the real world(as proven in this video). They’re supposed to be used outdoors, but their performances goes to hell with even a light breeze. I had one when I was in the military, and it was great for making hot water for coffee. They’re just not that great for actually cooking outdoors. I prefer an isobutane-propane canister stove. Just as easy to carry an way more efficient.

I have the 5 piece trekker (tab + alchol burner, pan lid) and love it but for one thing...I'm left handed and that little pour spout is easier for right handed to use, if there was a pour spout on both sides that would be ideal.

That's a pretty Snazzy little cook set I like how you showed how it does in windy environment cause that's how it will be sometimes outside but it's neat looking set up

Mistake with burner is - it has ventilation squares around it. There should be one small opening to put the wood or fuel chip that's it..

How did the stove hold up after the load of hot coals? It is aluminium of course, and I've heard that some of the old Swedish Army Trangia stoves become soft if wood is used as a fuel. Maybe the Esbits use a more heat resistant aluminium. I have found that these little Esbits really need a windscreen if you use them outdoors, as there are so many vents around the top that all the heat is blown away before it gets to the base of the pot. I use a thin strip of aluminium to close off half of the vents at the rear and just fold it over at each end and hook it into the vents to secure it.

im sure iv mentioned this before when a pot is heating to a boil it starts to make noise around 150 deg. and when it reaches a full boil it goes almost silent try to boil no peak s using the sound trick you will see it works

Man I gotta quit watching your channel.....Now I gotta find a stove for my "Bug In Bag"........This one might be a good choice...
On a side note...after watching (what is becoming a favorite show) I wanted to know about your knowledge level about wild herb, roots, etc for possible medical problems such as ...oh, I don't know..... How about spider bites for example!!!!!!!

Good vid but not interested in esbit products. I'll stick with alcohol and canister stoves. To me esbit is more gimmick than stoves. I have owned 2 long time ago, just not interested enough to buy one. It's like there copying everyone like jet boil and toaks.. Granted original firing should have had a windscreen, but even in kitchen, 10+ minutes for 2 cups of water, Come on man?
