Still listening to this in 2023. Some of Joel’s best work, ever. This was a really exciting time for Progressive House music and today it feels as if Joel and co have completely let go of making such music. Each and every note & noise serves a purpose and it’s sad to think that Joel won’t make music like this ever again.
Dont blame the guy. It's all a product of signing to a major label, which he now has to play the game with their rules and he seems to regret it. At least, that is what i took from an interview he was in with Ryan Nether the less this track is timeless, bless up!

His music is still fantastic but he’s gone back to the techno of his early early years. Artists evolve and try new things over the years. This style lives on with his new collab with kascade.
To the people saying he "sold out," I guarantee deadmau5 would be a little more popular if he stuck to this style. It's rather basic plucky "melodic progressive house" and he'd easily be the biggest name in the genre. He's bored of it. It's literally just super saw chords with a filter. If you want similar stuff to this, search "melodic progressive house." That tends to be the one that's closest to the plucky chords of early deadmau5.
This was the best era of progressive house. One of deadmau5’s top tier songs up there with strobe and HR, this doesn’t have the crystal clear production value of his work today but hits me way more emotionally I have to say and that’s what music should be all about.
only deadmau5 can put a long ass intro that literally ONLY has a quarter-note bass kick with a white noise trailing it, and it sounds catchy AF. Idk how he does it man.... the man's creative hemisphere is workin it
The long ass intro you're referring to is called DJ tools. It's for DJs to be able to mix into the next song without having to overlap tracks with too much clutter and gives more time to bring in the song cleanly. But I agree, his are somehow catchy just by themselves. His production skills are off the charts, even back in these days.
