Very Nice. I have not heard you mention thrust requirements being taken into consideration throughout your build so far. I recently spent a fair bit of time building what I thought was a great ship to launch into space, only to discover I couldn't even get it off the build platform.
I'd love to be able to tell you that I worked it out, but to be honest I did wing it. I have seen and understand the formula for calculating how much thrust is required based upon the weight of your ship. But that is where I get stumped. I thought that looking in the info sheet of the K menu, that the Mass provided the weight. But there are two problems with this that I can see. Firstly, the Mass seems to include the entire grid that you are building on. In space that may be OK if you are building a free floating ship. But on a planet, its an entirely different ball game. Also, it appears that Mass and Weight do not equate. From what I have seen so far, it appears that the only way you can find the weight of a ship is in the Cockpit HUD once the ship has lifted of the base, which seems a bit dumb because you can't calculate the required thrust until you have taken off. Any video on working out how many thrusters are required in a build would be greatly appreciated.
Yeah, it's a bit rough working it all out on planet. My current idea for it is to build a rig to show how many thrusters it takes of each type for certain core blocks and then how many armour blocks you can lift with each. It might help with visualising the approximate weight of your ship. I'd be doing this testing in 1G so that it should be relatively easy to adjust it to lower or higher G environments. My plan with the series at the moment, is to finish this little miniseries, do a lighting tutorial then the thrusters after that (need time to build and test the rig). I've also got plans for showing how to build some welding and grinding ships :)
Mick, working out the weight of the ship isn't so difficult. It's equal to the mass multiplied by the the gravity present, so on earth-like planets with 1G it is mass multiplied by 9.8 (I'm very tired, someone correct me if I fluffed that up)
awesome series ive been playing Space engineers for a long time now and still have trouble with ship design always end up with either a flying brick that either can only fly in only atmosphere or only in space or a ship so heavy i cant get it to fly at all or it runs out of hydrogen before being able to escape a planet, anyways great videos its given me a few ideas to try as im trying to design a drop ship that can take cargo a couple small ships and several passengers on and off a planet to dock with or land in a larger space station or larger ship for travel between planets, anyways just earned a new sub :)
I'm really pleased these have helped :) There are definitely better designers than me out there, but hopefully these can be a springboard to those sorts of designs for you. It's awesome that you've got a purpose in mind for the ship as I think that makes it easier to get a cool looking design (or at least I find it helps). The first question I'd ask myself for a design like you're talking about is: do I want an internal hangar or landing pads, or something else entirely for the little ships to dock onto... that'd probably be the biggest part of the ship
good point so probably best to start with the hangar first I am planing on doing an air tight hangar though it seem no matter how i plan it it ends up way bigger then anticipated and heavy though i did find a website yesterday www.ratuska.fi/se/thruster.php that helps to determine how many thrusters are needed for the weight of the ship so ill probably play around with that as well and see if i can finally get a ship that can travel in both atmosphere and space while still doing what I want and not look like a brick lol.
Yeah, airtight hangars are often enormous. It could be interesting to make it as tight around one ship as possible and have multiple hangars if that allows you to make it smaller. If nothing else, the docking procedure would be exciting! Thanks for the link to that website, I might highlight it when I do the thruster calculation video :)
yea that website works great i used it when building the atmo miner you did in on of your earlyer tutorial videos and it recommended 3 large thrusters or 12 smalls thrusters in each direction so I modified that and it seemed to handle even better. and in planet gravity which is the most challenging for me.
Oh nice, I've got a similar sized ship I built with 3 large lifting thrusters, makes for a much larger capacity on the ore from each run which is nice. But I bet those extra thrusters make it handle a LOT better!
I think your set up here could be improved by: 1) painting a grid on your platform. A big cross i the middle, squares of different colours running from there. That way you will see where you are on you ship building at a glance rather than counting bricks all the time. 2) Construction gantries; even if they are static rather than moving they should help you build without using so much jet pack fuel. 3) A big welding/ grinding arm tied into you base storage will enable you to build much fastr without the use of a dedicated construction ship. Give its own cockpit and camera and you are there.
The grid is actually a pretty good idea to help maintain symmetry and measurements :) I don't mind using the hydrogen since ice is so easy to come by, but that's a personal preference I think gantry's would be cool to use more for the challenge of constructing them well. I'm too worried about clang with using a welding arm because you'd need a mix of pistons and rotors to get it into the right position - that combination terrifies me :O
If not an arm then maybe a boom with multiple welders. Two pistons on either end for height and a piston track on either side of the construction bay. That way you could build up your ship layer by layer like some kind of futuristic 3D printer ship yard. Or you could put the ship on a turn table so you move your welder on pistons and turn your ship this way and that to get it in and out. I do think that the arm would be a worthwhile cosmetic project at least. Anyway I am just getting into Space engineers and your series is a big help. I was kind of expecting a cross between Kerbal space project and from the depths but it really isn't like that. Shalower in someways but deeper than others I was expecting.
I wish that I could build like you do with all of those incomplete blocks. But I find that I can't see what I am doing unless I fully build the blocks after installing just a handful. It does make for a longer process when changes are required.
Yeah, it's definitely harder designing in survival because of that, over time you'll get more comfortable with what the blocks will look like and you'll be able to lay down more before building it.
if you want to be able to build badass looking ships, add some ribs and get abbout 2000h of playtime, mayby take a break for once. i just gotten back into the game and was suprised that i actually gotten some good looking ships out recently, well 2k h of playtime just makes everyone able to get some skills in building
@@Splitsie with a similar silly Action i grinded a full big Cargo Container.. And all was lost in space. This is the poinnt when you Grab a New beer from the fridge :)))
I honestly can't remember properly how the internals of the Talisman came together (been quite a while since I built it), but I know when I did the redesign to fit a jump drive inside I had a few things that I could optimise :)
Is 4 large hydrogen tanks overkill with that ship? I’m in the middle of building a ship much larger than this one. It’s got 6 large thrusters and 12 small hydro thrusters. With 2 large hydro tanks and 2 small. I can repurpose some space. Should I add more?
It wasn't overkill until quite recently. I prefer to have lots of fuel since I have a bad habit of not noticing when it's low and then being adrift with no means to stop or move. Since a recent update they've dramatically reduced the fuel requirements for thrusters so it'll all be about how long you want to be able to fly before refuelling
@@Splitsieits the block that attaches to the refinery by the conveyor tube that corner piece it doesnt latch on just falls to the ground if you try a workaround
With so much extra space in the interior, you probably could have built an airlock with a drop down floor using pistons instead of having a big stationary ramp hanging off the front of the ship all the time. Then you wouldn't have to worry so much about breaking off your ramp on a less than perfect landing too.
Nope, pistons would have been a bad idea, pistons/rotors/hinges on anything that's intended to fly near planets leads to a frustrating drift because the game doesn't calculate the mass of the subgrids attached to those blocks properly so hovering becomes an exercise in frustration - not to mention docking to something :(
@@Splitsie Oh, really?!?! Good to know!!! That kinda sucks, though. Really leaves you with no other option but a permanent, stationary ramp unless you want to deal with those consequences, huh? Hopefully they will fix that issue at some point? I'm sure lots of people would really rather have boarding ramps that close up or elevator type airlocks and such. It's kind of a staple feature of sci-fi space ships. Not to mention cargo bays and fighter bays that open into space. I'm totally bummed now lol...
i wonder, will it work with batteries? im far from platinum on my save, let alone uranium, if so how many fully charged batteries would cover for one reactor power? im still new to this game xD
alright, ill try to fix in some batteries then, i took the functionality form from your ship but im editing the decor, lets just hope i don't ding something up xD
i...may have some problems with the ship i worked for 3 weeks building it T.T ion engines work just with power right? can they be used to fly in atmosphere too? i'm in survival on an earthlike planet, i will need to leave the planet with the ship with hydrogen thrusters, land on a moon and search for platinum. It'll be a 1 shot trip
Ion thrusters have massively reduced thrust output in atmosphere, so on earth/mars/alien/europa/titan they'll be less effective than in space/moon regions. It's why for landing on those planets you'll normally require hydrogen thrusters too
Nope, they're all vanilla. In my tutorial videos I make sure I stick with vanilla for everything, if there's any mod or script I make sure I point them out clearly :)
I know this is an old video so i don't know if i'll get a response however, I followed your videos for this large ship tutorial to the letter and when you put the angled blocked on at 4:35, for me, the one on the refinery and the conveyor tube won't place like it did for you. Am I doing something wrong or did the game update to prevent that?
It's possible they removed the attachment points at the bottom of the refinery which would have been holding that block in place. To give that block a new spot to connect to, the corner conveyor near it could be replaced with an armoured conveyor which would then allow it to connect to something :)
Great tutorials I have learnt a lot from you... However when I put ice into this ship it just drains somewhere and does not fill the hydrogen tanks, I have followed your video step by step, anybody else having this issue?
The hydrogen tanks take a LOT of ice to fill. Check the tanks in the control panel and in the lower right of the screen you should see a % filled, if your ice gets into the O2 gen, then you should see this increase gradually with each load assuming you also have power for the generator to function
Sadly not something I'm likely to be able to do, my upload speed is so crappy that our internet would be next to unusable for almost half a day if I uploaded something that long :( The joys of the Australian government thinking that 25Mbps is all anyone will ever need! (I don't even get that much for download most of the time)
I know Aussies don't have a monopoly on bad internet, but the speeds you're describing are better than what I currently get, and the best I can ever hope for if policy doesn't change :(
I'm not being sarcastic here but thanks for not giving me the name because i now have most of his songs to use in content creation, instead of just one
I'm gradually working toward doing some videos on player made weapons and a guided torpedo will likely be part of that :) No promises on how soon that will be though :P
Not since the survival update last year, now uranium is only found in asteroids - which I think was a good change to the game as it makes things more interesting with power production on planets :)

Ok, one thing that does irritate me about your videos Splitsie, you seem to assume people are within reach of Uranium, i've been playing survival for quite some time now and i have only come across Uranium ONCE and that was when i shot down a drone from the SPRT (Space Pirates) so please explain to me as carefully as you can, how the hell i get URANIUM! I've been to space, i cannot find it in Asteroids, I seem to only find them as loot from NPCs which is extremely limiting. A response would be appreciated as you can probably imagine, watching your videos and not being able to build your ships or examples is extremely frustrating. Thank you
I get you're frustrated but you might have avoided a lot of it by reading the other comments on these very old tutorials, they're from a time when the game had uranium everywhere. I have since made newer tutorials (though didn't replace this one yet) that are linked at the top of my channel page that have been made in the time since uranium was removed from the Earth like planet (and all the other ones too). In all the ships I've built with reactors you can simply replace the reactor with a battery and everything will still work though you'll need to charge the ship from an external source. Uranium is in asteroids in the vanilla game but as it's pot luck you can end up stuck searching through a LOT of asteroids before you find it even if you're using a large grid ore detector, sounds like you've just had bad luck.
It's important to be careful to ensure you don't separate the two parts of a large grid when grinding unless it's all still considered a station, sadly if they're mobile grids the only way to reconnect the two parts will be with merge blocks which can be hard work depending on what other vehicles you have available to move the parts around
Great design ideas and a much-needed tutorial on avoiding bricks.
Yeah, those pesky bricks are always a problem - unless you want a brick for some nefarious purpose...

Sounds great.
Mick, working out the weight of the ship isn't so difficult. It's equal to the mass multiplied by the the gravity present, so on earth-like planets with 1G it is mass multiplied by 9.8
(I'm very tired, someone correct me if I fluffed that up)
Me, binging space engineers content like I'm starving while not even having the game:
awesome series ive been playing Space engineers for a long time now and still have trouble with ship design always end up with either a flying brick that either can only fly in only atmosphere or only in space or a ship so heavy i cant get it to fly at all or it runs out of hydrogen before being able to escape a planet, anyways great videos its given me a few ideas to try as im trying to design a drop ship that can take cargo a couple small ships and several passengers on and off a planet to dock with or land in a larger space station or larger ship for travel between planets, anyways just earned a new sub :)
I'm really pleased these have helped :)
There are definitely better designers than me out there, but hopefully these can be a springboard to those sorts of designs for you.
10:33 the music and him talking that way sounds like a motivational video lmao
Well, it is supposed to motivate people to try their hand at more interesting ship designs ;)
@@Splitsie and it has definitely worked, just a few of your videos helped me understand how to play the game and improve designs.
Personally I put large thrusters on the rear and bottom for planet entry, makes it much easier
looks like a pod racer
nice !
Yeah kinda does a bit
I think your set up here could be improved by:
1) painting a grid on your platform.
The grid is actually a pretty good idea to help maintain symmetry and measurements :)
I don't mind using the hydrogen since ice is so easy to come by, but that's a personal preference I think gantry's would be cool to use more for the challenge of constructing them well.
Shalower in someways but deeper than others I was expecting.
how do you get ice n hydrogen? i ran outta fuel on the moon i just deleted the tank and built a new one lol i didnt know how to get fuel.
Experience does count for a lot, but there are methods to bootstrapping yourself to something better in a bit less time though :)
5:55 I loled hard xd
Oh man, feels weird going back and watching that from so long ago :D
@@Splitsie I just startet SE and found your videos to be very helpful:) but I believe you that it feels weird😅
aaannnnnd ... whooops ! I layed on the floor at this point. :)
Whoops, the word that covers everything from a minor mistake to an epic screwup :D
@@Splitsie with a similar silly Action i grinded a full big Cargo Container.. And all was lost in space. This is the poinnt when you Grab a New beer from the fridge :)))
Could've just flipped the assembler vertical against the refinery and slapped the thruster right on the bottom of it?
I honestly can't remember properly how the internals of the Talisman came together (been quite a while since I built it), but I know when I did the redesign to fit a jump drive inside I had a few things that I could optimise :)
Was as much of a question as an observation :D Love all of your videos, almost watched every single one o.O
Can you do tutorial on armouring
What would you suggest for power if we have yet to get uranium?
Batteries and charging via a connection to an existing base with things like turbines :)
I couldnt place that last block at 4:36, great tutorial though (:
That's odd, it's attached to the large grid thruster so it should have been able to place unless there's something that was in the way?
@@Splitsieits the block that attaches to the refinery by the conveyor tube that corner piece it doesnt latch on just falls to the ground if you try a workaround
LCS.Thanks for vid :)
@@jackmason9550 it's fixed rs
i wonder, will it work with batteries? im far from platinum on my save, let alone uranium, if so how many fully charged batteries would cover for one reactor power? im still new to this game xD
Yeah, it would work perfectly with batteries 🙂
alright, ill try to fix in some batteries then, i took the functionality form from your ship but im editing the decor, lets just hope i don't ding something up xD
i...may have some problems with the ship i worked for 3 weeks building it T.T ion engines work just with power right? can they be used to fly in atmosphere too? i'm in survival on an earthlike planet, i will need to leave the planet with the ship with hydrogen thrusters, land on a moon and search for platinum. It'll be a 1 shot trip
Ion thrusters have massively reduced thrust output in atmosphere, so on earth/mars/alien/europa/titan they'll be less effective than in space/moon regions. It's why for landing on those planets you'll normally require hydrogen thrusters too
All of the different slopes you use for your armor look like modded blocks, are they?
Nope, they're all vanilla. In my tutorial videos I make sure I stick with vanilla for everything, if there's any mod or script I make sure I point them out clearly :)
Might be a bit late but I think you should put a bit of glass on the ceiling
I don't think I could get any 'skylights' in the roof where I'd be happy with the armor shape around them both on the interior and exterior :/
you could do video about space stations and other things
Stuff up in space is definitely on the list, are there are particular parts with space stations you think would be helpful?
Immediate reaction- covenant dropship?
How would you do a 9 by 9 by 1 hanger door that is airtight
It's quite complex and involves clever use of merge blocks to ensure the door becomes the same grid as the base
Had the same issue this is a life saver lol
I get some Benet foddy vibes from you
He's got a fairly neutral Aussie accent too so I'm not surprised :)
Thank you, works great now.
Hey just a suggestion, you should play from the depth it a fun game that I find confusing
I might have a look at that one, I'd never heard of it before. Conveniently it's on sale on steam right now :)
Damn, that 40° FOV
Thankfully something I stopped doing long ago :)
Maybe you should post these as one large video from now on. Just a thought.
Sadly not something I'm likely to be able to do, my upload speed is so crappy that our internet would be next to unusable for almost half a day if I uploaded something that long :(
The joys of the Australian government thinking that 25Mbps is all anyone will ever need! (I don't even get that much for download most of the time)
Splitsie Okay that's understandable
Splitsie meanwhile in America some ISPs charge a great deal for 25 down... 3 up...
I know Aussies don't have a monopoly on bad internet, but the speeds you're describing are better than what I currently get, and the best I can ever hope for if policy doesn't change :(
lets say i dont have access to uranium yet, how can i power this ship to get me to space so i can find uranium?
Hydrogen Generators and Solar Panels
Now this is podracing
Does anyone know the name of the song at 11:00
I don't seem to have my old project file for it, but it's a track by Kai Engel, I'm having trouble working out precisely which one though :(
Splitsie thanks for trying I’ll just look through all their songs
No worries, he's got some pretty nice stuff and most of it is creative commons too which is nice :)
I'm not being sarcastic here but thanks for not giving me the name because i now have most of his songs to use in content creation, instead of just one
I FOUND THE SONG IT IS Album: Better way Song: Crying earth
No gyroscopes?
Yep - even to this day a thing I have to make conscious effort to not forget :P
Y not a tutorial on torpedo guidance block..
I'm gradually working toward doing some videos on player made weapons and a guided torpedo will likely be part of that :)
No promises on how soon that will be though :P
Busy anti-pimpling my ships now!
I hear that Proactiv can be useful for that ;)
LMAO!
Is it possible to find uranium on earth?
Not since the survival update last year, now uranium is only found in asteroids - which I think was a good change to the game as it makes things more interesting with power production on planets :)

Quick question, is my ship (steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=870053450&searchtext=TEF+Delta+4+%28Survival+Ready) alright?
I think it's looking pretty good so far, do you have plans to incorporate armor around the large atmospheric thrusters that are giving lift?
Can you use this same way of designing for a larger ship
There's no reason why you can't, this approach to design should scale well :)
a single large engine just feels... wrong. it feels like it’s the law to include 2 large forward engines
I just recognized this ship from a future video it is the talisman
That it is - this is where it was born :)
@@Splitsie yes! I knew it (oh, and this also helped me with my utilitarian large ship design)
This looks a little like a spaceship i made in spore
lol so meditative
@@Splitsie Yeah... Probably bad luck. Thanks Splitsie.

"the anti pimple piece"
Yep, can't have those pimples :P
followed step by step and the front and back of my ship are two separate grids somehow :L
It's important to be careful to ensure you don't separate the two parts of a large grid when grinding unless it's all still considered a station, sadly if they're mobile grids the only way to reconnect the two parts will be with merge blocks which can be hard work depending on what other vehicles you have available to move the parts around
0/10 doesn't look like a giant dong.
could kill this with like 3 railguns on a small fighter, exposed hidrogen :(
