    🚩 Considered one of the most important defeats in Roman history, the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest brought the triumphant period of expansion under Augustus to an abrupt end. It discouraged the Romans from pursuing the full conquest of Germania, instead switching to tribute collection, thus can be considered one of the most important events in European history.

    I think this is not just about Arminius' betrayal and Varus' gullibility, but also the problem to hold a difficult territory with 3 Legions that was gained by 11 Legions. So Tiberius contributed to the defeat by withdrawing 8 of the legions with him....

      It's highly similar to when President George Washington's military leadership & generals were utterly reckless & incompetent during the Wabash campaign in the 1790s. They lost a lot of men and literality regiments during the campaign akin to Varus's march.

      In hindsight Ilyria was way more important than germania. Mind you that one revolt there almost toppled the whole of the roman empire, while in germania the germans had always a pretty hard time to cross the fortified rhine, but yes it was still dumb to let such a ferocious land be guarded by 3 legions

      I mean not really. If you compare it to Cannae and other major losses where they lost over 70,000+ soldiers. 15,000 is a pretty small defeat in the grand scheme of things if we compare it to other losses in their history

    • @DisFantasy
      @DisFantasy 2 місяці тому +6

      @@jamesschaller753 As I understand it, Rome's military was more professional at this time. Meaning man for man, the military was stronger, but also more expensive. Rome didn't have an expansive empire back during Cannae that required a large military presence throughout the region. Those 80,000 were men taken off the streets and trained and equipped in short order, and while they would be sorely missed, it would not be for their military prowess.
      Losing a large force abroad in the field would have after shocks throughout the empire. It took years to prepare and position those legions. Losing them reset the board in Germany.

    As a German this battle continues to be a bit more special to me than most of your other superb covered battles of old. The defeat of a seemingly unstoppable war machine by simple tribesmen who just had enough of being bullied around.
    I especially like how you continue to evolve the quality of the channel and step it up a bit every time you make a video.

      Cause hollywood wants you to think the bad Romans were defeated in two hours of unorganised cinematic fightings by the good germans instead of in almost 4 days of miserable and constant brutality, violence and fighting in the mud mixed with blood.
      Both sides did unimaginable brutalities to win this battle, for the Romans to at least try to flee from it and for the Germans to inflict a loss as impactful and devastating as possible.
      There was no hero in that forest.
