That's correct. And Calty is their design house in Southern California. When we go there to shoot, they have these very tall, moveable walls that they roll around to block of views from things they are working on (upcoming concepts, etc), and its really hard to not want to take a peek when you are on the way to the bathroom, but we never would and know we can't. But its tempting!
For people wondering why he ripped the paper apart in the end; This is not a detailed work. It is a rough sketch, something he is supposed to be able to create without effort at any time. It is supposed to be a sketch with just enough value to indicate its purpose, but no more. Had he put more effort into it, it would have become an art piece, but no longer a sketch with a purpose of hinting a design direction. In theory he should not lose anything by destroying this, because he knows he can effortlessly recreate it anytime he wants. The key is to put exactly the needed amount of effort and thought into the work - no more, no less.
+Dane Hamilton Also, if you intend on doing a rough sketch and get too much into it and spend time on it, then it does not serve its purpose. It is difficult in the beginning to let go, but you also need to learn how to spend your time. at least when you do it as a profession/study :)
Automotive design is a very cool profession to work your way toward. We've toured many of the design studios and they guys and gals working there are some of the happiest people in the automotive business. Who wouldn't be doing that all day, right?
We are glad you like it! This video was actually created and produced by Road & Track, a sister publication of Car and Driver. We have lots of other great videos online on the Car and Driver Channel under Road & Track presents, as well as on our own UA-cam Channel. Check them out!
+Ege Coskunsoy From your perspective you are correct, but you have to imagine how many cars he "explore" daily or weekly before "hit" one and enhance work with that model.
Ege Coskunsoy think of this as regular drawing for people in ID profession, nothing an extraordinary that it would hold him to keep sketch for possible future reference.
Mazda Furai has the great example of a futuristic yet gorgeous looking design language. Because they actually put effort to create a design philosophy on the car instead of drawing a bizzare car in few minutes and call it a day. Thats what most concept car designers doing nowadays.
He ripped it up because its "The 5 Minute Car" - these designs only last for 5 minutes. Can't wait for you to see how we destroyed the next one in episode 2!
Haha yes it is indeed. I have LOVED to design cars since I was like 4 years old, I remember I drew boxes with wheels; and now I can do a pretty good job drawing a car. I'd be so happy designing I dont think i'd call it a job. Thanks for replying!
I'd like to knw what he did to get to the position he has today...Did he go to school? Was he just super talented? Or was it just knowing the right ppl? I'm considering working in the automotive field...was thinking of being an auto body painter but designing the cars would be awesome too
I'm interested on drawing cars. since i'm not study in design faculty, i don't have any basics of that. i have problem with perspective view since drawing a car is not same as drawing buildings. any suggestion? thanks
Jasper Hunter telling a beginner to watch sangwon is probably one of the worst thing you can do. He exaggerates the proportion and a perspective to an extreme extent, and without a decent understanding of automotive proportion and form, this would only confuse the beginner. It is much better to use his work as reference to learn a good line quality/show the surfaces in a sketch, as he does an incredible job with contrast and the shading of 1-2-3 sides. A good way to start is to simply sketch from existing car models, allowing a person to understand the form and proportion of different types of vehicles, and then moving on to designing.
Scott Robertson is an excellent designer and has a lot of great technique to show you. Look up his youtube page, it's a great place to start. He also has a book called how to draw that he recently released that will show you how perspective works in fantastic depth. Other than that, do your own research. Take reference pictures and try to draw using just your eye.
Any Cool Grey Copic or Magic Markers will do it. The technique is simple blending. When you sketch with Ball point pen and use an alcohol based marker like he used it gives that purple smear effect. He also blended in the sky tone
I have a question for you or anyone who may know. So it seems to me that you are largely a car designer, mainly focusing on the aesthetics of the car, correct? Well if so I was wondering if you know anything about how the cars run or know more what goes on under the hood? See I do a lot of designing and love designing cars however, I have not a clue how a car works. What I do know is the aerodynamics that go with the cars design though. Can I be a car designer without knowing the mechanics?
victor robles Thank you! I worked along with the authorities in my country. They told me what the standards were that I had to meet and then let me do whatever I wanted so long as I worked within the law. Then once I was finished a through inspection was done by a certifier and VTNZ and then the car was made legal for on road use. A lot of paper work though!
Front Mid-ship engine placement. Examples include the Corvette, Viper, GT-R35, LF-A Ferrari 599, FF, F12, Aston Martin Coupes, Marcos Mantis, and Honda S2000. It is no less effective than Rear mid-engine, costs less, more stable at high speeds, less costly, more practical, and more popular in terms of actual number of cars sold.
eso hago con mis dibujos los rompo o los regalo no le doy importancia se que esa idea siempre estara en mi cabeza... admiro tu trabajo muy original tu diseño
+Dipankar Gupta I am not sure of the exact model, but they are some kind of marker pens. All marker pens have this effect, some with better quality than others, but that is the purpose of them - to be able to put layer upon layer without ruining the color.
He ripped it up to say, "I can do one of these anytime I want to, no big deal." I do think he's been drawing that car for years. It just came too naturally to have designed it just then. Still, amazing artist! I've been trying to do what he did in minutes for years and have never come close. Guess that's why he gets the big bucks and I get to watch.
both depends on the designer and the company some stay for 6 months and move on, others are freelancers so they only take a job and leave, yet others stay for 20+ years. the amount they make varies just as much depending on how long they work and their success (eg head/chief designers will obviously earn more)
I like seeing the drawing process, how someone else does it. I draw cars all the time while sitting in meetings. Why go for cab-rearward styling in a mid-engine car though? Lose the side scoop and make in front engine.
definitely a Letraset paper! from my experience, the paper doesn't make markers bleed thru the paper. :) hope this helps! auto design student use this mostly!
I it was to show that you do not need to stick with your first concept sketch and you should sketch over and over again and then you will get to a point where you really like your work
Why did he destroyed that design, just curious :) Anyways nice video, as i am also uploading my speed sketch video, which i did in software. I will be glad to get reviews. Wishes
CleoTv It's like what he talked about. This sketch will probably not be used. And if he spends 5 more minutes into that drawing , it looks even better.
damn im really passionate about designing cars and drawing, also art. i wish i could get into a company but only a high school student. if anyone knows how can i get into a car desinging company?
Why on Earth did he rip up his drawing after he was finished it? That's makes no since! That's was an awesome car drawing and he ripped it up for no reason! And by the way I'm hugely inspired by cars especially in design form!
THe weird thing about this and a few other quick sketch videos and he said it himself is, that he destroys his sketch.? We have been taught never to destroy your work and to almost stockpile them as material to learn from and as a source of possible ideas. The whole scrapping work thing now seems just wrong to me.
www.ctrlpaint.com/videos/mastering-the-art-of-letting-go Watch this. The video is about creating concept art for video games, but I feel the same idea he explains in it can also be applied when working as a car designer.
well... you could apply to automotive design... but if you have zero background knowledge about designs, i suggest that you should try Foundation courses that is sponsored or partnered with universities. for me; i just finished my Design foundation course in Foundationoncampus at coventry (partnered with Coventry university anyway.) and I am heading to automotive design this year :)
Art Center College of Design in Pasadena CA or CCS in Detroit is a good start. Once there you will be shown how to get an internship and then land a job. Prepare an entrance portfolio with 4 car design projects showing research, ideation, develpopment and final design. Good Luck
Staffordshire University also in UK has a Transport design course (which i am on). Which can teach you anything from bike design to trains to automotive and also helps you prepare for getting a job from the very first year. And we also have visiting lecturers from Bentley, which is nice :)
+Yo2an They are called Prismacolor Premier Markers. You can find them at a local art store like Michaels or Amazon of 12 for about $25. You have to expect these markers to be expensive because they are for art, but these are really good! I have the same markers as the ones he has in the video. :)
Nothing god given about it. Sketch 5000 cars and anyone would get pretty good at it. Design schools can always teach you how to draw, they just can't teach you how to think. Hard work and dedication (like any other profession) will give you the skills to put your idea on paper and make it look easy.
I converted my own car to electric power and asked if I could appear on the air about it. At first they said yes, but they've never contacted me back... Figures... Someone on the payroll of a car consumable manufacturer probably squashed it.
If I wanna learn about how to design cars but I'm from Mexico and there aren't design schools here, so How can I start designing cars just to have fun? I hope somebody can help me.
I don't know why, but there was so much emotion when he was tearing that page.
+Daniel Kemnitz I agree. When you're a transportation designer you have sketched so many things that the rough ones are really worth nothing at all.
+Dane Hamilton Also, if you intend on doing a rough sketch and get too much into it and spend time on it, then it does not serve its purpose. It is difficult in the beginning to let go, but you also need to learn how to spend your time. at least when you do it as a profession/study :)
Got the meaning. Thanks for your comment. I was getting so curious why he did that. :)
I kinda cried when he ripped it off...
Sinexation He has nothing to lose, 5 or 10 more minutes and the sketch will look 10 times better.
Automotive design is a very cool profession to work your way toward. We've toured many of the design studios and they guys and gals working there are some of the happiest people in the automotive business. Who wouldn't be doing that all day, right?
This are the kind of videos that are worth watching! Awesome designer, awesome car
Ian, you are so spot on and its a joy to watch your simple yet exacting technique unfold.
...and you're right about the car noises. Lavin
Thanks! We are glad you enjoyed it. Episode 2 in 2 weeks
This video was actually produced by Road & Track, a sister publication of CD. We are glad you like it!
That's how it all starts, with a love of cars. Happy to reply and thanks for checking out our video!

Wow! That was very cool! Ian Cartabiano was just as impressive at our 2012 Career Day. Thanks for sharing your passion and being an inspiration.
We agree! Ian is great. Did you see the Lexus LF-LC? He had a large hand in that concept.
The crazy thing is how easy he makes it look. That's when you know its just natural, god-given talent.
You really see his passion in his work and I love it. One day I hope I really love my job like this man.
Great video! My dream job is to be an automotive designer so this was a great watch!
Even if i had nothing to lose i wouldn't destroy such a piece of art .
Its on the way! Another episode in 2 weeks
The way the marker adds soft tones is amazing. Is there a technique or specefic marker?
The best stuff from C/D. Get the hottest new & legendary veteran designers to contribute to these series. BOOKMARKED.
Wow these videos are magnificent.
Great series. Hope to see more!
really enjoyed this and great piece at the end, what markers were used to shade ext? thanks
Great Episodes!
Mazda Furai has the great example of a futuristic yet gorgeous looking design language. Because they actually put effort to create a design philosophy on the car instead of drawing a bizzare car in few minutes and call it a day. Thats what most concept car designers doing nowadays.
someone knows what is the sofware that Ian was using in the first of this video?
MORE of this. SO awesome.
R&T, please continue this series!!!!!!!
this serie should return
He ripped it up because its "The 5 Minute Car" - these designs only last for 5 minutes. Can't wait for you to see how we destroyed the next one in episode 2!
Nooooo why must a beautiful drawing be torn why!!! lol! Thanks for showing us a genius who loves car at work, it was really cool to see!!!
Haha yes it is indeed. I have LOVED to design cars since I was like 4 years old, I remember I drew boxes with wheels; and now I can do a pretty good job drawing a car. I'd be so happy designing I dont think i'd call it a job. Thanks for replying!
It sure is, cars are my passion! Thanks again.
Sir i also like designing of cars i am having some modals to share plz share me your link i will post there
I'd like to knw what he did to get to the position he has today...Did he go to school? Was he just super talented? Or was it just knowing the right ppl? I'm considering working in the automotive field...was thinking of being an auto body painter but designing the cars would be awesome too
KuroInuNeko it’s really a mixture of all the things you mentioned
I'm interested on drawing cars. since i'm not study in design faculty, i don't have any basics of that. i have problem with perspective view since drawing a car is not same as drawing buildings. any suggestion? thanks
If you haven't watched any of Sangwon Seok's videos you should, he is on youtube, carefully watch how he does things and just keep practicing
Jasper Hunter telling a beginner to watch sangwon is probably one of the worst thing you can do. actually the perspective techniques used in drawing cars and building is exactly the same. It just tends to be the angles that are different.
Any Cool Grey Copic or Magic Markers will do it. The technique is simple blending. When you sketch with Ball point pen and use an alcohol based marker like he used it gives that purple smear effect. He also blended in the sky tone

Bravo! Well done Sir!
we need more of these videos
I created my own concept too. I built it even. Its called the JZ Cobra and it is in my videos.
I saw those videos, and I have to say that your car is amazing. How did you make it legal?
victor robles Thank you! I worked along with the authorities in my country. They told me what the standards were that I had to meet and then let me do whatever I wanted so long as I worked within the law. Then once I was finished a through inspection was done by a certifier and VTNZ and then the car was made legal for on road use. A lot of paper work though!
Wow I'm very impressed. I'm also into car designing car but I'm Only 15.
This is the right way to draw a car: *DrawCar . info*
its amazing
this guy makes all that (what I would consider a pretty good sketch) and just rips it... like damn
nice video
We agree!
The Design of the car was a raw as usual concept. Finally goes over trash bin.
this dude is awesome..
wht kind of pen r u using?
+Daniel Bokshan The pen he used is probably a Pentel R.S.V.P Fine point.
Front Mid-ship engine placement.

Dude u have a strong heart tearing ur artwork....
How. How how how. When I first saw him sketching it, I thought it would look awful, then it slowly turned amazing
What kind of paper did he use ?
can I know which software you use for designing car????
+Priyanka Jadhav yes i will tell you, its a pen and, a piece of paper and a lot of experience.
eso hago con mis dibujos los rompo o los regalo no le doy importancia se que esa idea siempre estara en mi cabeza... admiro tu trabajo muy original tu diseño
that music played in the does anyone know the name
What’s the color of that marker?
what markers were used?
Is there any way that I could contact him?
Imagine a 5 minute car drawing done over period of 2 hours!
What music is that playing in the bg.
The "Bob Ross" of auto design;)
What markers does he use?
sir, i want to know what is the exact name of this kind of mechanical pencils which draws like some water shade on the paper(car's body)
+Dipankar Gupta I am not sure of the exact model, but they are some kind of marker pens. All marker pens have this effect, some with better quality than others, but that is the purpose of them - to be able to put layer upon layer without ruining the color.
+Daniel Kemnitz Prismacolor/Tria/Letraset/Pantone markers - You want the warm and cool grey sets
+Dipankar Gupta It is a Prisma marker and a Prismacolor pencil.
thank you very much sir..
He ripped it up to say, "I can do one of these anytime I want to, no big deal." I do think he's been drawing that car for years. It just came too naturally to have designed it just then. Where in the usa can I study this career?
Wow. Good job
I like seeing the drawing process, how someone else does it. I draw cars all the time while sitting in meetings. Why go for cab-rearward styling in a mid-engine car though? Lose the side scoop and make in front engine.
if that car came into production, id be on the waiting list with a pre-order already done..
Mine too, I was like "WHAT! DON'T!!!!!!!!" Then I realized that for these guys that was just like another 5 minutes of work.
Prismacolor markers, i use them from architectural design. you can find them in art supply stores or check their website. best art markers ever made
Amazing!
what kind of paper did you use
definitely a Letraset paper!
from my experience, the paper doesn't make markers bleed thru the paper. :) hope this helps! auto design student use this mostly!
what about the mr2 spyder?
love this guys voice
I it was to show that you do not need to stick with your first concept sketch and you should sketch over and over again and then you will get to a point where you really like your work
anyone else see alot of ft-1 concept in that scetch O.o
what is the name of those markers?
Prismacolor markers. Btw, Copic markers are great for this too.
This is great.
Why did he destroyed that design, just curious :)
Anyways nice video, as i am also uploading my speed sketch video, which i did in software. I will be glad to get reviews.

amazing, i wanna learn how to draw like that.
why did he rip it up at the end?
Why is Everyone freaking out? It says he Will destroy it in the title!
Yeah we get it but whats the damn point ?
Ege Coskunsoy he will not have any use for it!
THe weird thing about this and a few other quick sketch videos and he said it himself is, that he destroys his sketch.?
We have been taught never to destroy your work and to almost stockpile them as material to learn from and as a source of possible ideas. The whole scrapping work thing now seems just wrong to me.

Oh Thank you so much! :)
What did you think about Graph'it Markers? ;)
+Yo2an Graph'it Markers? I have not heard of that brand before...
No Prismacolpr premier is colorpencil We use Copic marker for designed the car
Nothing god given about it. Sketch 5000 cars and anyone would get pretty good at it. Design schools can always teach you how to draw, they just can't teach you how to think. I am with the last guy who commented, I also want to be a designer, but I don't know how to become one
In reality prisma colour shading markers. Copic are a great brand as well.
I can't wait to get my degree...
See C&D, THIS is what we want to see. Not two fools sitting on a green screen showing old and outdated videos.
c'mon man doesn't it hurt to rip apart a piece of art
we actually have markers called Magic Markers. I personally use them.
As a improving car designer id like to know!
If I wanna learn about how to design cars but I'm from Mexico and there aren't design schools here, so How can I start designing cars just to have fun? I hope somebody can help me.
start with paper.. move on the computer
+alex80330 Start of small..... with a bag of oranges
does anyone know a famous conceptcar designer
He's tech is good, but his sketches are far away from a kind of timeless beauty.
