NICE! I always liked this stretch of highway through the park- it is a beautiful road to see in videos. Nice ride and a great tune to go with it! It's always cool to see freeways and or interstates that are unusual like this one through the park! Nice ride Jim!
Jim, your videos look so better in quality than any other freewayers out there. Keep up the good work!!! I hope i wiil start something like this in Greece.
Recently took my wife to NH for some great fall foliage. Franconia Notch Parkway was as awesome as I remembered it from my initial 1992 trip. Unfortunately, I couldn't show her the "Old Man of the Mountain" !!
Wow that brought back some awesome memories. That is an awesome video. On one of my summer visits my grandma and mom planned an outing to the Franconia Notch and went to the flumes and then had a picnic lunch at Echo Lake. That was the first and only time I got to see the Old Man on the Mountain before he fell off. Every once in awhile we also would take 93 through the Notch up to Littleton to Monroe NH to visit my grandma's friend as well as to check on some family graves in the area.
I stopped at the Lincoln NH gas station just south of the Betty and Barney Hill abduction state Historical Marker! The convenience store has all manner of copies of articles about the incident papering its walls!
My first Freewayjim video on my new monitor. Won't be my last. Greens really stand out compared my 10 year old monitor I was using until it conked out. No "bars" on top and bottom is a big improvement.
Daconthocon78: Look at the area, kind of a hard sell to put a freeway through a tourist area, people were worried it would disrupt the natural beauty in an irreparable way so the Super 2 was a compromise. Before that it was an old two lane highway (US-3) so trust me, what's there now is a great improvement.
Maybe a stupid question, but is it better to drive North or South or not matter? Im going up to Lake Winnipausakee for a week and I wanna do a day trip up to Mount Washington and trying to determine what route to take up and back.
That's interesting how it looks like in parts they took a 2-lane undivided highway and just put up a barrier in the centre to create a quasi-divided highway with only 1 lane each.
Trans Canada Phil. Barrier finally went up because of accidents and speeding. Parts of that road is supposed to be 45 mph. 8 miles of that roadway is a State Park called Franconia.
Yeah, a 45MPH Speed Limit on an INTERSTATE Highway and only One Lane in Each Direction. They’re definately meeting the Standards for an Interstate Highway
+benlonghighway Because it's narrow enough in some places to where even a Super-4 would destroy parts of the park. Traffic doesn't really warrant 4 lanes either, even in the summer...though getting more parking for peak weekends would be a plus. Often on busy weekends, hikers and visitors are parking on the grass along the shoulder near the park ramps.
Tourism. Not much business up north, they rely on natural beauty in northern nh. It's a different world and destruction of the natural would be a death sentence to the local economy. As far as building a highway goes, too much traffic in notches is dangerous as mountains erode. This means a highway can erode and fall if the soil becomes loose or rocks can fall on the highway. The relationship between the people the environment is quite important here.
Also, the Old Man still stood at that time; a lot of people thought vibrations from full-blown freeway construction would cause him to fall. (He fell anyway, but years after the parkway was built & almost certainly from natural forces.)
How can that get an Interstate designation when it clearly doesn't meet AASHTO standards? US-99 in CA has 500 miles of interstate standard freeway yet no Interstate designation.
Besides what Jim mentioned, this was an originally planned Interstate segment, unlike 99 in CA. The proper studies were done and it was determined (rightfully so) that a 4-lane would be too damaging to the area, and so a Super-2 was planned and built instead. BTW, it *DOES* meet AASHTO standards...it just doesn't meet FHWA Interstate standards for shoulders and lane count. AASHTO standards =/= Interstate standards.
I recall a short Super 2 section of I-25 in rural southern New Mexico in the late 1970's as well, IIRC north of Truth or Consequences. At least they got their freeway, unlike I-40 in Memphis which was messed up for decades after the Overton Park section was blocked before they finally rebuilt the interchanges at both ends of the detour.
Oh, and US 99 (now CA 99) missed interstate status because they decided to build I-5 on the other side of the Central Valley instead of thru Fresno. The Grapevine/Ridge Route section of I-5 from the CA 99 interchange south of Bakersfield thru the Tehachapi Mountains to LA was originally part of US 99; so was most of I-5 from Sacramento to Canada.

Very nice. Thanks for the ride Jim!
Thank you!
The scenery is really beautiful. Thanks for the ELP, I'd forgotten about the group until now.
You are welcome, thanks for watching!
Excellent looking video and a fun ride. Even with the clouds, the scenery was breathtaking. And ELP sounded great as always. Thanx for posting this.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!

Yes, it's a great ride, I think the old man collapsed in 2003.
It's always a great thing to see the beauty that the Granite State has to offer; glad you re-shot it and as always I enjoyed the ride.
Thanks Scott, yeah that ride is always a must film for me.

Very impressed with all of your "Ride Along" videos. Great quality, excellent editing and very cool choices in music. Keep up the GREAT work.
+jonwood19901 Thank you very much!
That stretch you drove corresponds with the part of US 3 where Betty and Barney Hill had their alleged UFO encounter in 1961.
I stopped at the Lincoln NH gas station just south of the Betty and Barney Hill abduction state Historical Marker! The convenience store has all manner of copies of articles about the incident papering its walls!

I agree. This is the first time watching this video from a new M1 iMac, and it looks amazing!
Beautiful area!

Nice video. Definitely a different and more calmer feel this time around.
Thanks, that's what I was shooting for.

Awesome video!
Thank you!
Wow,good video,I didn't know New Hampshire was that nice.

My personal opinion is that Northbound is a more scenic and interesting ride through the Notch, there's a sense of anticipation as you approach it.
great name freewayjim and great video
Thank you!
You should go up to Maine near Baxter State park, beautiful there!
Exellent video.
Thank you!
best honda driver :)
that would be nice to drive on that stretch and cruising in a 69 Chrysler Imperial

great ride. excellent video
you travel a lot like i do.
Thank you!
Freewayjim Like the music and the video. Have a blessed day Freewayjim.
Justin Hundley Thank you!

That was I nice video, I liked it.
Thank you!
Not sure why but it looks prettier the second time around. Nice job.
Thank you! A little more overcast on this one.
Freewayjim I like heavy clouds like that .
Daconthocon - not much up that part of NH. Probably more moose than cars.
3:53, I don't get why this highway goes down to one lane? That is rare to see unless if there is construction.
watch the vid again - Jim explains why.
It's the only one laned interstate, Jim explains more. You also have to keep roads narrow in a notch as there is little room to work with.
Are you going to be uploading any new Manchvegas?
I assume you mean Manchester? no, I did not film anything there.
Is there any chance of 93 becoming a full four lane highway in the future?
I would seriously doubt it.
Freewayjim No need to. And it would destroy a lot of Franconia Notch State Park in the process.
+Adam Froehlig But if they don't wanna destroy the environment, why not at least make it a Super 4?
+benlonghighway Because it's narrow enough in some places to where even a Super-4 would destroy parts of the park. It's 6 lanes in South NH and probably could use 8 between Salem and Manchester...
What are the environment al concerns of building this highway? If this highway did not exist, then there wouldn't be a road to go through here.
Darren78 Was no Hiway north of exit 28 until the 70s I think. Just a 2 lane road going north through a mountain notch...

Nice drive video is not too fast.
How can that get an Interstate designation when it clearly doesn't meet AASHTO standards? US-99 in CA has 500 miles of interstate standard freeway yet no Interstate designation.
There were some interstates that used to be "Super 2"s when they were first built, the West Virginia Turnpike and I-70 in Utah come to mind.
Besides what Jim mentioned, this was an originally planned Interstate segment, unlike 99 in CA. The proper studies were done and it was determined (rightfully so) that a 4-lane would be too damaging to the area, and so a Super-2 was planned and built instead.

The wacky driver... Quebecois, perhaps? On the interstates, they are terrible. And the lettering style looked a little like it.
