Why didn’t Sam just switch the lights on as soon as she entered the apartment? Instead she’s wandering around with just a torch beam. I hate it when characters do stupid stuff like that. Also, if somebody called me in the middle of the night to say there was somebody/something in their apartment, my FIRST question would be “have you called the police?”.
she did turn on the lamp as soon as she got there maybe there was no switch to turn on a light until she got to the lamp... I can't believe how you think its ok to criticize something so simply explained here! as if you have created a better film 🙄
I've heard the thing about the light switches a million times. I think maybe we did a take where she tried the switch and it didn't work, but we didn't use that take for whatever reason. I think if she tried the wall switch and it didn't work, people would just be complaining about why the overhead lights don't have power but the lamps do. If she tried them and they did work, the lighting would be really bright and flat and boring. When you're shooting this fast, you've got about five seconds to make these decisions or you fall behind. But we wanted low key atmospheric lighting, so I don't regret it. So she walks past two light switches. Maybe she didn't see them in the dark. Maybe she's really focused on what's in front of her and went for the lamps because she could see them. Or maybe she knows from being in Lindsay's apartment before that they don't work. Who cares? It's just what she did in the situation.
I totally agree with you 💯 enjoy the short film (or dont) then move on! This short is great.👍🏽👍🏽⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ it was a perfect decision to have her use the lamps I mean maybe she didn't even know where the dam light switches are but she could see a lamp...lol intelligent people understand these nuances... and personally when I'm freaked out in the dark it's scarier for me to reach out and turn on a lamp than be next to a wall scaling it for a switch. I mean what if something reaches out of the dark and grabs my wrist?! 😳😂 I really enjoyed this film. I'm an old lady and I have seen them all and it's been a long time since any made me jump but this one did! Anyone can be a monday morning barstool quarterback trying to say what would have played better but only truly gifted people can create a seriously spooky short with great acting😉 I'm sorry some people can't think outside the box, Please don't take it personally!
aside from the light switch everyone is commenting about, I think the whole film flowed naturally and it was legit scary. I also dig the monster design, it's so convincing.
Very enjoyable and chilling horror. Long ago, as a young woman living alone, shadows and weird noises would freak me out. I always had a pack of big dogs, which helped. It's scary, sometimes. Luckily, I never saw a creepy hungry creature. I did see the hairy leg of a man, inserted through the aperture of a pushed in window screen. Until one of my dogs bit it and shook it. Then I heard screaming. Ah, memories.
I don’t understand why the friend was so eager to check out her apartment. I would’ve just said I ain’t checking out ish and taken her back to my place without question. *EDIT* I’m quite amused that the comment I made as a kind of tongue in cheek remark on the actions of the friend in the short, birthed this whole thread. I fully grasp that characters have to act in a certain way to tell the story the creator intended. My comment was meant to reflect how I would’ve reacted had it been real life. I’m not a brave man hence I would’ve noped out of there right quick.
@@Notou-iz2uc He's got a point, though. It's noticeable how incessant she was about entering the appartment. It makes it harder to suspend disbelief when characters act abnormal. Her friend was freakin out and repeatedly told her she didn't want to go back, yet for some reason Sam insists that she's going to check it out. At the very least, she should've called the police first. As a writer, you have to come up with a good enough reason for the character to want to enter the creepy appartment, and I think this short kinda failed at that. The story needs Sam to go in, but the execution ends up feeling a bit forced.
I think the last thing Sam wants to do is bring Lindsay back to her apartment or call the police and make a whole night out of it. It doesn't seem like that kind of friendship dynamic at all. Just look at the way the characters interact. Sam clearly has her shit together but Lindsay doesn't. I think you could assume this isn't the first time Lindsay has called Sam about a freakout, so Sam knows from experience to be skeptical. That's why, after Lindsay tells her story, the first thing that Sam asks is, "What kind of sleeping pill?" She knows about Lindsay's problems and although she's sympathetic, she's getting kind of tired of dealing with them. The way Sam talks to Lindsay in the driveway of her apartment bears this out -- it's like she's talking to a child throwing a tantrum. Sam wants to get this over with and show Lindsay that there's nothing wrong so she can go home and go back to bed.
@Xaeed: it's interesting that you aren't even considering being brave in that situation. I think maybe your critique is more about you than it is about the film because I wouldn't have called the police I would have gone in to see if there was something in there but I'm OG like that 😉
Excellent. Just excellent. Writing, direction,acting... And thank you for not displaying a dozen fake or superficial film awards on the thumbnail. Suspense from start to finish, likeable characters making rational decisions. Would love to see this in a full blown film similar to Lights Out.
Ghostbusters! A priest. or if I'm not sure if I'm losing my mind and I just took a sleeping pill I would call a friend. that's who I would call. I would not call the police if some crazy looking creature like this showed up at my house.
