wow, incredible footage. i can't believe this is the same city. how vibrant. the palm trees, the ocean, the beautiful architecture, the smiles on people's faces. the city had it all...and has lost so much. but, hopefully, it will be rebuilt, because it deserves to be a beautiful, vibrant city once again.
I born and grew up here in Mogadishu, yes we were one of the most peaceful countries in the world let alone Africa and on every side of life we were doing good, but the man who did all of these hard works paved the country into a prolonged civil war an endless mess and finally died in shame in Nigeria as a fugitive refugee and that was Siad Barre

In the 1960s we just got our independence and we have democratic system in place with leaders coming to power through elections then at the end of the first peaceful decade dictator siyad barre seizes power and dismantles everything. Then nepotism is introduced with almost all top positions going to members of his own clan ignoring almost all other clans. Siyad enjoys military aid from the Soviets with full immunity from persecution, takes the country to war then he feels so big that he wants to bite the only hand that's feeding him which is the Soviet in this case. Now things get messy for our people with our defeat by the Ethiopians with the help of our old allies the Soviets. People show their political dissatisfaction with the dictator then the dictator feels paranoid and he introduces torture or kill policy in which he embarks on a journey to wipe out a whole clan in the north. In the early 1980s begins the genocide against the Isaqs in the north and the torture which leads to a explosive build up of grievances towards not only the dictator but also against his own clan leading to the massacre of Marehans and later on darods in Mogadishu by the native hawiyas. By this time in 1990s our country is not only at war but also our society is divided along clan lines massacring each other with no ending sight to the conflict. Different factions with their own militias with so-called Somali generals as their leaders now roam streets of Mogadishu and all major cities country leading to inner conflicts among clans. Situation gets worst with each subclan fighting against the other leading to a clannish society of today with no trust among themselves and a corrupt infamous political system 4.5 is born. Our history is interesting though mostly sad is one we had created together that wouldn't change as long as we are in denial of our past.
