    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
Hey, I could really use your help.
If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you.
A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”

Hello. Just wanna ask. Is the sign language for miss (not catch) the same as the sign for miss that means not being hit? Ex. The bullet miss the target.

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  9 місяців тому +2

The general sign for "miss / guess" can indeed mean not be hit. As in if you throw a snowball at me and miss I might likely tease you with the "miss/guess" sign for missing me. However something to keep in mind is that in ASL we have various types of signs (that are sometimes referred to as "classifiers" and/or depictive signing) that can be very specific in regard to expressing the concept of "miss." For example, after indicating that a gun was shot I could move an index finger past my head and nick my ear and then mime reacting to getting my ear nicked by a bullet. Or I could show the bullet missing my ear and react with relief (or panic and run, ha).
My point is that by learning the sign "miss/guess" you have learned a very general way to sign "miss" (as in not get hit) but you have not learned every way to sign "miss."

Check the laws in your state.
Don't put yourself on the street with nowhere to go until you've checked to see if there are laws that allow you to stay where you are at for a full 30 days or longer "legally."

Nine K misses, that's nothing compared to learning ASL, I remember when it felt like juggling all the signs in my head, just to keep them there, that feels like long time ago, now sometimes the sign into my hands before the word into my head. If you want it stronger in you, every-day focus that, even just a little, more is better, practice pours directly into fluency. ASL is so flexible, diverse, there is soooo-much, when it feels most difficult, that's just the brain rewiring itself for ASL, so feed it with as much as you can, I'm further than I knew existed when starting~

Four to six months in, I realized that everything I learned so far was just the foundation, now two year in, I see it's just a broader foundation, but, I can communicate with Deaf now, and before I was clueless, and if I become deaf, I have that solid foundation, not just in ASL, but in different communication strategies, and that was my first goal, to not feel helpless when confronted with that~

Hey, some Latin creeping in! I took Latin in highschool and used to be pretty good at speaking conversational Latin. However, since learning ASL, I've forgotten a lot of the Latin vocabulary.
Trivia: centum is pronounced with a "k" sound

My joke is, I can't practice speaking Latin and signing at the same time because I might accidently cast a spell, or summon a demon. 😅

Hello Dr. Vicars, at around 3:50, in that particular sentence, what exactly did you mean by line of work didn't need another sign (as you guys were signing both "work" and "line of work"). I was a bit confused if you only needed to sign one or the other? Thank you.
Edit: Thank you for taking the time to explain.

Hello. For those reading this please understand that typing in capital letters in an ASL discussion is not yelling but rather it is indicating the label or gloss for a sign.
As far as the discussion regarding "LINE-OF-WORK" I wanted to make sure that she understood that the gloss LINE-OF-WORK means do that particular sign and don't add the separate sign WORK afterward.
If you are in a low context situation and need to make it clear that you are not talking about a school major -- you can put WORK in front of LINE-OF-WORK or even afterward -- but the gloss for that would be either WORK LINE-OF-WORK or LINE-OF-WORK WORK.
My gloss wasn't showing the extra sign WORK so I didn't want her adding it.
In high context -- it becomes redundant to sign:
      WORK LINE-OF-WORK WORK
The main point I was making to my student was that the sign LINE-OF-WORK is not "LINE-of-WORK WORK"
Also, if someone signs MY WORK LINE-OF-WORK it can be thought of as meaning "in my work and my career..." That is generally okay even even though it is redundant and you could drop the sign WORK.
If there is a lot of context already we don't want to sign an extra "work" in there as in:
      MY WORK LINE-OF-WORK WORK
      because that is like saying:
"in my work and my career work." (Awkward.)
