Actor Mark Ruffalo sparks backlash by comparing conservative policy plan Project 2025 to Sharia law

- Actor Mark Ruffalo sparked a backlash on X, formerly Twitter, after he posted a statement on Tuesday comparing Project 2025, a controversial conservative policy plan, to Islam’s Sharia law.
Hundreds of users on X accused the actor of Islamophobia for using Islamic terms to describe the policy plan.
Project 2025, developed by conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation, is a document of more than 900 pages detailing controversial policy changes that could be implemented if Donald Trump wins the 2024 presidential election. It calls for reducing climate change regulations, adding further restrictions to abortion, removing laws protecting minorities from discrimination, ending programs aimed at improving diversity and inclusion in American society, and more. Critics have described the plan as “extremist” and “nationalist”.
Some users highlighted their disappointment in Ruffalo, who had previously spoken out against Israel’s war on Gaza and called for a ceasefire at the Directors Guild of America Awards earlier this year.

@@alaanasser3243This channel is good. They're pointing out the news on social media. It's their job. For those of us who don't follow Mark Ruffalo, the compIaints seem very valid. Other than wearing a red pin and maybe hinting at a few things here and there, there isn't much reason for me to think he truly supports PaIestinians and coIonized people whole-heartedly, as people seem to believe.

Alot of Americans don't understand what is supposed to be 'Shariah' law. It's further complicated how countries that claim to have it have not implemented Shariah in legitimate ways. Ruffalo has gone on a limb to advocate for Palestinians AND he is expressing a legitimate concern about Project 2025 that is real.
People could equally politely point out to him what constitutes 'Shariah' law is in itself problematic and best to just use 'fanatic' -- we all get that notion regardless of our religions. Fanatics exist in every religion and we really need to focus on stemming fanaticism, not getting hung up on this which is distracting from resolution that's sorely needed.
Whi wants Sharia law to be implemented? I consider any theocractic rule/regime/government unacceptable. Don't see how that is islamophobic.
The hulk speaks the truth.
I am 100% for the Palestinians. But I am also 100% against Jewish fundamentalism. And Islamic fundamentalism. And Hindu fundamentalism. And Christian fundamentalism too! And hence I agree with Mark Ruffalo. All those who want to implement Sharia law or talk about it positively are no different from the ones in the US who want to impose the Bible on the US which is a secular country and separation of church and state is one of the founding principles. He may be repeating something that Islamophobic people may say but it is the truth and the faster moderate Muslims come to their senses and oppose it the better. There is zero positive consequence of Sharia law. In any part of the world. Secular laws for all are the way to go. Separation of Church and state is why the West prospered. And that is why half the non-western world wants to flock to the west via immigration. Just admit it.
You do realize Sharia isn't just governmental law and neither is it set in stone. It is something rather fluid that scholars interpret. It sets out basic principles that should be followed (e.g. don't kill someone) and the rest is up to Muslim scholars to interpret and back up with evidence either from the Quran itself or the Sunnah. One country's Sharia can and will theoretically be different from another.
Sharia, as one of the posters in the video said, is something that explains to Muslims how we pray, what we eat, who and how we marry, what we wear, etc. It's not a "law" as in legal terms. Yes, Sharia does have laws constituting legality and how one should govern but it is only a part of what Sharia truly is. Sharia is a lifestyle above anything else. It is a teaching on how one should live their life.
Yes 🙌 I’m a Muslim against sharia law. People can dress it up all they want but look at countries that do have sharia law. Sure, their interpretations are all different - Iran is a different kind of crazy to Saudi Arabia - but they’re all dogmatically conservative and impervious to reason. Some people like to say that Sharia law is often applied alongside the customary law of the people - but religion shouldn’t be part of then government anyway. And calling Sharia Law a way of life doesn’t make it any better - it’s basically the same as following Leviticus to the letter. No thanks.
@@iamagirl9938 - spare me please! Tell that to the Afghan women and girls and Iranian women. Hard pass on the Sharia law and the Ten Commandments or the Hindu scriptures or the Torah dictating any civil laws. Viva la France I say! Long live the secular republics of the world!

Again your comment boils down to you, and many others like you, not knowing anything about what Sharia is truly meant to be. None of those countries implement Sharia correctly only twisting and using aspects that suit the people in charge while completely ignoring other fundamentals that don't suit their interest (In other words, corruption). It's utterly disgusting what they claim to do in the name of our religion. I have problems with them too in that regard.
Our religion doesn't allow killing girls who don't wear hijab, nor does it allow the right to deny women education. Aisha (RA), the wife of the Prophet (PBUH), was one of the greatest scholars in Islam. Not to mention Khadija (RA) was a lucrative businesswoman.
If there was a country in this world that implemented Sharia in the correct way I would happily live there. As it stands all those who pretend to practice Sharia have morphed it to suit their own interests.
Not to mention the many many crimes of so-called secular countries.
Being critical of Islam is not the same as Islamophobia. In a secular, democratic country, we don't want any Religious Law to be integrated into the Law of the Land. Whether it's Islamic law, Christian law, Jewish law, Hindu law, etc ... none of them have a place in the Law of the Land of a secular country.
The state should protect both freedom of religion _and_ freedom from religion. In France, a woman should be able to wear a hijab if she wishes. In Iran, a woman should be able to walk in public with her face uncovered.
Practice your religions (I see many positives in Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, etc), but do not expect religious _HEGEMONY_ .
So, there is no humanly possible way to criticise anything Muslim or Islamic ever?
Every single idea, creed, ideology on this earth is fallible, subject to criticism... but not Islam?

Even if his words were unintentional, they were still Islamophobic. He should apologize.
absolutely.
He may not have made that statement intentionally but it still sounds terrible. If he truly is sincere about what his intentions were he should come out, apologize, and offer an explanation.
I disagree. Firstly, the two cases are distinct. I would say most people thought the criticisms of Greta Thunberg were unhinged and clearly designed to defend the genocidal state of Israel against Palestinians.
I understand why Ruffalo's comments may appear ignorant and phobic since Sharia means custom or law and thus seems a redundancy/tautology (law law) but actually the term Sharia law does make sense if one differentiates religious laws/customs from law as that which is enforced by the(/a) modern state. As such, "Sharia law" tends to designate not religious customs or divine law but the enforcement of religious customs by what ought to be a secular state. His whole point actually does make sense in this regard. Even conservatives values are tolerable if not enforced on others by the state. In this respect, I agree with Ruffalo though I think the choice of words was unfortunate since it does tend to reinforce a common misconception that Sharia refers to theocratic rule.

Palestinians caused is easier to fight for because its purely black and white but on the subject that is more detailed than just called 'sharia law', if it takes learn folks years to understand the purpose behind it, then it certainly takes more for those who are ignorant to learn about it... Its not an easy subject, its also multidimensional..
Perhaps its a matter of his perspective of what shariah law actually is, thats misunderstood by him because this seems very out of character considering his past stances. A scholar needs to interview and educate him. I highly doubt this man is islamophobic, hopefully he proves to be true to this point. Because that statement is completely inaccurate and does not make sense.
These are facts not islamophobia! Islamic sharia law is not humane
He needs to educate himself about sharia law, as with many others.
He is a wonderful actor and great human being ❤
Uh oh you don't want the Hulk to be angry Abdools😂
Well hes absolutely right 🤷🏻♂️
He, like many Americans including myself, have absolutely no earthly idea as to what Sharia law is. We hear it thrown around to justify not allowing women to be seen in public without a male family member with her. We hear it thrown around about not allowing women to have careers or go to school. We hear all kinds of things that leads to ignorance on our part and a fear of it. Like the fear of the unknown.
Its complicated a bit but the gist of it is that a full style sharia is the stuff u would find in saudi arabia, aghanistan, iran etc. the preference now in the levantine and Maghreb region to only use the modern compatible stuff about it and forego archaic outdated stuff that would be treated as too unjust, oppresive and/or problematic
Under Sharia, a woman really cannot leave her home or join a career if her mahram (male guardian) does not allow it. You were not misled.
Just because most Muslims don't practice this anymore because it seems over-controlling does not mean that it's not part of Sharia (Islamic law).
Islam is a patriarchal religion.
@@psychopassisamasterpiece1997 u dont no what it is stop copying stuff off google and commenting
@@haelotny6523 another non Muslim who doesnt even know what sharia is and ur commenting smh
some people always make excuses to save their favourite celebrity even if everything is straight & clear. He made islamophobic comments for which he should atleast apologise to all muslims.
Ofcourse it's the Anon Twitter accounts getting "offended" and accusing him of BS..
He has the Sharia Pass, so no problem.
I can’t see anything wrong.
Coz sharia law is so progressive yea
Wow, when they're suddenly concerned about islamophobia, you know something is being engineered.
Challenge impossible :Hollywood actors trying not to extremely dumn
He is ignorant on the matter. Hopefully someone helps him learn what Islam actually is.
No because western countries do not want sharia law, nor do they want a Christian version of it.
He is correct
Great man❤
As a British Muslim, I find the implication that 'Shariah law' is in any way negative deeply ignorant and disrespectful. However, I do not think he was aware of that. It is therefore forgivable.
It's okay. Respect to Mark despite disagreement.
He's defended a lot more Muslims, than muslims themselves. And at risk of losing his job.
Youre wrong this time middle east eye. Sheria law has extremist rules. Im muslim but i admit it. Yes mark couldve used other examples but that doesnt mean that hes completely wrong. Stop friendly fire.
Hypocrite by Disney. Remember Gina Carano was fired by Disney for doing the same thing as Mark Ruffalo.
Change starts somewhere. I will still support him
No way this can't be true. No mannnnn. He always supported Muslims before. WTH is going on
Wasn’t he the guy clapping for the Palestinian protest. Maybe poor chose of words/ignorance.
Mar Ruffalo isn't Islamophobic, and if we fall for this, then we also fall for calling anything antisemitic.
I don't know why people can't see this.
Mark Ruffalo the actor who pretends he's "The Incredible Hulk?' I always take what he says seriously
But Sharia _is_ a bunch of conservative religious laws. He did nothing wrong by calling conservative laws motivated by Christians' religion as Christian Sharia, especially since those Christians spread fear of Islamic Sharia being applied on everyone while hypocritically being okay with Christian laws being applied on everyone.
Well, my knowledge of Sharia is very limited; but from what I've read and heard so far, it includes procedures for things like resolving financial disputes, slaughtering and dividing livestock, going through divorce, etc. Most of it is not the sort of thing that could realistically be "imposed" on anyone. Project 2025 would probably not survive a court challenge; but it's clearly based on far-right ideology, including Dominionist and Seven Mountains theology, both of which are bad news for anyone who wants to live in a free, democratic society...
In a way he's just lowering the level of his speech to make himself clear to stupid people who only understand stupid analogies
OMG he absolutely is not being Islamophobic and he is so supportive of minorities, and of Palestine. He put his neck
Out for Palestinians, where even Arab leaders and leaders of other muslim countries have not. He is our hero. Mark we love you ❤❤❤
