Bob Berg played every solo like it was his last. Balls to the wall all the time. Bird would have loved him!
I went to school with Berg at the high school performing arts in New York City
I think you can give credit to his father for bringing home a few Coltrane albums
He was a great loss to the community that one nasty snow storm on the Montauk Highway on Long Island. It’s kind of ironic I spoke to him the day before his passing.
His wife died too in this horrible accident?

That soulful sound mixed with harmonic insight always equaled great solos in my book!

Some of Bob Berg's best JAZZ work was with Horace Silver and reached the pinnacle when he joined great Cedar Walton, Sam Jones and Billy Higgins. After that he joined the fusion wagon and things went downhill. He was immensely talented, opinionated, arrogant and likeable guy I knew well and miss.
I had the same analysis.
The music he did with Dave Kikoski, Ed Howard and Dennis Chambers was out of this world. I suggest you rethink that
Partly Agree. His playing on 1977's 'Eastern Rebellion 2',w/ Walton, Hggins, Jones and Curtis Fuller is indeed nothing short of stellar. 'Fantasy in D' and 'Firm Roots' are stand outs. But IMHO, he also sounded pretty incredible with Miles Davis during the 1984, 1985 and 1986 tours, playing some outstanding solos where he made the most out of those one chord Funky/Fusion vamps. There's plenty of videos from those tours on youtube, check 'em out if you have a chance.
His work with Mike stern an dennis was some of his best playing he grew into himself when he started to play fusion
Nomatter the style or era, Bob Berg played the absolute shit out of the saxophone. He was a tenor superstar!

I prefer Bob Berg to Mike Brecker in playing jazz. Bob's sax solo had a strong spirit, just like John Coltrane.
i bet your mom prefered your other brother better than you, that would explain your sick state of mind. the last thing jazz people love - is being compared. go further and compare Coltrane to Parker and say that u prefer a violin more than the valve trombone.

Agree for jazz. Berg was a monster. Wish he would have stayed in more straight ahead settings, but I dig all his stuff. REALLY miss him.

5 years ago I didn't even have access to UA-cam. Is Jazz still Dying? Or is it experiencing a Rebirth? Everything has Its Season. It Bears Fruit and the Fruit is either picked or it falls from the Vine to fertilize the fruit of the Next Season. Your Negativity has no bearing on Me, or what I will do, and it has No bearing on the young people coming Up!. All you see is Death! When I first discovered Jazz in the late 70's, it was a total desert, and look at it Now! Many gifted young players, all trying to teach each other, pass on what they have learned. What I hope is that the Negativity of People like You Dies. And good Riddance! You and Your Pitiful Self Moroseness, what have you Contributed?
