Don't know if anyone has told you already, but when taking the layers off the possessor ghosts, you don't need to charge the vacuum all the way. Just the first little charge is all right. It does the same thing.
To answer your question at the beginning of the stage, Cobi, the barrel is filled with power-enhancing crystals for ghosts. There ain't anything there.
I did the same thing as you did and I had no problem with it. You don't have a time limit to take out the ice, but it does take time, because the boss do move quite fast.

To get more G's, try to beat on the boss on the the old clockworks and capture every ghost with full power on your poltergust 5000, if mission complete, success with a tons of G's, keep repeating until your upgrade is full... oh, and the final upgrade is the SUPER POLTERGUST OVER 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think time is not the ONLY thing that considers what medal you get. you also lost 20 health. Perhaps to get gold you have to beat that boss without taking any damage AND beat him within a certain amount of time. I've seen other games such as DMC: Devil May Cry where this is the case?

coby, considering how hard this boss is that is not too bad to do it in the time you did it in, although the boss of the second mansion it has a hard mechanic leading up to the boss and yet it is easy to get gold rank which i dont understand.

just play the first mansion and check every room. And make sure you charge your poltergeist fully when you capture ghost in order to get gold bars

C-B has a lot of money just charge as much as you can when canching ghost 3 bars at level 3
