I just watched The Trial of the Chicago 7, and U.S. vs. John Lennon. I guess that's why UA-cam knew to throw this video at me. Amazing how much UA-cam knows about me. I wish I could see all of this interview. I had never heard anyone say Lennon was a socialist. That's interesting.
As talented as a songwriter, guitarist, singer, poet, artist John Lennon was, the one thing he was not was working class. He grew up in a upper middle class home and was always in school or playing music. If you want working class then look no further than his former partner Paul McCartney who grew up poor and lived in a household that had to all work together to make ends meet.
Funny thing, I live in 1000 Islands NY the place where Abbie became Barry Feldman and joined the save the St. Lawrence fight. The reason I loved Abby because his uplifting spirit helped many of us survive the Nixon and the Viet-Nam war era. It was a long and sometimes weary battle And Abbie was always there to pick us up He paid the price.

Abie Hoffman seems like a completely different person here from his radical days. Here is so easy-going, mellow, and even humble. Here he seems like a nice, approachable person.
John Lennon did his last interview on December 8,1980. It was John's last one, and it was for two and one half hours with Dave Sholin of RKO radio. John's last few words were " I always considered my work one piece, whether it be with beatles, David Bowie, Elton John, Yoko Ono and I considered that my work won't be finished until I'm dead and buried and I hope that's a long-long time. It wasn't too long after John Lennon was murdered.
you gotta remember that as abbie states in this video, he hadn't spoken to lennon since 1972. lennon had changed a lot in the 8 years from 1964 to 1972, just as he had changed a lot in the 8 years between 1972 and 1980.
Lo! He's not supposed to laugh inside city limits! In those days there were so many "educational" things about "how to know if your kid"s mind is being destroyed by drugs and he needs to be locked up". The most ominous symptom was "inappropriate laughter". The arrogance of those intellectually/emotionally/spiritually stunted fools thinking they could judge what it was appropriate for US to find amusing was indicative of so much . . . . .
It's kind of sad watching Abbie Hoffman. He was a vibrant 60s radical hippie. Here in 1980 he looks like a middle aged, balding, suburban professional husband/father. What became of most of these hippies once the war ended? Did they stick to their same beliefs or did they grow up and become what they condemned?
Abbie was never truly 'mainstream', but he did go underground for a time. Hard to give a 'cover-all' answer for what the hippies did after Vietnam. I dont think they all turned into conservative republican 'yuppies', tho.
@@wylier Yeah, but most didn't remain dirty flower children for life. They probably got married, had children, got high paying jobs, and moved to affluent areas.
@pinkledpink I have been there in the 60s - most certainly not park ave -chap- All of Liverpool was obviously lower working class. I am from USA so my thoughts are from that perspective
Yes, but that was just an actor. The real Abbie did a bit part in a movie called "Born on the 4th of July" - he took his own life shortly afterwards. The film was dedicated to him.
Just imagine if the United States Custom Service had succeeded in getting John Lennon out of this country. John Lennon would most likely be with us today. I remember when the Beatles broke up,people would always talk about a come- back. John Lennon talked about it some years later, about a come-back.
I like to think that too. If Lennon had been deported, he'd still be alive today. However, a reality check contradicts that happy thought. The scumbag who killed him was going to kill him anyway. He actually had a list of celebrities. Lennon just happened to be his main target. He flew from Hawaii to NY city just to kill him. He would have flown to England. You might think that gun laws being more restrictive in England would have made a difference.Could be, but poor George Harrison was almost stabbed to death in England, even with all the security measures post-1980, so my guess is Lennon's days were numbered. That asshole who hopefully will rot in jail was going to get him in NY or England. Sadly.

Abbie Hoffman is an interesting guy. He’s someone I disagree with on almost everything, but I would’ve wanted to get to know him. My parents’ friends tease me as the Anti-Hoffman because we look so similar. He’s fascinating.
The Black Panthers had a saying it was. the White Leftist can cut there hair and Join the establishment . well unfortunatley many did. a few still kept there old values of Leftist politics because i know quite a few but yes many others simply sold out.
I disagree with Abbie saying Lennon was a socialist.. or that Lennon even said this himself. His views were far too complex to wrap up into any -ism. I like to remember Lennon as a libertarian. Freedom from war. Freedom from hatred and agression. Freedom to love and live how you wish. I can't see him being all for this global socialism that is now being foisted upon us.
You're obviously ignorant of Lennon's documented, more in depth political musings and statements. Just because such a narrative regarding Lennon's personal doctrine doesn't conform to your worldview, doesn't mean it's not accurate.
Lennon's parents did leave him to his Aunt that is true but he grew up in an upper middle class home. His Aunti Mimi and Uncle George were better off than most...they were able to bring in a maid once a week...a luxury the McCartney's could not even have dreamed of. Lennon may have been troubled inside but he was never wanting for anything and lived very comfortably.
I like how the interviewer lionises the Hell's Angels. They stand for hedonism and criminality, not any laudable moral traits. As for Rand, she was against materialism and believed socialistic governments would limit potential and inevitably lead to corruption and bankrupt countries. Though I guess she might believe the same about all governments, as her utopia was a sort of anarchistic meritocratic commune. In Atlas Shrugged at least she promulgated adultery, a trait she exemplified.
Well...can't say that I disagree with that but the point was about wanting for material needs. The point being that he was not brought up in a lower class home...it was upper middle class. He did not want for the material things in life.
like going to states like Vermont? and living off your parents trust funds! and talking with a condescending to local folk of how ignorant they are? believe me i have a home in rural west Virginia and we got hippies who are just that!
Abbie should have been with John Lennon when he was shot- Standing in FRONT of him. Hopefully, Chapman would have had the good sense and ammo to do both of the hippies! I'm sure he spared us DECADES of Lennon's mindless caterwauling and political posturing. NONE of the Beatles, except for Paul (the talented ONE) should have EVER performed again after the band broke up! Harrison, Starr, and yes, Lennon, all SUCKED solo!

I greatly admired Abbie in the sixties. He was a voice for revolution along with others. I agree with him, it was all so misunderstood.
Is anyone here from October 18th, 2020 watching this after watching the Trial of the Chicago 7 on Netflix?
