    This ride was a work of art. So sad that it was left to rot underwater for years before being destroyed and discarded like trash. Such disgraceful mistreatment of such a beautiful ride. Tragic...

    4 years old in '81 when first rode this ride...I thought it was all real. Scared the crap out of me at the end. At least I was able to ride it again years later as a teenager. Very sad it's gone now.

  • @ibrake4butterflies
    @ibrake4butterflies 8 років тому +46

    It's a shame really. Now with fast pass and fast pass+ ( not sure what the difference between the two are) a guest could get a time to ride and then not have a three hour wait time. It's Florida so I can't believe that this ride was impossible to operate. It never freezes over and the water is very temperate. They have glass bottom boat tours in Silver Springs. 20,000 Leagues was just a fancy version of a glass bottom boat ride as it was always on the surface and people walked down a few steps and sat down. It was Disney Magic at its best.

    Was one of the best rides ever. A Walt Disney creation destroyed by the New Corporate Disney. That's why you now have to "Remember The Magic". River Country suffered the same fate.

    • @456swagger
      @456swagger 9 років тому +4

      +NCGraceCharms No, until the Day it closed it was a very popular attraction. As a matter of fact the resort television channel urged guests to arrive at River Country early because that attraction "filled up fast" Disney even lied when they closed River Country. The signs they placed at the Attraction plainly stated that it was closed "for refurbishment".

    • @Zarggg
      @Zarggg 8 років тому

      +456swagger It didn't close because of "New Corporate Disney," it closed because the equipment was built in the 70s and was starting to fall apart 20 years later. They had to drain the entire attraction several times a year to clean it and even then, it was very expensive and difficult to maintain.

    • @456swagger
      @456swagger 8 років тому +5

      +Zarggg Wrong Zargg.It wasn't falling apart. That was the lie told to the WD execs to try to close down the ride. They even poured a 5 gallon bucket of water into the sub that was being inspected to make the ride appear to be leaky and unsafe.. What about the similar attraction in Disney Land? Mum, I guess your opinion just doesn't hold water. Oh well "Remember the magic"!

The awe-inspiring Jules Verne attraction really captures the imagination. Wish I went on this as a kid before it closed. Disneyland, the Anaheim park, had 20,000 Leagues in the early 1960s, which was the only time we ever got down to LA for a visit. At this point in my life, I don't recall much about it specifically except for the "bubbles," Atlantis, and the cross-eyed sea serpent. Most of the original park was still in place.

    They closed it down years ago to the rides leaking in the lake. They had to keep paying debts to keep it operational. They closed in the middle of the 90's and paved over it to expand Fantasy Land. For more information on the fate of this ride, please visit the Disney Wikipedia, and make sure to include ride in the search.

    • @JohnJones-qt7em
      @JohnJones-qt7em 9 років тому +2

      +Silver Arrow Leaking? Debts? Huh? The ride closed because of park attendance. It has grown exponentially since this ride was built. It no longer had the capacity to keep up with the crowds, so it got the ax. Simple mathematics. Disney completely owns the parks and surrounding land. By owns, I means OWNS. It is incorporated by charter through the FL State Legislature as the Reedy Creek Redevelopment District. They basically make their own rules, and any "debts" would be paid to themselves. The State Legislature has no intention of harassing its golden mouse. The State would go bankrupt without them LOL

    • @downlink5877

      +Silver Arrow This comment literally makes no sense

    • @mondenkindqueen
      @mondenkindqueen 8 років тому

      +Downlink I think he means that Disney wouldn't be paying someone else to keep it operational. Which isn't true, because somebody has to be paid to make the repairs and buy parts, even if Disney used their own people. Don't know where the part about land ownership came though.

    • @JohnJones-qt7em
      @JohnJones-qt7em 8 років тому +1

      There is a water and waste treatment plant on-site. Any leak would leak right back into their own system. That's the point. The employees are already there and on staff. Engineering handles day to day ride maintenance. What operational cost?

    • @mondenkindqueen
      @mondenkindqueen 8 років тому +1

      John Jones Still the ride would eventually start showing its age and would need more and more repairs. How much time, energy and money should Disney put into repairing a really old (though popular) ride? Any large amount of water needs to be filtered and cleaned $$$. That means lots of old pipes and filters that would occasionally need to be repaired and sometimes replaced $$$. Plus lighting for the scenes $$$ Plus the electricity needed to move the animatronics (even if they're pneumatics) $$$ And all of that only gets worse with age. So they gutted this ride and replaced with something that didn't need water and was cheaper all around.

I rode this ride once in the 80s and to this day I swear I remember clear as day there was a submerged Woody Woodpecker with Xs on his eyes, hands tied behind his back and block of cement on his feet. I knew it was a joke on their cartoon competitors. I've search and searched and never found anything on this. I figured they pulled it quick being as morbid as it was but was definitely a trip seeing. I know I'm not cracking up. Somebody else had to have seen this. Please respond if so. Did the ride just claim Turtles are the Dinosaurs Decendants?
    Nice little Ride, but I feel its a bit outdated. I see hobby Artists making much more detailed Work.
    And maybe I sleept on some Parts, but no Gigantic Squid grande Finale? Feels like a missed oppurtunity.
    Sounds a bit like im ripping it a new one, but Ride is fine, honestly.

    There wasn't a worthwhile movie or toys they could sell from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, just a stupid book! They don't want kids reading! So why the FUCK would they keep this ride? You gotta think like a Disney CEO!!!!
