Hi Shaun great work i hope one day to be able to actually do something, but i have a question for you i have down loaded your templates and i used my 3d printer to make them but i am confused as to how they are used to grind the graver in one video you show a 1/2 inch block being used to grind a bit and in another you show the wheel even with the machine base so which way is the correct way to use the templates thanks for all your great videos.
Hi Dennis. There a few styles of graver you can make with the template for general engraving the best way is to do a first grind where the template and sharpening stone are on the same level. The raise up the height the template by 3.5mm approx,to make a heel. The video 'what a graver should look like' explains it.
Shaun Many thanks for your great videos and for giving your time and experience to all us who want to try engraving and a big thank you for taking the time to answer questions. Dennis
@@express375 I always fail in the "Hell" section and it makes me frustrated, my question is whether the prospective chisel rod must be measured for sure, for example 4 cm or something else. did you also measure it. I used 2 templates for one tool. are there any suggestions?
@@mbootgae1497 Hi. dont get to stressed over the heel, it's such a simple thing but no way to physically see one, we wonder if we got it right. The template was designed so the graver stuck ot 35mm for a 15 degree heel. You can make an inital grind by raising the grinding wheel above the surface. Check out my latest videos on graver templates, Jeff Tootel has made available some 3d printed files. You can also get something like steve lindsay templates, which is what I mostly use, but are more expensive. Just keep at it. we all go through frustation while leanring, break through and you will experience a little bit of magic :) cheers bro
@@express375 I made my own template, I found it as a pdf friend, if you have to buy from Lindsay it's very expensive I just want to start with a hammer. if with a hammer at least I must have what type of chisel and to what degree? I thought about buying a chisel from Aliexpress but I still doubt quality. I think this hobby is expensive. I saw grs chisel on Aliexpress is it true or fake? Thank you, I'm always waiting for your video. helps many beginners and keeps costs down
I'm not really sure,as I just look at them and say that's about right. A guess would be 2 inches 50mm? I make them a bit to long now,as I'm so lazy with sharpening, they will last longer, before they get to short. Hold whatever your using for a graver, and see how far your graver would stick out so your thumb and next three fingers could reach the end with a bit sticking out,is a good length to start with. When you start, you can choke up near the end of the graver,so two fingers and the graver acts like a tripod. better control, and less likely to slip.
Got the same problem here. Can't seem to find the 100mm line anywhere, and my printer scales it much too small. Thanks anyways, this is of great help. I'll try experimenting with the dimensions.
I had some trouble with my printer, but i found a workarround, scaling it manually on the screen to get the dimensions right. Maybe i'm doing it wrong, but the angles look right so i'll go on with this. Thanks for responding so fast :)
Hello Shaun. Your link on templates in Dropbox doesn't work (File does not exists). Please, correct your link. It will really help me and another people.
+BlackPowderGuy The disc arbor is a thing with two nuts, that you will need to be able to use the diamond disc in a drill press. If you search for it,I'm sure you'll get the idea.

Shaun, What length do you cut your engraving bits...im building the 65 dollar set-up & almost ready to start engraving. Thanks

What size stick do you use to start with on your gravers? 1/8" square stock? Or do you prefer round?
2mm round carbide
Shaun, are you using 8" discs or 6" discs?
I think 8 inch, I got some 50mm dia discs that would work for a handheld version.
Where did you bought your engraving vice?
Sutton tools in the UK
Cant find that "cheap vice made in India"you have mentioned in one of your videos
You could get even cheaper from aliexpress
Shaun, Would you kindly put a scale and/or a few dimensions on your template drawing so I know that I have the dimensions correct?

If you print it from the PDF as a pdf,it should be to scale
