Please keep doing these demonstrations of your calligraphy. The use of traditional tools in controlled, but loose and flowing strokes is a huge help to locking in the idea of getting millage on the chosen instrument. I think people get hung up with the idea that each letter must be a perfect example of the style they are trying to learn. Getting the swing of the pen, and looseness [ less tension ] while learning enhances the rate of competence. I have your book, Brown Calligraphy. Denis Brown Discusses His Art. In it are examples of loose, and formal calligraphy which are prime examples of traditional letter forms used in loose, but beautifully artistic layouts. Thank you for gifting this knowledge to us.

Dealing with mistakes is art in itself, right? Enjoyed the dramatic cinematography. Amazing work!

Just watched your video again. Inspiration for the glass I am working on. Gold leaf, and paint, loose, loose, loose. Yet steamed in thoughts of tradition, and Medieval tools. I am a firm believer in allowing mistakes to remain, and being enhanced through learned technique. I have recently made large pieces of paper decorated with thinned down chalk paint and some with powdered mica to enhance the effect. Many different colors. My friend who has met you in Minnesota was over. We worked on these together All kinds of pens were used, also brushes, reed pens, Sumi ink alcohol ink [ home made ]. Total enjoyment. Thank you for your inspiring tutorials, and dedication to calligraphy.

Sadly, I have stopped posting to UA-cam due to lack of appreciation compared to other social media. People don't sign in and comment like you have done. I'm saving recent new films to present at the 2024 US conference at Davenport, Iowa. www.calligraphyconference.org/

@@DenisCalligraphy Denis, I will follow your direction in educating us anyway I can.
I am useless with technology, but can get help from family members.
My goal is to always have inky fingers. All the best to you.

Sadly I have stopped putting films on UA-cam as the more I made, the less logged watches and likes I got. From tens of thousands down to hundreds over the years. It seems my FB and IG followers do not login to UA-cam so cannot like or comment.

Well done Dennis! so important to keep focused on the art and creativity, as you suggested, so often pushed aside when acquiring the skill

“Fear has no place in calligraphy” One of many wise statements in this beautiful video. You’ve done it again, Denis: preparing a feast for our eyes and minds. Looking forward to your continued play!

Does anyone know (or can you tell us) what music was used in this video? It sounded so beautiful!

Thank you. It is an old Irish song called "She Moved Through the Fair”. Traditionally sung by a male voice, the key phrase at the end of the chorus is “it will not be long, love, ’til our wedding day.” But of course the melody is melancholic, very sad. It suggests that dream never happened. Something went wrong. When the Chieftains recorded it with Sinead O’Conner doing the vocal, it was masterful! She sang it as “HE moved through the fair”. Either way, the couple eluded each other and the idea that his death in a war is unavoidable. The version I used was recorded by Richard Heacock. I added sound effects and extra reverb, especially for that line “It will not be long, love, ’til our wedding day”. That day likely never happened due to the killing of this soldier at war. Very sad, indeed.

Thank you. The very wide pen shown is a brand called 'Automatic' pens. I used Brause Bandzugs for less large writing on this piece. Look them up.
