No, fairness is equality of law. You cannot have equality of opportunities. For example, we from the start have very unequal physical and cognitive abilities. Also, if you were born in a rich family and your parents read a book a day, you have so much more opportunities to succeed than if you were born from a poor drug addict single mom and put into a shelter at age 5. Education of our parents is crucial when it comes to succeeding in a society, socialization under age 5 is the most important period of our life and whether we like it or not, it decides a loooot about our future. Language skills, emotional control, and overall knowledge are very dependent on where we were born, it's a myth to think that just because we all go to school this is equal opportunity, it's not, and im not even talking about preferential education based on wealth. That doesn't mean we are doomed, but some start to run at the top of the hill and others have to climb it.

I'm always suprised when I encounter anyone who knows much about either love or war. .
God is the author and foremost example of love, but the vast majority of people choose enmity with God.
War is an endeavor which is harder to master than brain surgery, but professional warriors are actually more essential to the life of a free nation in a sick world than a doctor is to a sick patient.
As for the phrase, "All's fair..." it seems to be a Descriptive thing that could be perverted by thinking it to be a Prescriptive thing which would be neither lovely, nor the way of a noble warrior.

    • @persona189blank6
      @persona189blank6 5 років тому

@@Karamarika In ancient times it was common practice to tear down the monuments and temples of defeated enemies. As for erasing someone's legacy I disagree with that, but there are other ways of doing so such as museums and document. To have a statue for someone is to literally put their ideals and character on a pedestal. While the Confederate generals were mostly good people the cause they are most known for supporting and fighting for is slavery. (I hate to use Hitler as an example, but he's the most infamous and I lack sufficient knowledge of every other example.) It's like if the Germans erected a statue of Hitler for getting them out of the depression. While he did technically accomplish that his good deeds are overshadowed by his evil deeds. While the Confederates are nowhere near as evil as the Nazis this doesn't mean we should try to prop up what they stood for as something that should be looked up to. (Yes I know it wasn't all about slavery, but slavery happens to be the most infamous cause.)

Careful with that one, it is a country, not a company.
We already have a real world manifestation of that philosophy: Private universities.
Charter schools enjoy a witches brew of the guarantee of public funding, but the freedom of private enterprise. Oh sure, they look good on paper, but they can expel problem students, to include those with learning disabilities.
With public schools, no such luxury exists, a student gets expelled, that student is still in the system.
The free market system is not above criticism either, look no further than the gilded age of the late 1800's. Child labor, homelessness, education only to those that can afford it, corruption, and most famous of all, food.
While I too enjoy Prager's content, I'm no sycophant. The free market has had more than enough chances to clean up its act, and still chooses not to. Don't believe me? Look up "wage fraud", the economic damage that daily everyman crime committed dwarfs anything Madoff has caused.

The problem with framing, unfortunately, is that the people can use a word, such as "just", and change its meaning based on examples.
"It would be *just* if the baker makes more than the banker because of the hardships the baker has to go through that the banker does not. Therefore, justice should be enacted and a portion of the banker's wealth should be given to the baker. Because it's just." Don't think for one second that English is the reason framing exists. Remember the Germans justified the Holocaust, in German, because it was framed that they were the problem.

She went to the bunny, she didn't want to help. She went to the goat, he didn't want to help. So she took all day to make the bread and everyone wanted to eat the loaf when she was done. But she said no none of you did anything to deserve this, why should i let you benefit at no sacrifice from you. I like that story alot more seeing all the entitled babies in this generation.

I taught my children that in life, there is no "fairness fairy". Study hard, work diligently, be kind to others and expect that success is predicated upon their efforts, nothing else. I wish people "best of luck, and by luck, I mean those things we do to create opportunities for ourselves". My kids are well-adjusted and successful. Can't ask for more than that.

  • @persona189blank6

I think the best definition of fair that I have seen can be summed up in this quote from a webnovel.
"The prerequisite of fairness is efficiency. If one thing fails to achieve the goal, it could not be called as fair. The purpose of the imperial examination system in the mortal world is to select people who are erudite and capable. Therefore, it is fair to be an official through study, and it is unfair to spend money to buy an official post. But if it is in the auction, it is fair for the one who bid the highest get the item." (Once upon a time there was a spirit sword mountain, chapter 592)
Therefore I believe that determining fairness requires a goal. If we decide the market's goal is to ensure people are properly compensated for their labor and the products that are produced than a completely free market is not the best solution. This is largely because of the presence of dishonesty and corruption. Markets can and have historically lied about the products they sell (Addictive drugs in medicine and food). From a free market perspective, this could theoretically be resolved by reviews and companies that rate and recommend products. However, companies have been shown to be very capable of manipulating information.
In this cases like these the government should intervene as its officials while still capable of being corrupt have an incentive to not do so as they can be removed by the will of the people who put them there. Now we run into another problem, these government offices cost money and many people who stand to benefit from it are paying nothing. Now this creates a new conflict as the government is clearly unable to meet the initial goals of the market. Therefore we can continue to try to make the government's goal the same as the market (like how Chinese government owned businesses compete with Private business) or change the goal of the government. Thus we have conflicts over the government's goal and how best to meet it.
I will stop here as this can go on forever with no final answer. My point is that while I respect and often agree with the principles and ideas behind PragerU's solutions/suggestions I find that they often tend to give a solution as it is the only solution without offering opposing viewpoints or straw manning the opposition when they do.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to resolve the dilemma of fairness or disagrees with my opinions please give me a reply and sorry for the long comment.

And you provide value by having skills... You can work in ANY industry and earn millions of dollars if that is your goal or be financially free. (An argument could be made for a 1-year severance, but for 6-8 years?!) Imagine if this were done in the workplace? You QUIT a job of 10 years and the EMPLOYER must pay a severance for 6-8 years?
Is it fair that the higher earning spouse must pay child support even though custody is 50/50 and the children are equally his and her financial responsibility?

I can relate to the "fairness" of the story below. The word fairness is often misused by people who didn´t put in the effort. The example of the two brothers with the same upbringing and opportunities perfectly shows this idea. One of them has smoked ten joints a day since his early teen years, quits school, is lazy and has friends with the same bad habits. The other studied, graduated as a doctor, surrounded himself by people with the same ambitions, AND took care of the family business after their father passed away. Is it fair that both get the same share of the family business profits? There's a huge gap between having rights and fairness. Justice should be to give someone what he deserves, not what he expects for being born. Thank you for the video.

I firmly believe the question shouldn't be about whether the free market system works, because it clearly does. The question should be about whether or not the machine is working properly... whether it be through manipulation or inevitability. In a place like the US, the fairness question comes about so often because of the birth lottery and brand name phenomena.
Birth lottery effect: Determines where you are born (NYC or Detroit? Good school districts or bad? Good job market or bad?) and initial socioeconomic resources. This is the biggie, as the correlation between that and success is staggering.
Brand name effect: Kid #1 busts his ass and works two jobs to get through school with a top notch GPA, Kid #2 had his parents pay full tuition and never even worked during those 4 years. Both finish with similar GPA's, achievements, and have the same major. Kid #1 went to a state school and Kid #2 went to Harvard. Kid #2 gets carte blanche access to recruitment channels at top firms as a result, and Kid #1 is forced to start his career cold calling because he wasn't at a target school (and crushing debt as a bonus).
PragerU is right in the sense that when people complain about fairness they need to be more specific and less ambiguous about what they actually mean. The answer shouldn't rely on arbitrary estimates of how much the rich should be paying... the answer should depend on which actions can be undertaken to mitigate the two toxic effects. How do we make it so that kids in the US have access to similar quality *PUBLIC* education, and how to we make it so that antiquated reliance on ivy league institutions and their questionable quality advantages over lesser known schools is reduced? Our school and university systems need to be more standardized across the country, doing this would erase so many of the directly observable feedback loops that makes others feel left out. Perception is reality and so long as the internet allows us to peek into the lives of others, people will be noticing those differences in privilege and will grow angrier until something is done to dampen that perception.

@@MBasu-km8by he just means that the rich don't pay proportional to everyone else. while progressive tax is unfair to the rich, a flat tax is even more unfair to the poor. America last year earned 3.5 trillion (check my figure) in tax revenue and there are around 200 million 18 and older (and therefore tax eligible) citizens in the US. Divide that figure you get around $17,500. Not great for the poor. The average household makes around 90K, that's a lotta damage.

Fairness is complex... thus it cannot be made a blanket statement. It has to be precise. Especially because not only is there no shortage of unfairness and thrownness in existence, we can get it dangerously wrong in a malicious way when we choose a type of fairness and, regardless of the choice, we take it too far, fast and hard. I think we need to acknowledge all possible conceptions of what fairness can be and bring them all to the table and decide which ones to put forth to fix a multi-level complex issue. And the definition and decision of fairness can change again to account for another multi-level complex issue, that differs to some degree or another from the others. It's not a "best" and one-size fits-all" approach - that is not only childish and immature, but worse than that, it's a contributable suicidal threat towards existence itself (and it's the type of threat that people that want to look for trouble to make things worse and to see things burn, would look to push and further hide under the falsely portrayed and exaggerated, benevolent facade - just seeing how they act and how that deviates from their words and appearances tells you so much).
We can talk about it for an indefinite period of time... and we probably need to, because the alternative makes things much worse, for example, a crippling scenario that is lead by (to use a simple summary) either a "too fair" or "too unfair" strategy. Either side of the spectrum is a dangerous cliff that you can fall off and die painfully. I reckon we have to strike that balance, and it's dynamic because the road and it's side-cliffs are changing all the time to some degree or another. Thus we have to always either reserve a current functionable balance or, if not, recalibrate, recast and discover a new functioning balance that is ideally better than the previously decaying one... because by then, the road (ie. External or internal factors outside of our control) has changed it's course.

The problem with the banker analogy is that the top banks are protected by the Federal Reserve. It's not a free market if they get bailed out by the reserve printing them more money to cover their debts, and devalue the money of those that actually work for it by constant inflation. I don't disagree with keeping what's yours, but that's the problem, it's not theirs to give, and we don't get a vote. Financial democracy died with the gold standard. The banks are out of control and the repo market is on life support.

This video argues that what is fair, is that a person is only worth their capital. Think about it. Someone born into a rich home, with wealthy parents is now inherently worth more, it is only just that they receive more, because their parents were richer. The treatment of their diseases, the quality of their education, for everything, it is only "fair" that they receive the best, while others suffer for having access to only inferior versions or none at all.
You cannot think this is the correct way, if you have ever regarded the statement "all men are created equal" as remotely true.

Yeah, it’s more important if money is given as a voluntary remuneration as opposed to a forced tribute, even if the recipient receives billions in the former case. BUT:
Tax rates are about commensurate contributions to the government’s tasks. There is a reason why there will always be a non-taxable income bracket, regardless if “flat tax” or not. If you take 10 % of a single person earning less than 12 grands a year, it means forcing someone to give up something essential, such as food of better quality. The same applies for higher income brackets in contrast to the highest brackets. One Person has to make do with a second hand family car because of the tax toll, whereas the same given tax rate means nothing for a billionaire (I’m not for 70 % tax rates, though).
If someone wants more money for investment reasons, he can usually leave the money in corporations. For smaller businesses, there should be a tax rebate for investments.
