I find it odd that the term "Military grade" is used as a selling point - having been in the military i can tell you most of our kit was complete crap bought from the lowest bidder 😂
With how bad things are from manufacturers, everything being out of spec and untested and unverified, having shit military grade certified atleast it means that the part passed a QC
Any (US) government contract is supposed to go to the lowest bidder. The government sets the standards, but they're also looking to keep the cost low. So the lowest planned cost + lowest offer awarded = ... yeah, not a good selling point
Maybe they are reffering to Raleigh! Because Raleigh bikes are made to last for a Century! Quality is exeptionally Superbe!!! like my Raleigh Superbe!!!

I met Shimano in Tokyo back in 2010 when he visited my house. Very business focussed man - and very confident that Shimano could hold off Chinese competition. A real family business.
The first pneumatic tire was produced in 1888. Before that, all rubber tires were solid. The first version of this Bianchi was produced in 1912. Choosing solid tires over pneumatic tires, which had only existed for 28 years in 1916, was common for military bicycles of WWI. The officers version did have pneumatic tires though. The German Herrenrad 'Victoria' Model 12 from 1905 actually used metal springs as a 'tire'. That was ahead of its time. A few things Ollie didn't mention about this bike that are more unique than its folding frame: It had full suspension! front, rear and a pivot at the bottom bracket. The 'reservoir' seen on the sides of the fork blades housed the front suspension springs. The front (rod, not cable actuated) brake was direct mounted (very uncommon for the time) and the rod was integrated into the frame of the bike, completely hidden, so it actuated the brake from underneath. It was indeed fixed gear, and '2 speed'. but you didn't have to remove the wheel and 'flip' it around, because it had two fixed sprockets threaded to the drive side. To change gears, all you had to do was loosen the axle nuts, push the wheel forward to slack the chain and then move it to the other sprocket.

There def is gonna be a rash of bike sells eventually more then the normal seasonal selling. But when who knows people use fitness equipment as coat hangers for a while before they sell it lol
Last I heard, the shortage was only really on bikes costing under about 1000 eurodollarpounds. Most people who want to get into cycling (during the lockdown or otherwise) aren't going to spend a grand-plus on a first bike: you only start spending that kind of money once you're sure you actually like it. Of course, the supply-chain issues and factory closures still apply to more expensive bikes but a shortage of those is less of a problem: if you're buying a mid-range or better bike, you're probably upgrading from an existing bike that you can just ride a bit longer.
The Slate is a lovely bike. It's just a shame it's not compatible with a front mudguard, a hub dynamo, and a front pannier mount. If Cannondale resolved these issues (they can, but do not care to) with the Lefty, I'd happily have bought one. I was considering a purchase two years ago, but decided on alternatives primarily because of these omissions. For Me as an avid cycle tourist and an unfortunate resident of Rainland (more specifically, Germany and The Netherlands), a bike intended for lovely California weather only (and incompatible with panniers and hub dynamo) is a compromise too many.
I think full suspension for urban bikes from Riese & Muller (maybe others before them but not sure) was ahead of its time and still people don’t really get it. But when I ride that bike compared to my rigid bikes on roads around here, it’s way more comfortable and feels much safer.
Maybe you should make another bikepacking video - “Bikepacking like it is 1916” (no guns)? I remember Simon having a lot of fun in the Atlas Mountains. 😉

And right out of the box, Sting-Rays gave kids confidence to do all sorts of crazy stuff, like riding long wheelies and dropping down steep streets before calmly applying the Bendix coaster brake at the bottom and venturing off-road and riding around and having fun. And the Sting-Ray inspired the BMX marketplace, which was big business by the middle of the Seventies.

Really interested to know what that saddle is ok the mantlepiece. Glad to give it a home if it's for sale- looks good.
